Reaction and reform in History: The Green Revolution

Maya Patel Junior Division Individual Website

One of my favorite subjects in school is Geography. I bought a book called Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America by Harm de Blij. An excerpt of the book mentions Thomas Malthus, an English economist who predicted in the 18th century the downfall of human society if the population rate continued to grow due to the limited resources we have available on Earth. Two centuries later, in 1943, his prediction became a reality with the Bengal Famine. More than 4 million people died of starvation in India and present day Bangladesh, because the country couldnt provide enough food for its citizens. My ancestors are from India, so that caught my attention and I wanted to learn more about the subject. Indias independence from Britain on August 15, 1947 followed shortly after this terrible tragedy took place. The Indian government made it a priority that a catastrophic event such as the Bengal famine should never happen again. In researching for this topic I learnt many interesting things. Two very intelligent people, Norman Borlaug and Dr. M.S. Swaminathan contributed immensely to the Green Revolution. However, behind the scenes, every single one of Indias farmers contributed as well. I learnt about how my own family contributed to the success of the Green Revolution and how it changed my familys destiny. Many times you read about historic events in a book, but they usually dont have an impact on you or your family. This event, however, did have an impact on my family as it did on millions around the World. It turned my family from subsistence farmers to skilled and profitable farmers. My second favorite subject in school is Information Technology. Using the skills I learnt in that class, I wanted to create an interactive website to convey the message of how significant the Green revolution is in the Worlds history. I hope to immerse you in the time

period of when the Green Revolution took place by playing a clip of music from a famous Bollywood song about the Green Revolution. The song is called Mere desh ki dharti sonaa ugale, ugale hire motee which means My countrys soil reaps gold and pearls. This song has sentimental values to every Indian farmer, because they truly believe their crops are the value of gold and pearls.
