Using Modals to Make Polite Requests Topic: Materials: Objective: Using modals to make polite requests Scenario Cards Understand, follow or give instructions, including commands and polite requests. (CC 0.1.7)

Warm Up: (whole group) 1. Write dialogue on the board: Employee: Hey you, I need to tell you something. Supervisor: What do you want? Employee: I will be late tomorrow. No problem? Supervisor: Huh? 2. Ask Ss if this is an appropriate conversation with a supervisor. Ask Ss why or why not? 3. Ask Ss to help you revise the dialogue using modals to make the conversation more appropriate. For example: Employee: Excuse me, may I speak with you? Supervisor: Sure. Whats up? Employee: May I come in 10 minutes late tomorrow? I need to take my daughter to school. Supervisor: Yes, you can. Thank you for asking. Communicative Practice: (pairs) (whole group) Model Activity: Choose a scenario card and select 2 Volunteers to act out the scene. Write down the dialogue that they had. Discuss their dialogue with the whole class. Ask for possible alternatives. 1. 2. 3. 4. Give each pair a scenario card. In pairs, Ss should write a dialogue using modals. Pairs will then perform their scenario for the class. As a class, they will discuss the choices made by the pair and suggest alternatives.

Additional Practice: 1. Have Ss change partners and pick a new scenario card. 2. Have Ss role-play the situation. 3. Write down the dialogue.
