Making inferences is central to reading comprehension. When readers make inferences they interpret ideas and draw appropriate conclusions.

Inference is just a big word that means a conclusion or judgment When you infer, you go beyond the surface details to see other meanings that the details suggest or imply.

Inferring means to take what you know and make a guess.

Read the following situations and pick which answer you could infer.

1. If you see someone holding an umbrella, what can you infer


Answer: It might be rain

2. If you see someone with a cast on their leg, you can infer that:

Answer:

They broke their leg

3. If you forget to return your library book, you can infer that:
Answer: You will have to pay a fine

4. If you go to a birthday party, you can infer that:

Answer: There will be a cake

5. If you get fired from your job, you can infer that:
Answer: You did something wrong
