August 31 2003

The document summarizes a meeting at the Hope Center on August 31, 2003 from 5:00pm to 11:00pm. The goals of the meeting were to upgrade 3 Windows 9X machines to Windows XP and apply security patches. There were typical upgrade issues like incompatible printer and antivirus software, which were resolved by downloading new drivers and software. A connectivity issue with the router prevented Windows updates and it was decided a new router would be purchased.

Hope Center Monday August 31, 2003 Thomas Watkins

Harry Harshaw
Meeting Place: Hope Center Wood stock Georgia
Meeting time: 5:00pm to 11:00pm
Hours of meeting: 6

Goal:
1. Finish upgrading Windows 9X machines to Windows XP
2. Apply Microsoft Security patches to newly installed XP workstations.

Notes:

Today was an easy day that did not have to many problems it was just time
consuming the upgrade process from the current workstations to Windows XP was done
on three of the machines. This proved to be resource consuming and that resource being
time.

Issues that I encountered where typical and expected. Since the machines where
running the operating systems as listed below:

Hope 5 = Windows 2000

Hope 3 = Windows ME
Hope 4 = Windows 98

The printer drivers where not compatible with windows XP this problem was
easily solved with going to the printer vendors web site and down loading the XP driver
and loading it.
The Anti- virus software associated with each PC was Norton/Systematic 2001.
this is not compatible with Windows XP either so each machine needed
Norton/Systematic 2003 Enterprise edition which the hope center is licensed for and
currently has on hand.

Setbacks:
The Linksys Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4-Port
Switch/VPN endpoint was causing connectivity issues, which made updating the PCs
through the Microsoft Windows update page impossible. This is not fixable at this time
but I have decided to go out and purchase a new router.
