Tutorial Sheet MEC067

This document contains tutorial problems related to hydraulic and pneumatic systems. It includes questions about determining the unit speed, unit power, and specific speed of turbines operating under different heads. It also asks to identify the type of turbine based on specific speed. Additional questions cover priming of pumps, types of centrifugal pumps based on working and casings, cavitation in centrifugal pumps, and types of losses in centrifugal pumps.

Tutorial sheet- MEC067 (Hydraulic and Pneumatic)

A turbine develops a power of 6000kW when running at a speed of 200 r.p.m. Determine unit speed and unit power if the turbine works under a head of 200 m. A turbine develops 5000 kW under a head of 200 m and runs at 300 r.p.m. and the discharge through the turbine is 1 m3/s. If during the summer season, head of the turbine drops to 195 m, find the power, speed and discharge through the turbine under the new head. A turbine develops 500 kW power under a head of 100 m at 200 r.p.m. What would be its normal speed and power under a head of 81 m. Suggest a turbine on the basis of specific speed, which develops a power of 8000kW when running at a speed of 200 r.p.m. Determine unit speed, unit power and specific speed if the turbine works under a head of 200 m. If the unit speed of a turbine is found 14.14 r.p.m. and it develops a power of 6500kW when running at a speed of 260 r.p.m., calculate the head at which turbine works and also suggest which type of the turbine it would be. What do you understand of priming of the pump and discuss the necessity of priming and its methods. Discuss about the types of the centrifugal pumps on the basis of working and write about various types of casings in case of centrifugal pumps. What do you understand of Cavitation in the centrifugal pumps and various types of losses in the centrifugal pumps?
