DYNAMICS-Problem Set - 1 Answer Key

The document contains 7 mechanics problems involving concepts like velocity, acceleration, projectile motion, and kinematics. Problem 1 asks how far a car will travel when decelerating at a constant rate. Problem 2 involves calculating the distance traveled by a train accelerating and then decelerating. Problem 3 asks for the acceleration of a car starting from rest with a given velocity equation. Problem 4 asks for the maximum height reached by a bullet fired at an angle.

DYNAMICS

PROBLEM SET NO.1

1.0 From a speed of 75kph a car decelerates at rate of 500m/min 2 along a straight
path. How far in meters, will it travel in 45secs?
S = Vot + 1/2at2
Vo = 75km/hr = 20.833m/sec
a= -500m/min2 = -.0.1389m/sec2
Ans. S=796.87m
2.0 A train upon passing point A at a speed of 72kph accelerates at 0.75m/sec 2 for
one minute along a straight path then decelerates at 1.0m/sec 2. How far in
kilometers from point A will it be 2minutes after passing point A?
S1=Vat1 + 1/2a1t12
S1 = 20m/sec(60sec) + (.75)(60)2
S1 = 2550m
Vb = Va + a1t1
Vb = 20m/sec + (.75)(60) = 65m/sec
From B to C
S2 = Vbt2 + 1/2a2t22
S2 = 65(60) + (-1)(60)2 = 2100m
S = S1 + S2
Ans. 4.65m
3.0 The velocity of an automobile starting from rest is given by: ds/dt= 90t / (t+10)
ft/sec. Determine its acceleration after an interval of 10seconds (in ft/sec 2).
V = dS/dt = 90t/(t+10)
a = dV/dt = (t+10)(90) 90t(1) / (t+10)2
a = 900/(t+10)2
when t=10seconds
a = 900 / (10+10)2
Ans. 2.25ft/sec2
4.0 A bullet is fired at an initial velocity of 350m/sec and an angle of 50 o with the
horizontal. Neglecting air resistance, what maximum height could the bullet
rises?
When the bullet is at its highest point Vy=0
Vy2 = Voy2 2gy
0 = (350sin50o)2 2(9.81) H
Ans. H =3664m

5.0 Determine the speed at which the basketball at A must be thrown at an angle of
30o so that it makes at the basket at B.

Ans

6.0 The ball is kicked from point A with the initial velocity Va=10m/sec. Determine
the range R, and the speed when the ball strikes the ground.

7.0 A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of Va = 150m/sec off the roof of the
building. Determine the range R where it strikes the ground at B.
