The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) expresses if strong

support and appreciation to Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister of Britain, for his
recent statements calling for a united voice condemning the Burmese military
regime ahead of the 2010 elections.

As Mr. Clegg notes, there is no room for democracy in the upcoming

elections. The State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), has created an
electoral process in which the results are a foregone conclusion. All the while, the
SPDC is using the upcoming polls as a means to increase persecution of ethnic
nationalities and democratic activists. The elections are an attempt to manipulate
the international community into believing that the goal of democracy in Burma is
one step closer, and some governments seem to believe the SPDC’s deception.

As the elections quickly approach, the international community must band

together to call the SPDC on its attempt at deception and demand real democratic
reform in Burma. Only with strong, coordinated international pressure will the
SPDC see that its plan to perpetuate military rule under the guise of democratic
reform will not work.

The NCUB thanks Deputy Prime Minister Clegg for his leadership and calls
on all governments to denounce the SPDC’s sham elections and demand real
democratic reform in Burma.
