Crude Pre-Heat Train Simulation Using HXNet

This document provides a synopsis for a project to simulate the crude pre-heat train of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited's (BPCL) Mahul Refinery using Aspen HXNet. The project aims to optimize and improve the performance of the heat exchangers to save fuel and costs. Over the course of 4 months, the student will learn about crude refining processes, study the refinery's heat exchangers, simulate the pre-heat train on HXNet, and analyze the results to determine efficiency, duty, and fouling factors. The goal is to simulate and analyze the pre-heat train of crude processed at BPCL's refinery.

1. Introduction:

1.1 Topic

The simulation of crude pre-heat train using Aspen HXNet.

1.2 Organization

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (Mahul Refinery)

2. Need for the project:

BPCL is an oil refining company that processes about 18000tons/day of crude. Since this
crude has to be heated before sending it into the furnace, it is passed through a series of heat
exchangers. This project is aimed at simulating heat exchanger network using HXNet to optimize
and improve the performace of these exchangers in order to save fuel and money.

3. Objective:
To simulate and analyze the pre-heat train of crude.

4. Methodology:

The project is carried out in into following parts

 Complete understanding of the theory involved in the preheat train.
 Simulating the pre heat train on HXNet.
 Analyzing the results to determine the efficiency, duty and fouling factor in various
exchangers in the grid.

5. Project Schedule:

 January 2011
o Reading operating manuals on the refining of crude upto the Vacuum Distillation
Column.
o Studying the various Heat exchangers involved in the preheat train.
o Visiting the plant.
o
 February 2011
o Learning HXNet to solve simple heat exchanger grids.

 March 2011
o Simulating the preheat train on HXNet.
 April 2011
o Analyzing the preheat train to determine efficiency, duty and fouling factors of various
heat exchangers for a variety of different crudes.
o Documentation.
