Schema Chapter 3

This document summarizes passive transport across the plasma membrane. It defines three types of passive transport: simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis. Simple diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration. Facilitated diffusion also moves molecules from high to low concentration, but uses carrier proteins. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a dilute to concentrated solution through a semi-permeable membrane. Examples of each type of passive transport are also provided.

CHAPTER 3: MOVEMENT OF SUBSTANCES ACROSS THE PLASMA MEMBRANE 1. The following diagram shows the structure of plasma membrane.

Label each structure.

2. State three types of passive transport. (a)simple diffusion (b)facilitated diffusion 3. Complete the flow chart below.
TRANSPORT

(c)osmosis

PASSIVE TRANSPORT

ACTIVE TRANSPORT

Simple diffusion The movement of molecules from region of high concentration to

region of low concentration.

Facilitated diffusion

Osmosis The movement of water molecules from dilute solution to a concentrated solution across a Semi-permeable membrane. Examples: 1. Water uptake by plant
roots. 2. Osmoregulation in aquatic organisms.

Examples: 1. Gaseous
exchange between alveoli and blood capillaries during respiration 2. Gaseous exchange through stomata of leaves during photosynthesis. 4.

The movement of molecules from region of high concentration to a region of low concentration with the help of Carrier proteins. Examples: 1. Absorption of
glucose and amino acids in the villi. 2. diffusion of glucose from blood plasma into red blood cells.

The movement of molecules against concentration gradient by using carrier protein and energy ( ATP ). Examples: 1. Uptake of mineral
salts and ions by root hairs 2. the movement of sodium ions into the cells lining the kidney tubules.
