The definite article "the" is used with inventions, animal species, national groups described as a whole, when referring to only one of something, rivers, oceans, superlatives, and previously mentioned nouns. The indefinite article "a" or "an" is used with singular countable nouns that are mentioned for the first time or when the specific one does not matter. No article is used with most place names like streets, towns, countries, lakes, and mountains as well as uncountable, plural, and abstract nouns used generally.

Britain is the most interesting place Ive been. The story. Can you turn off the light, please? Ive got a red umbrella and a black one. I prefer the red one. Would you like an apple or a banana? The banana is very ripe. A scientist, a teacher, an engineer A machine. Id like an apple. Oxford Street, Italy, Beijing, China, Mount Everest. For countries and groups of islands in the plural we use the the United States, the Himalayas Paper, umbrellas. Accommodation is difficult to find.

ANY/EVERY/NO/SOME
Any and every can both be used to talk in general about all the members of a group. You can get an excellent meal in any/every restaurant in this street. They are different in meaning, however. Any looks at things one at a time. It means this or that or the other. Every looks at things together. It means all or this and that and the other. Havent you anything to do? Theres enough food for everyone. Any can also mean it doesnt matter which one. A: Which bag shall I bring? B: I dont mind. Any of them are fine. Nothing means no + anything. Theres nothing I can do to change his mind. Some is used in question when we expect people to answer Yes. Would you like some more coffee?
