The poem describes a mysterious creature that hides in shadows and watches at night. She remembers past battles and searches at night for her son with a wilderness in her heart but fear in her soul.

Nightmare
She seeks the darkest shadows in which she disappears
she whimpers when the wind moans so you don't know she's near. You'll never know she's watching you and waiting for her call she's listening far into the night -aware, tense, sensing all.
A sheen of oil like ebony skin slides over muscles taught
she throws her head up high and proud, remembering those she fought. Somewhere a distant murmur -she falters, waits, -it's gone her eyes now dark and hungry are hurt, deep and alone.
She stands on the horizon, her hair thrown in the roar
of screaming winds & moonlit skies & severed souls of yore. The wilderness is in her heart yet fear is in her soul another night she looks for him, her life, her son, her foal.
