Introduction
Simple, intelligent, proven
With conventional electrical installations,
you have to determine in advance how and
where your buildings switching systems
will be installed, before construction even
commences. But with KNX from Schneider
Electric, you can keep your options open.
Thats because everything in the system can
be changed or extended at any time without
the usual mess and without laying new cables.

The conventional solution

In addition, all building technology devices and

installations are connected via a single bus
line. The bus line is laid in parallel to the 230V
power supply. W
hen you activate a sensor (for
example, a push-button), an actuator (e.g.
the roller shutter control) will carry out all the
switching commands required.

functions for maximum flexibility

Benefits of the system

Flexibility
Considering that most buildings are designed for use over several
decades, its inevitable that, sooner or later, the uses to which its rooms
are put will change. The obvious solution: building functions which can
be adapted to the needs of the user easily and cost-effectively, without
tearing open walls and laying new cables.

Cost efficiency
Not only the one-off construction costs, but also the subsequent
running costs are decisive in ensuring the cost efficiency of an
investment of this kind. The following applies: the greater the flexibility
with which building technology can react to new demands and be
adapted to technical innovations, the greater its value for money. And
when a growing environmental consciousness and increasing energy
costs are taken into account, it is becoming even clearer that building
management must also incorporate intelligent solutions for energy
efficiency as well.

Comfort
Everyone nowadays expects more comfort and convenience in their
working lives. A modern electrical installation that can be operated
conveniently, simply and comfortably makes living and working just that
much easier.

Safety and security

If a building is to be as safe as possible, building technology must be
able to react quickly and intelligently in critical situations, whether
someone is on the premises or not. Given the extent and range of
these different requirements, conventional electrical installations soon
reach the limits of their capabilities. They can only do so much. As
a result, adapting the use to which parts of the building are put can
quickly prove costly, and coordinating the functioning of the different
buildings is a major undertaking.

System principle
KNX System
The concept of KNX System has started during the 1990s, and now
fully meets the International Standard ISO/IEC14543-3. In 2007, it
has also been approved to China HBES International GB/Z 209652007. This system uses KNX bus to connect all components, each
working separately, and can also monitor and control in a centralized
way through the central workstation. The programmed components
can independently perform functions like activation and deactivation,
control, and monitoring. They can also be combined in different ways
in order to flexibly change functions without increasing the number of
components.

Functional principle
KNX consists of a twisted-pair bus line and bus-compatible installation
devices such as sensors, actuators and system components, that are
connected to it.
Sensors record information that is transmitted to the bus in the form of
a data telegram. Sensors are e.g. KNX push-buttons and binary inputs
for connecting floating contacts.
Actuators receive data telegrams and convert these into switching or
dimming signals.
System devices and components are required for the basic system
functionality. They consist essentially of power supply units for
generating bus voltage, couplers for connecting bus segments and
interfaces for connecting programming devices.
Both power for the bus device electronics and information are
transmitted via the twin-core bus line. The bus line leads to every bus
device. As a rule, sensors require only the bus line. Actuators usually also
need the 230/400 Vmains supply for controlling loads. Bus line and
mains supply are separated strictly from each other.

3 Sympholux Lighting Control - KNX System Design Guide

Sensors
Sensors and actuators are selected depending
on the required application and consist of a
bus coupler and an application module with
the corresponding application program.
The application programs are part of the
Schneider Electric product database. They
are loaded into the devices together with the
projecting and operational software ETSvia a
PC serial or USB or Ethernet interface.

without a central unit, using the serial bus. All

devices are equal bus devices (multi-master
operation). To avoid telegram collision and the
destruction of data, the CSMA/CA procedure
is used.
KNX is operated using low-voltage SELV. The
bus voltage is DC24 V (+6/-4 V). When the
voltage is below 20V the devices power off
from the bus. The data transmission speed
is 9.6 kbit/s, so terminating resistors are not
required.

KNX is a decentralised bus system. Every

KNX device has its own microcontroller. The
devices can exchange information directly, i.e.

System properties

Type of units

The bus components are divided into three categories:

System Devices
Components to build the communicating
network, e.g. power supply
System components perform the operation of
the whole system, such as the power supply
module.

Sensors
Sensors are used to detect the operation
of switches in buildings, signal changes like
light, temperature, and humidity. Sensors use
smart PIR sensing panels, light perception and
temperature panels, etc.
- Receive an external command
- Transform it to KNX-information
- Send the information as telegram
E.g. push-buttons, movement detectors

Actuators
Drivers are used to receive the signal
transmitted by sensors and carry out the
operations such as: turning on/off a device,
adjusting the brightness of lights, opening/
closing the curtains, the air-conditioning, etc
- Receive telegram from the bus
- Process the information
- Execute the function

Addressing

KNX addressing distinguishes between physical addresses and group

addresses. The physical address is the name of the bus device and is
written in the form Area . Line . Device (e.g. 5.4.23).
The group address determines the assignment of the bus devices to
each other. Apart from servicing and programming procedures, a device
is always addressed using its group address(es).
The group address is divided into up to 16 main groups each with 8
middle groups and 256 subgroups. It is written in the form Main group /
Middle group /Subgroup (e.g. 1/1/127).

7. The light sensing on/off controller can

automatically control solar-protection.
If the sunshine is too strong, it will
lower the sun-shades automatically. It
prevents the indoor temperature from
increasing too high, and thus the system
will realize energy conservation.
8. The light sensing on/off controller can
automatically deal with floodlighting
and landscape lighting. When natural
light decreases, the controller will
automatically turn on the floodlighting.
When natural light becomes brighter, it
will automatically turn off the lights. The
system is easily managed and allows
conserving energy.

