The document describes the Chemical Accident Emergency Search and Rescue System (CAESRS) which was developed to monitor leaks of hazardous chemicals and ensure people's safety in hazardous areas. CAESRS integrates wireless sensor network and mobile robot technologies to detect chemical leaks and guide rescue efforts. The document outlines the components of CAESRS and presents a small-scale demonstration of the system. However, more research is still needed to solve challenges before full deployment of the system in real emergency situations.

ENGINEERING AN EMERGENCY SEARCH AND RESCUE
APPLICATION WITH WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK AND MOBILE
ROBOT Abstract CAESRS (Chemical Accident Emergency Search and Rescue System) was developed Ior the use oI monitoring the leakage oI hazardous chemicals and guaranteeing the saIety oI people in hazardous areas. Technologies such as WSN (wireless sensor network) and mobile robot need to be integrated to build up CAESRS. We describe the components oI the generic CAESRS's architecture in detail. A small-scale demonstration experiment is presented to highlight the concept and application oI the CAESRS to an actual chemical accident. Although our proposed system architecture provides a versatile Iramework Ior integration, a number oI new and interesting research problems need to be solved beIore actual deployment oI the system.
