due to the presence of fading, multipath, reverberation and refractive properties of sound. Various applications of underwater acoustic communications include, target range and velocity measurement, ocean surveillance, etc. In all of these applications, the signal has to be transmitted over the channel. The receiver observes the transmitted signal corrupted by the channel due to its complex properties. In order to have better receiver performance, the effect of the channel on the received signal has to be compensated. For this reason, the receiver has to possess the knowledge of the channel. In this research we propose an approach for underwater channel estimation based on the least squares method. Channel estimation using training sequences acquires the information about the channel. In minimum least squares sense, the channel is estimated as a multi-tap filter. The best fit in the leastsquares sense is used to determine the number of filter taps. An underwater channel with 200m depth, 6km separation between the transmitter and receiver, 5 multipath and constant speed profile is considered here. The algorithm has been verified by comparing the estimated signal with the desired output. With these estimated filter coefficients, the receiver can acquire the knowledge of the frequency response of the channel.
