Induction Motor Response To Voltage Dips: By: Arpit Singh Bachelor of Engineering Electrical-3 Year

1) The document discusses the response of induction motors to voltage dips caused by faults in distribution systems. Voltage dips can cause induction motors to slow down or trip depending on the magnitude and duration of the dip. 2) Simulation studies were conducted using EMTP software to model the response of a 6kV, 3.4MW induction motor driving a compressor load under various voltage dip conditions. 3) The studies showed that the motor could withstand most commonly encountered voltage dips without tripping, though protection settings are often too sensitive, resulting in unnecessary trips. Proper motor parameter values are important for accurate simulations.

INDUCTION MOTOR

RESPONSE TO VOLTAGE
DIPS
BY :
ARPIT SINGH
BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING
ELECTRICAL-3RD YEAR
INTRODUCTION

Voltage dips and there impact on customer loads

constitutes the most prevalent power quality problem
in distribution system.

System Modifications can be implemented to

minimize the magnitude and duration of voltage dips.

Among the different types of equipments, which are

susceptible to voltage dips, induction motors are the
easiest to deal with.
Effect of Voltage dips on Induction Motor

Voltage dips are mostly due to system short circuit.

Their magnitude depends on short circuit level and
duration depend up on the clearing time of fault.
Depending on the size and duration of voltage dip,
the motor speed may recover to its normal value as
the voltage amplitude recovers.
Recovering process is dynamically similar to motor
starting process and is accompanied by large inrush
current.

System used for EMTP Simulation

• Simulation studies were conducted using DCG/EPRI

version of EMTP.

•Motor protection system susceptible to tripping due to

voltage dips are phase overcurrent, minimum voltage and
locked rotor protection.

CONCLUSIONS

A study was conducted using the DCG/EPRI EMTP to investigate

the response of induction motors to voltage dips.
Simulation of a 6 kV, 3.4MW induction motor driving a
compressor load was conducted.
 Motor response to the applied voltage dips show that this
motor can support most commonly encountered voltage dips.
However, protection settings are normally too sensitive resulting
in the unnecessary loss of motor operation that can be otherwise
avoided.
It has been demonstrated that the dynamic behaviour of
induction motors is sensitive to the values of the motor parameters.
It is, therefore paramount to use the proper values of
parameters for the simulated motor.