Building automation connection

Connection Method of KNX system and BA System
There are three kinds of connection methods
between KNX system and BA system:
1. Connection through input/output modules
and an interface signal.
2. Connection through a RS232 interface.
3. Connection through an OPC Server.
The following are the specific methods:
Connection through input/output modules
and an interface signals:
The interface signals can be 230V AC, 24V
AC/DC active contact signal or interference
spot signal. This method is the easiest one with
the lowest cost, but its functions are simple
and allow controlling only few modules.
Module Model No.:

15 Sympholux Lighting Control - KNX System Design Guide

Connection through a RS232 interface:

KNX system can be connected to the BA
system through RS232 standard interface
with the KNX Standard Interface Protocol. The
application software can be self-explored by
the integrators of BA system. This method
can fully connect Schneider KNX system with
BA system, but requires integrators of BA
system to have adequate software exploration
capability. RS232 interface model No.:
MTN681119, wall mounting, equipped with
MTN690099 bus LC, or MTN681929, din rail
mounting.
Connection through an OPC Server:
1. T
he OPC Server adopting the TCP/IP
Protocol can communicate with BA system
in OPC mode. This method can realize
a realtime and full connection between
KNX system and BA system. BA system
integrators can adopt standard method
to explore central-control application
software. Exploration is relatively simple and
exploration span is short.
2. Software OPC Server: Computers equipped
with OPC Server are connected with KNX
system through RS232 interface. BA system
can access Server in OPC method. This
method has a relatively low cost.
3. KNX adapters provide data in forms of
RS232, USB and Ethernet interfaces.

Installation detail
Instructions of Wire Routing
1. KNX bus is a 24V signal wire. It can be
piped separately or be laid in parallel with
strong tubes.
2. All KNX panels and actuator components
should be connected with standard KNX
cable, which is provided by manufacturers.
3. T
here are various forms of KNX connection
structures, including star-shaped, ringshaped, bus type, network type, etc. They
can also be used simultaneously and the
only thing to do is to connect KNX Bus
to all the panels. Specific connection
methods should be considered and chosen
according to many factors, the convenience
of construction and limitations of specific
structures.
4. If two or more KNX signal wires are needed,
they should be connected through the
bus connector or additionally purchased
connector on the KNX smart panel. Each
connector consists of two connectors, a
red + and a dark grey -. Each component
contains 4 connectors applicable to solid
conductors (Diameter: 0.6-0.8mm).
5. In field construction, a KNX cable should
be reserved in the base plate of panels and
sensors. When the equipment is installed,
cut the cable and connect it to the
connector of the KNX equipment.

7. A
ll curtain control lines must be piped or
bridged, and connected to a specific KNX
distribution box; and every line must be
marked with circuit No. or with its type,
district strictly according to construction
drawings; in addition, up/down or on/off
signal lines, common wire and earth wire of
curtains should also be marked out.
8. A
ll fan coil control lines must be piped or
bridged, and connected to a specific KNX
distribution box; and every line must be
marked with circuit No. or with its type,
district strictly according to construction
drawings; in addition, speed1, speed2 and
speed3 wind speed control signal wires,
common wires, earth wires, and control
signal wires of cold/hot butterfly valves
should also be marked clearly.
9. O
 ther electric equipments connected to
the KNX system and all outer sensors (such
as infrared alarm detector or glimmer
sensor, etc.) should all be marked with its
line type and district. The above marking
requirements for control lines are mainly
aimed at facilitating the programming of
KNX system and later system maintenance
and electric circuit repairing.

6. All KNX controlled power control lines of

lighting and electric equipments must be
connected to a specific KNX distribution
box. And every line must be marked with
circuit No. or with its type, district, live wire,
neutral wire and earth wire of circuit lighting
directly strictly according to construction
drawings.

Installation detail
Distribution Requirements of KNX Distribution Box
1. KNX distribution box and electrical
distribution box can be used simultaneously
or another KNX electric box can be laid
according to the owners needs and
construction requirements. The size of KNX
distribution box is decided according to the
equipment capacity of KNX actuators and
the number of open air circuit breakers.
2. In the KNX distribution box, the incoming
line hole of KNX signal lines should be
strictly separated from control signal lines
of electric equipments. The most ideal
situation is that KNX cable and the power
control line are mounted on the left and
right or at the upside and downside.

3. M
ost of KNX actuator equipments are
mounted with the DIN guiding rail mounting
method, with its height and thickness
equaling that of common open air circuit
breakers. Because the output end of the
KNX actuator needs to be connected to
a large number of control lines of electric
equipments. The distance between every
two guiding rails should be less than
160mm.
4. T
he specific size of all KNX actuators can
be decided according to type selection list.

Mounting Requirements of KNX Equipment

1. Common KNX smart panels are mounted
according to the European Standard 80
plate box (normal 86 plate box is also
applicable), and no more equipment is
needed. Due to the convenience and
appearance, the assorted 80 plate box is
suggested to be mounted.
2. If 2 or more smart control panels need
to be mounted in parallel, and over two
TRANCENT glass plates need to be
mounted, specific assorted 80 plate box is
suggested to be used. In this way, smart on/
off base plate can be perfectly incorporated
with the panel and the frame in order to
reach a better effect.

17 Sympholux Lighting Control - KNX System Design Guide

3. If designers dont have any special

requirement, the mounting height of KNX
panels should all be 1,300mm higher than
the floor (the height between the lower
edge of the frame and the floor).
4. P
ay attention to the mounting of the
ceiling-mounted sensor and the light
sensing sensor. The two sensors should not
be mounted under the lighting to prevent
wrong operations of sensors at nights due
to direct illumination.
