Bats: Creatures of
the night
dr. david Kerridge is a retired college
professor living in Merritt. david was the
founding professor of the Biology depart-
ment at Malaspina College in nanaimo
(now Vancouver Island University), and
taught and did research there for many
years. With a BSc from University of Vic-
toria, an MSc from Carleton University,
Ottawa, and a Phd from texas tech Uni-
versity, david has extensive research ex-
perience, especially with small mammals.
His fascination with bats was triggered as
a student, and uring his tenure at
Malaspina College he undertook diverse
research on bats including genetics,
colony location & banding.

david will delve into the mysterious noc-
turnal world of bats on thurs. Jan. 17,
7pm, nVIt Lecture theatre. all welcome

Police attend
On January 5, just after noon, Merritt
RCMP received information that 4 chil-
dren under the age of 5 had been left un-
attended by their parent since the early
morning hours. Members attended a res-
idence at 1700 block Menzies St. where
the children were temporarily being
cared for by a neighbour. the Ministry of
Children and Family removed the chil-
dren, while the investigation continues
and charges are pending against a 28-
year old Merritt woman.
On January 7, at approx. 6:30pm, police
received info that a distraught male may
be contemplating suicide. Merritt RCMP
members and members of the South
Okanagan traffic Services began what be-
came an intensive 3-hr search for the male.
He was believed to have entered a
wooded area outside of town. He was
eventually located and transported to
nVGH for treatment of minor injuries ac-
quired while trekking through the bush.
a little later that evening, police re-
ceived a request to conduct a well-being
check at an elderly females residence as
she had not been seen or heard from for
at least 2 days. Members attended and
gained entry to the 2300 blk Garcia St.
residence. the 87-year old female was located inside the residence in dire health and
was transported by ambulance to the nicola Valley Hospital.
