Dear Parents and Guardians, I would like to communicate all the procedures and expectations of my class, so that your

student can be as successful as possible. This booklet contains all of my classroom policies and expectations. Please take a minute to look it over with your student (we will be doing the same in class). I would especially like to point out page 6, which tells what your student can do if he/she needs extra help. Class notes and video lessons will be available each day, and can be a great resource for students. If you have any questions or concerns, the easiest way to contact me is by email: I am usually able to reply in less than 24 hours. Thank you for your support, and I am looking forward to a GREAT year! Sincerely,

Welcome to Advanced Algebra!!

Dear Students, When you enter this room you are observers, thinkers, and problem solvers. You will discover patterns and make predictions. You will persevere. You will try. You will mess up. You will try again. You will be mathematicians. And we will get along just fine. Sincerely, Mrs. Gruen

Binder Setup How to Start Class

Pick up your copy of todays lesson, it is right by the door. Do your bell work and raise your hand for a green star. Coach the rest of your group as needed until you all have green stars. Move on to the DO NEXT. Math conversations are encouraged. You will need a 1 - inch binder and 8 dividers for this class. This will replace your textbook and be 10% of your grade, so it is pretty important. This booklet should be clearly visible inside the front pocket of your binder at all times. Divider #1 Label The Basics (Unit 1) Divider #2 Label Straight Lines (Unit 2) Divider #3 Label Systems and Inequalities (Unit 3) Divider #4 Label Need to Know (Unit 4) Divider #5 Label Quadratics (Unit 5) Divider #6 Label Graphs (Unit 6) Divider #7 Label Radicals (Unit 7) Divider #8 Quizzes After each divider, you will put your practice worksheets in order. They will also be numbered to make it easy for you. It is important to include EVERY assignment, even if you did not complete it or hand it in. YOUR FIRST NOTEBOOK CHECK WILL BE THURSDAY, AUGUST 30TH. Page 11

How to End Class

Keep your materials out until one minute (or less) remains. Make sure all your supplies are returned. Stay in your seat until the bell rings.

How to Coach
Coaching is an important part of this class. When students coach each other well, everyone benefits. Watch this YouTube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4880PJnO2E Why is this an example of good coaching?

How to Grade Your Practice

Each day you will put a grade on your practice and hand it in at the beginning of class. Use this formula: Number correct Total number x 5 = SCORE (dont worry, it will be on each paper) Your score will usually be a decimal, round it to the nearest tenth.

ABSENT and LATE HOMEWORK Policy Being in class is important. I hope youll be here every day. But if you cant . . . Pick up your assignment in the GREEN crate, in the folder numbered according to the date you will be absent. If you are absent for a school event (sports, choir, ffa, journalism, field trip, etc), you must pick up the assignment in advance and turn it in on the scheduled due date. If you are absent for an excused emergency (sickness, etc.), pick it up in the same place and turn it in within two days of your absence. Late homework will receive a zero, UNLESS you use a late homework pass (youll get four of them). Late homework passes may be turned in at the end of the semester for extra credit

Heres the Catch

In order to count for credit, each problem MUST have two things: 1. Correct Work 2. Correct Answer You can check the margin to make sure your answer is correct. It is your responsibility to make sure that your work leads to that correct answer. Any problem that does not have correct work leading to the correct answer does not count for credit. You will want to make sure you have scored your paper correctly, but more on that later . . . Page 8

NEED HELP?
If you need help, you are in luck. There are LOTS of ways to get it. 1. Check your school email, I will send out a pdf of the notes EVERY DAY!!! 2. Go Online: Check our class website. Heres where I will put a recording of each days lesson. 3. See Mrs. Gruen before school at 7:45 or after school until 4:00. 4. Ask Mrs. Gruen for a referral to the tutoring room. 5. Talk to your friends who were in class and ask them to fill you in.
Page 6

How to Practice (there is a right way and a wrong way) 1. Work the problem. (You must justify your answer to get credit!) 2. Check your answer by looking in the margin. Correct practice is the only practice that matters!! 3. If you find your answer, good job!! Cross it off and move on. 4. If you cant find your answer, check your work, find your mistake and fix it, then continue to the next problem. Why do you think it is important to practice this way?
