How is VMware Data Recovery Used in the Enterprise?

VMware Data Recovery is a robust, simple-to-deploy backup and recovery solution that businesses should consider using when they virtualize their infrastructure to provide the first line of data protection for their virtual environment. VMware Data Recovery enables: Full image backup of virtual machines. Full and incremental recovery of virtual machines plus recovery of individual files and directories.

VMware Data Recovery is your first line of defense against data loss and downtime in your virtual environment. The solution is fully integrated with VMware vCenter Server to enable centralized and efficient management of backup jobs and also includes data de-duplication to save on disk storage for your backups.

How Does VMware Data Recovery Work

VMware Data Recovery is composed of three main components: 1) The user interface plug-in for VMware vCenter Server, 2) The VMware Data Recovery virtual appliance that manages the backup and recovery process, and 3) The de-duplicated destination storage. Backup process: The intuitive VMware vCenter Server interface allows quick selection of virtual machines to be protected, backup job scheduling, data retention policies and selection of destination disks. The job is then dispatched to the VMware Data Recovery virtual appliance to initiate snapshots of the protected virtual machines and start the backup process. VMware Data Recovery is able to ensure that its entire state is captured at the point in time the snapshot is created. VMware Data Recovery is also able to free up the LAN from backup traffic by mounting the snapshot directly to the VMware Data Recovery virtual appliance. Once the snapshot is mounted, VMware Data Recovery begins streaming the blocks of data to the destination storage. During this process, VMware Data Recovery will de-duplicate the stream of data blocks to ensure that redundant data is eliminated prior to the backup data being written to the destination disk. When all data is written, VMware Data Recovery dismounts the snapshot and takes the virtual disk out of snapshot mode.

VMware Data Recovery

Recovery process: During the recovery process of an entire virtual machine, VMware Data Recovery will present point-in-time restore points for each virtual machine. Once the desired restore point is selected, VMware Data Recovery will initiate the process of restoring the virtual machine to the destination host or resource pool by retrieving the specific data blocks. When overwriting an existing virtual machine or virtual disk, VMware Data Recovery will efficiently transfer only data blocks that have changed. VMware Data Recovery also supports file level restore. This recovery process is similar but is instead initiated from inside the virtual machine console.

Monitors virtual machines that are migrated with VMware VMotion, so scheduled backups are not disrupted. Cost-effective storage management: Data de-duplication.
