PREFACE The purpose of this manual is to establish uniformity in design and application of all traffic signs and control divices in Malaysia for the benefit of road users, road and traffic authorities, and manufac- turers of traffic signs. This manual supersedes and forms part of the revised version of JKR/J(Rb) 0001/80, Manual on Traffic Control Devices-Traffic Signs. The Manual is now divided into the following parts:~ Ve 3. Arahan Teknik(Jalan) 24/85 - Standard Traffic Signs. Standard traffic signs drawings for Regulatory, Warning and Guide signs are illustrated complete with dimensions. A colored chart for all the traffic signs indicated acceptable colors for each sign. Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 28/85 - ‘Traffic Sign Applications. It consists of, with the exception of Temporary signs, design criteria and location requirements for all traffic signs. Avahan Teknik (Jalan) 2¢/85 - Temporary Signs and Work Zones Control. It consists of standard temporary sign drawings and their application in the work zones. Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 2D/85 - Road Markings and Delineation. Standard road line paints, road markings and delineators are identified together with guides on their applications. The specifications in this manual are recommended to be used for all new signs and for all replacements of existing signs which have outlived their usefulness.Function Of Traffic Signs Traffic signs are used to regulate, warn, or guide road users. Signs should be-used only where necessary and justified by facts and studies. Traffic signs are essential where special regulations apply at specific places or at specific times only, or where hazards are not self-evident. They also give information as to highway routes, directions, destinations and points of interest. Traffic signs ordinarilu are not needed to confirm rules of the road. Functionally, traffic signs are classified as follows: (a) Regualtory signs give notice of traffic laws and regulations (Refer to Section 2A of Arahan Teknik 23/85). (b) Warning signs call attention to conditions on, or adjacent to, a highway that are potentially hazardous to traffic operations. (Refer to Section 2B of Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 28/85). {c) Guide signs show route designations, destinations, directions, distances, services, points of interest, and other geographical, recreational, or cultural information, (Refer to Section 2¢ of Arahan Teknik 23/85). Scope of This Manual This manual prescribes standards for the signing within tne right-of-way of all classes of public highways. Detailed standards for Regulatory signs, which are divided into Prohibitive and Mandatory signs, are given in Part 1 and Warning Signs in Part 2, ‘The requirements and standards for Guide signs will depend on the functions they.are to perform. For this purpose Guide signs are divided into the following types:-(a) Destination signs * () Distance signs * (ce) Information signs * (a) Route markers * * All examples and standards are illustrated in Part 3. The specification set forth in this manuel applies to the range of traffic signs provided for in Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 2B/85 (Traffic sign Applications), and Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 2C/85 (Temporary Signs and Work Zone Control) All the standard drawings in this manual are identified by a two-letter and numeral reference, e.g. RP1 - Regulatory Prohibitive sign number 1 - refers to the standard BERHENTI sign, and except for Guide signs that include place names, all the standard traffic signs in this country shall conform to the relevant drawings illustrated here in. Other standard requirements such as symbol templates and lettering series for the traffic signs are given in Appendix 1 through Appendix 4. Color Code for Traffic Signs The following color code has been established and identified by JKR as being appropriate for use in conveying traffic control information,Note: ‘The colors coded below are used for road furnitures, other than traffic sign faces, such as road markings, traffic signal and traffic sign posts, guardrails, curbs and so on, and should be of gloss finish paint or of higher quality material.
