BUILDING OVERVIEW

Can the design of a university residence building enhance overall the student learning experience? Can it help to build community more broadly? And can the design of a university residence building act as a catalyst for positive change and renewal of the urban environment? The Have a Nice Day building consists of mainly two parts. A public part with access for everyone and a student housing part for the students. Rather than making a convetional student housing project with the oors isolated from each other we have chosen to create a single space owing from oor to oor throughout the student housing part, the vertical livingroom. This creates a diversity in the spaces provided and emphazises the connections between oors. The private sleeping units are minimized in order to give space to the large vertical livingroom. The public ground oors holds computers, rooms for group activities, gym, and a swimmingpool. These are public spaces free for everyone to use and will serve as an important part of the neighbourhoods streetlife. So come on in!

THE VERTICAL CAMPUS
A traditional campus is situated on the countryside with lots of big open spaces and gardens. The Ryerson Campus is situated in the heart of Toronto, Canadas dense capital. This requires a dense campus with higher buildings and more space efcient solutions. The traditional campus has lots of green surfaces and facilities that makes a bigger footprint on the ground. The new urban campus has acces to everything the city has to offer and can incorporate the citys functions in its own system.
KNOWLEDGE TO THE COMMUNITY
Ryerson University and its students holds great knowledge. Some of this knowledge can be distributed to the community. The bottom oors of the H.A.N.D building is a public livingroom with computors and lecture halls. Here anyone can take part of computor programs and internet streamed lectures provided by the university. The students themselves are giving free lectures in the basics of computer knowledge, and on topics related to the different faculties of Ryerson. This way H.A.N.D becomes a semiacademic connection between Ryerson and the community, where knowledge is shared and interest arouses in future Ryerson students.
A BIKE FOR EVERY STUDENT
The H.A.N.D. Student House is situated along one of the major bicycling paths in Toronto. On a bike you can reach all the central parts of Toronto within minutes. The H.A.N.D. Student House is actually just a node in a brand new public transport system based on bicycling where 500 of the new bikes are available in the H.A.N.D. bicycle garage. Public transport using bikes are allready in use in many cities in Europe and provide an environment friendly, cheap and easy way of getting around town. Bikes for all the H.A.N.D. students but also for the people of Toronto! BICYCLING STATION NODES UNION STATION DUNDAS SUBWAY STATION

HAVE A NICE DAY STUDENT HOUSE
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Located at the southeast corner of Gerrard and Mutual streets, the Have a Nice Day Student House acts as a gateway to the campus arriving from the east. Every morning ve or six hundred students ows through the streets of Toronto by bike, making their way to school. The new building with its public programme acts as a catalyst for positive change and contributes positively to the neighbourhood, and to Toronto.
STRUCTURE
The structure consists of a loadbearing core and a facade with steel ribbons. The oors are hung from the top trusses with theese steel ribbons. Some of the ribbons are strapped to the ground. The torsional forces are dealt with by the structure of walls and oors in the building. The four ground oors are carried by large trusses. The structure also adds to the appearance of H.A.N.D., with steel ribbons resembling a heavy summer rain or perhaps the hanging foliage of the rainforests of Borneo?

THE HOUSE AS A JUNGLE
Students come to Ryerson from one hundred and fortytwo countries. What would be the perfect analogue for this diversity? Animals, of course! Animals from differrent corners of the world represent the multitudes the building holds. An animal is not politically charged, as for example ags might be, and are easy to recognize. The different milieus of the H.A.N.D. Student House has been given their own animal theme. Every oor gets its own personality, and its easy to explain where you live: - I live on the Killer bee oor. or: - See you in the giraffe room.

... This is the vertical livingroom. As you probably noticed you had to take of your shoes before entering. I rst thought that it was a bit strange but now that Im used to it I actually really like it. I mean you instantly get the feeling of being home now when you take of your shoes. It is almost like in the summer when you take of your shoes in the park....

... There are lots of things you can do here and they are scattered all over the building. For example over there you can play squash and here you can play videogames. This big room is owing through all of the oors so you can actually walk through the whole building without using the elevator....
... Here you can hang out with your nehgbourhood oormates while doing your laundry. People tend to gather here, so the washing machines are actually a social hotspot here! However, if you need a quiet place for yourself there are studyrooms as well as prayingrooms...
... You share kitchen with 7 other people from the same oor. Its a nice way to get to know some of your neighbours. But you can of course eat and cook with your friends on other oors too! A couple of times a year we have a big dinner for several oors where we set up long tables. Its often a big hit!...
... Out here is a garden. Nice, eh? On the 20th oor! This is cherry tree and from up there, on the balcony, you can pick the ripe berries when the season is right. Here is a good place for BBQs in the spring and summer. With this view and when the weather is good its a perfect place for sunbathing...
... As you probably have noticed the bedrooms are pretty small to give room to the huge livingroom. But in your bedroom you basically have all you need. And this whole wall on the opposite side of your bed is in fact a big whiteboard. Here you can write notes, draw pictures or put up photos and posters.
