Shubha Sao (Switched Ethernet)

Switched Ethernet connects individual hosts or network segments using switches instead of repeaters. This gives each device full bandwidth to the rest of the network. Switches learn destination locations by storing the source address port in a table, allowing frames to be sent only to the destination port instead of broadcasting to all ports. Full duplex switched Ethernet allows data transmission in both directions simultaneously, doubling transmission capacity without CSMA/CD. The main advantages are increased bandwidth through parallel frame transmission and reduced collisions. A limitation is that port mirroring sniffers have limited use on switches due to automatic traffic filtering.

SWITCHED ETHERNET

Presented by :
Shubha Sao
Ethernet
Ethernet is a family of frame-based computer
networking  technologies for local area
networks (LAN).
It defines a number of wiring and signaling
standards for the Physical Layer of
the standard networking model
Also defines common addressing format and a
variety of Medium Access Control procedures
at the lower part of the Data Link Layer.
What is Swtiched Ethernet?
An Ethernet LAN that uses switches to connect
individual hosts or segments.
In the case of individual hosts, the switch
replaces the repeater and effectively gives the
device full 10 Mbps bandwidth (or 100 Mbps
for Fast Ethernet) to the rest of the network.
Switched Ethernets are an effective and
convenient way to extend the bandwidth of
existing Ethernets
Features
Use an N-port switch
so that the bandwidth
is shared only
between the host and
the switch port
A layer 2 switch is an
n-port bridge with
faster handling of
packets
In 1989, the networking
company Kalpana introduced their
EtherSwitch, the first Ethernet switch
The switch learns destination locations by
remembering the ports of the associated source
address in a table.
The switch may not have to broadcast to all
output ports. It may be able to send the frame
only to the destination port.
More than one frame transfer can go through
the switch concurrently.
Full Duplex Switched Ethernet
Ethernet link which can
carry data in both
directions
simultaneously
Doubles the transmission
capacity(10 to 20 Mbps)
No need for CSMA/CD
To provide flow and
error control new MAC
control is added b/w
LLC and MAC sublayer
advantage
The switched Ethernet backplane is able to
repeat more than one frame in parallel (a
separate backplane bus line for each node).

Each parallel transmission can take place at

10Mbps.
limitations
 Include "port mirroring" capability, a sniffer is
of limited use on a switch because the switch
automatically filters out the traffic the sniffer
would like to get.
