Make Yourself Comfortable
Use these pointers to create a Shavasana nest, for a deeper relaxation and a profound experience of stillness and inner peace.
1. Lie on your back on the floor, with several rolled blankets, cushions or bolsters under your knees so that the back of your waist rests easily on the floor. Let your feet sink low, and if your heels dont land on the floor, fill in the space under them. You may instead prefer to lay your feet and lower legs on the seat of the couch or a chair. 2. Begin with your heels almost touching. Then soften your legs and allow your knees and toes to spiral gently outward.
3. Extend your arms softly near your sides, and turn your palms to face upward. Or bend your elbows and lay your hands on your belly with your palms facing down. 4. You may need a soft cushion under your head to level out your forehead and chin so the back of your neck will lengthen and soften. 5. A light eye bag or folded washcloth on your eyebrows (not your eyes) will help you settle more deeply inward.
Ujjayi Pranayama
(Yoga Breathing Practice)
This easy and powerful breathing practice releases muscular tension and offers deep physical, emotional and mental healing. Your primary focus is on the inner sound of your breath, which soothes your mind and nervous system and gives a profound sense of peace and well being. It also enlivens your cells as it increases your strength and vitality, creates enthusiasm for life and a positive attitude. While Ujjayi Pranayama is very good for those with high blood pressure or coronary troubles, it is especially important that you do not hold your breath, especially after your inhalation. Cultivate an easy breath, or use Swamijis recording of Easy Breathing on her CD entitled Lifes Breath. Caution: Do not do Ujjayi during or after yoga poses.
Tamboura
The yoga of sound plays an important part in Swamijis teachings. On two tracks, the tamboura provides a quiet background for Swamijis words. This beautiful stringed instrument from India provides a richly layered sound that vibrates through the room and through your being. Designed by ancient sages to recreate one of the inner sounds that is heard in deep meditation, the sustained tones and interwoven vibrations of the tamboura draw you progressively and deliciously inward.
Guided Awareness
Swamiji takes you on a guided tour of your body, inviting you to saturate it with awareness, step by step. Your own awareness has a profoundly relaxing effect, allowing you to inhabit your body more fully, an experience that quiets your minds restlessness and settles you into yourself.
