1) A solar power system was designed and fabricated for an experimental unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to increase its flight endurance. 2) Solar cells were installed on the wing's upper surface and an electrical circuit was developed to measure the output power of the aircraft's batteries during flight. 3) Flight tests showed that cruise phase flight without battery power is achievable using the solar power system.

SOLAR POWER SYSTEM FOR EXPERIMENTAL UNMANNED AERIAL

VEHICLE (UAV); DESIGN AND FABRICATION

fn
A Solar Power System Ior experimental unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is designed and
summarized. For the aircraIt represented in this paper, solar cells were used to increase the
endurance oI the aircraIt. Obtaining this goal, an electrical circuit was developed to measure the
output power oI the batteries oI the aircraIt during the Ilight. Flight tests showed that in cruise
phase Ilight without battery is achievable. A microcontroller based controller was developed to
collect the output power data oI power source to be send to the ground station. Since solar cells
were decided to be installed on the surIace oI the wing, an airIoil, upper surIace oI which is
smooth enough Ior putting solar cells without bending them, should be selected. This airIoil
should also be a low-Reynolds-number airIoil. The selection oI the airIoil was done by using
Design Foil soItware. Among 150 airIoils which had the two desired conditions, EP178 was
selected.
