Lab Report (2) : Title: Application of Different Types Softners Tasks

This lab report summarizes an experiment applying cationic and nonionic softeners to fabric using pad application. The report outlines the tasks, materials, procedures, and results. Testing evaluated softness, tear strength, absorbency, drape ability, and yellowness. Cationic softener produced greater softness and tear strength but less drape ability and more yellowness than nonionic softener. Both treatments improved tear strength and drape ability while reducing absorbency compared to untreated fabric.

Title: APPLICATION OF DIFFERENT TYPES SOFTNERS

Tasks

 To learn application of cationic softeners through pad method.

 To learn application of nonionic softeners through pad method.
 To compare properties between two types of softeners such as:
 Softness
 Tear strength
 Absorbency
 Drape ability
 Yellowness

Route

Pad è Dry

Apparatus

 Weighing balance
 Beakers
 Stirrers
 Graduated cylinder
 Padder
 Dryer

Recipe

 Softener = 35 g/L

Procedure

1. Liquor of 35 g/L was made.

2. Fabric were padded and squeezed with padding rollers to give final pickup of 75% .
3. Fabric then dried in oven.

Testings

1. Softness and drape ability were measured subjectively.

2. Absorbency were measured by drop method.
3. Tear strength was measured by Elmendrof’s Tear method.
Results

Absorbency test

 Untreated fabric = 2 sec

 Cationic pad = 11 sec
 Nonionic pad = 3 sec

Tear strength

 Untreated fabric weft tear strength = 480 g

 Nonionic pad weft tear strength = 1720 g
 Cationic pad weft tear strength = 2720 g

 Untreated fabric warp tear strength = 730 g

 Nonionic pad warp tear strength = 2440 g
 Cationic pad warp tear strength = 2620 g

CONCLUSION A B

Untreated fabric Cationic softness Nonionic softness

Drape ability

Nonionic finished fabric has good drape ability than cationic finished and untreated
fabric.

Drape ability in decreasing order.

Nonionic finished > Cationic finished > Untreated fabric

Yellowness

Nonionic finished fabric is less yellower Nonionic finished fabric has good drape ability
than cationic finished fabric. than cationic finished fabric.

Yellowness in increasing order.

Untreated fabric > Nonionic finished > Cationic finished

Conclusion

1. Cationic softener has more softness, less hydrophilic, less drape ability, more yellowness
and cause less tear strength loss than nonionic softeners.
2. After treatment of softening agent fabric get yellower, improve tear strength, improve
drape ability and reduce absorbency.
