Introduction
Simple, intelligent, proven
With conventional electrical installations,
you have to determine in advance how and
where your buildings switching systems
will be installed, before construction even
commences. But with KNX from Schneider
Electric, you can keep your options open.
Thats because everything in the system can
be changed or extended at any time without
the usual mess and without laying new cables.

Cost efficiency
Not only the one-off construction costs, but also the subsequent
running costs are decisive in ensuring the cost efficiency of an
investment of this kind. The following applies: the greater the flexibility
with which building technology can react to new demands and be
adapted to technical innovations, the greater its value for money. And
when a growing environmental consciousness and increasing energy
costs are taken into account, it is becoming even clearer that building
management must also incorporate intelligent solutions for energy
efficiency as well.
Comfort
Everyone nowadays expects more comfort and convenience in their
working lives. A modern electrical installation that can be operated
conveniently, simply and comfortably makes living and working just that
much easier.
System principle
KNX System
The concept of KNX System has started during the 1990s, and now
fully meets the International Standard ISO/IEC14543-3. In 2007, it
has also been approved to China HBES International GB/Z 209652007. This system uses KNX bus to connect all components, each
working separately, and can also monitor and control in a centralized
way through the central workstation. The programmed components
can independently perform functions like activation and deactivation,
control, and monitoring. They can also be combined in different ways
in order to flexibly change functions without increasing the number of
components.
Functional principle
KNX consists of a twisted-pair bus line and bus-compatible installation
devices such as sensors, actuators and system components, that are
connected to it.
Sensors record information that is transmitted to the bus in the form of
a data telegram. Sensors are e.g. KNX push-buttons and binary inputs
for connecting floating contacts.
Actuators receive data telegrams and convert these into switching or
dimming signals.
System devices and components are required for the basic system
functionality. They consist essentially of power supply units for
generating bus voltage, couplers for connecting bus segments and
interfaces for connecting programming devices.
Both power for the bus device electronics and information are
transmitted via the twin-core bus line. The bus line leads to every bus
device. As a rule, sensors require only the bus line. Actuators usually also
need the 230/400 Vmains supply for controlling loads. Bus line and
mains supply are separated strictly from each other.
Sensors
Sensors and actuators are selected depending
on the required application and consist of a
bus coupler and an application module with
the corresponding application program.
The application programs are part of the
Schneider Electric product database. They
are loaded into the devices together with the
projecting and operational software ETSvia a
PC serial or USB or Ethernet interface.

System Devices
Components to build the communicating
network, e.g. power supply
System components perform the operation of
the whole system, such as the power supply
module.
Sensors
Sensors are used to detect the operation
of switches in buildings, signal changes like
light, temperature, and humidity. Sensors use
smart PIR sensing panels, light perception and
temperature panels, etc.
- Receive an external command
- Transform it to KNX-information
- Send the information as telegram
E.g. push-buttons, movement detectors
Actuators
Drivers are used to receive the signal
transmitted by sensors and carry out the
operations such as: turning on/off a device,
adjusting the brightness of lights, opening/
closing the curtains, the air-conditioning, etc
- Receive telegram from the bus
- Process the information
- Execute the function

The KNX devices are connected in parallel using the red/black core pair of the bus line with the
help of bus connecting terminals. Up to four bus cable pairs (red and black) can be connected
to each bus connecting terminal. The bus connecting terminal (art. no. MTN680204) can also
be used as a junction terminal in the switch terminal boxes. Make sure that the polarity is correct
when installing.

