PROJECT ON HOW BALL PEN WORK
A ball pen is a pen that uses a small rotating ball made of brass, steel, or tungsten carbide to
disperse ink as you write. The goal of a ball point pen is to create a device that can distribute a
fast-drying thick ink, without having the ink dry out in the pen itself. The key is the ball. THE
BALL IS ALSO CALLED NIB. The ball acts as:
• A continuous cap that keeps the ink from drying
• A mechanism for getting the ink onto the paper
Compared to the fountain pen, the ball pen is less cheap. As is the case with virtually all
brilliant inventions, it is the simplest solutions that work best. At the core of the ballpoint
design is a small ball that rotates, like a ball-bearing, within a close-fitting socket. There is just
enough of a gap within the socket to allow the nib ball to rotate within the socket but still
maintain a seal for the ink contained in the cartridge. Friction, caused by the moving the nib
over the paper, and gravity causes the ink to flow onto the ball where it is then transferred and
dries almost instantly.