*The DINVDE0829 standard determines the testing voltage for an additional test between cores and outer casing
surface in accordance with DIN VDE0472 part 508 as 4kV. This value is expected to change to 2.5kV as a result of
European harmonisation efforts.
If the second, non-assigned core pair of the bus cable is used, observe the following:
Only low-voltage SELVallowed
Max. continuous current 2.5A (short circuit and overload protection required)
Voice transmission is allowed, but not for public telephone lines

Description
Push-buttons plus
With this installation principle, the push-button is already equipped with a bus coupler. The retaining
ring is fastened on the installation box with screws. The physical address is programmed
after the bus connection terminal with push-button and LED is plugged on to the back of the
push-button. Push-button and frame are then clipped onto the retaining ring. Depending on
design, different push-buttons are available:
System M/M-Smart/M-Arc/M-Star/M-Plan
- Push-button 1-gang plus (two operating surfaces)
- Push-button 2-gang plus (four operating surfaces)
- Push-button 4-gang plus (eight operating surfaces)
- Push-button 4-gang plus with IR receiver (eight operating surfaces and IR receiver)
- Push-button 2-gang with room temperature control unit (new)
- Push-button 4-gang with room temperature control unit (new)
Artec/Antique/Trancent
- Push-button 1-gang plus (three operating surfaces)
- Push-button 2-gang plus (five operating surfaces)
- Push-button 3-gang plus (seven operating surfaces)
- Push-button 4-gang plus (nine operating surfaces)
- Push-button 4-gang plus with IR receiver (nine operating surfaces and IR receiver)
- Push-button 2-gang with room temperature control unit (new)

Instructions of Wire Routing
1. KNX bus is a 24V signal wire. It can be
piped separately or be laid in parallel with
strong tubes.
2. All KNX panels and actuator components
should be connected with standard KNX
cable, which is provided by manufacturers.
3. T
here are various forms of KNX connection
structures, including star-shaped, ringshaped, bus type, network type, etc. They
can also be used simultaneously and the
only thing to do is to connect KNX Bus
to all the panels. Specific connection
methods should be considered and chosen
according to many factors, the convenience
of construction and limitations of specific
structures.
4. If two or more KNX signal wires are needed,
they should be connected through the
bus connector or additionally purchased
connector on the KNX smart panel. Each
connector consists of two connectors, a
red + and a dark grey -. Each component
contains 4 connectors applicable to solid
conductors (Diameter: 0.6-0.8mm).
5. In field construction, a KNX cable should
be reserved in the base plate of panels and
sensors. When the equipment is installed,
cut the cable and connect it to the
connector of the KNX equipment.
7. A
ll curtain control lines must be piped or
bridged, and connected to a specific KNX
distribution box; and every line must be
marked with circuit No. or with its type,
district strictly according to construction
drawings; in addition, up/down or on/off
signal lines, common wire and earth wire of
curtains should also be marked out.
8. A
ll fan coil control lines must be piped or
bridged, and connected to a specific KNX
distribution box; and every line must be
marked with circuit No. or with its type,
district strictly according to construction
drawings; in addition, speed1, speed2 and
speed3 wind speed control signal wires,
common wires, earth wires, and control
signal wires of cold/hot butterfly valves
should also be marked clearly.
9. O
ther electric equipments connected to
the KNX system and all outer sensors (such
as infrared alarm detector or glimmer
sensor, etc.) should all be marked with its
line type and district. The above marking
requirements for control lines are mainly
aimed at facilitating the programming of
KNX system and later system maintenance
and electric circuit repairing.

Distribution Requirements of KNX Distribution Box
1. KNX distribution box and electrical
distribution box can be used simultaneously
or another KNX electric box can be laid
according to the owners needs and
construction requirements. The size of KNX
distribution box is decided according to the
equipment capacity of KNX actuators and
the number of open air circuit breakers.
2. In the KNX distribution box, the incoming
line hole of KNX signal lines should be
strictly separated from control signal lines
of electric equipments. The most ideal
situation is that KNX cable and the power
control line are mounted on the left and
right or at the upside and downside.
3. M
ost of KNX actuator equipments are
mounted with the DIN guiding rail mounting
method, with its height and thickness
equaling that of common open air circuit
breakers. Because the output end of the
KNX actuator needs to be connected to
a large number of control lines of electric
equipments. The distance between every
two guiding rails should be less than
160mm.
4. T
he specific size of all KNX actuators can
be decided according to type selection list.
