This really is one of the best local events in the area throughout the summer, as the whole village is involved in creating a great day out for everyone. Other than a couple of gardens, all the village gardens looked brilliant, with so many of the local people getting involved to make this Sunday, a Sunday to remember. Along with at least 45 to 50 others, I took my classic VW car along to join a great display of both cars and tractors. With tea, coffee, cakes & lunches on offer in the Village Hall, it is well worth pencilling into your social diary for next year.

At last some decent summer weather and at last I am able to get into the North Sea looking at least a million dollars for a refreshing swim. It is something I did every day, in the early days went we first moved to Norfolk from Stamford in Lincolnshire. An example of my lean and keen body has been kindly sent in from Nigel Holmes, who had his mobile phone with him while I took one of my now regular dips in the sea off Mundesley. Thank you Nigel for your photograph, but more importantly thanks for your regular cartoon you have been contributing each issue: MUN & Little Tankie on Page 18. As Nigel is going to be writing two Pantomine Scripts and has a book to finish over the next few months, he will not have time to send us any cartoons for a while. I hope for not too long Nigel as I always enjoy them. Thanks good Sir. I also enjoyed going to the Circus this week in Mundesley as it was such good fun. (Page 10). The two memories that I have of going to the circus as a child were: When my mother, my two brothers and I went to pick apples in the afternoon to feed them to a group of elephants outside the circus with a baby elephant getting in on the action and being able to get an apple as well. The other elephant occasion was going to the circus with a group of about 80 young boys and during the interval all lining up against a fence for a wee. What a sight we were for the rest of the audience.

I would like to thank Alex Hannah for his tour Backstage on the Cromer Pier See Page 8 I would definitely recommend taking one of these trips around the back stage with Alex. I would also like to draw attention to the article about Lisa Bumpfrey, with her advert for her Tea Rooms on Page 13. Lisas family in Cromer are a lovely bunch of jolly souls and I am sure that Lisa will make a great success of her business in North Lodge Park. In just a matter of a few weeks now Cromers Carnival will be with us all. We have listed the Childrens Weeks that lead up to the main Carnival Week. See Page 18. I will be out there with my camera taking good and dreadful photos of everyone. Be assured that it is the dreadful pictures that get published, of course.

The funds raised at the Mundesley Christmas Eve Pageant totalling approx. 300 were shared between Norwich Cruse Bereavement & Hayleys Kidney Transplant Fund. This had brought the total for Hayleys Fund to 1,030. Peter Button with his Pink Hair Sponsorship raised much of this and the rest from the Ship Inn and the Pageant. Hayley has been back on one of her frequent visits to hospital where her condition has stabilised enough to delay the transplant for the foreseeable future. Good news indeed. We are handing the money over to her dad, Chris as they are planning a mini celebration in Euro Disney this September. Hayley is pleased and very, very grateful. She is now planning on raising funds herself for a charity (to be decided) but possibly for other Kidney Patients like herself sometime in the late Autumn. As to the Pageant - traditionally held on Christmas Eve to remind people of the real reason we celebrate at Christmas - it looks very much as if there will not be one for 2013. It seems odd to be thinking about Christmas in this lovely weather, but if the Pageant is to happen plans need to be in place soon. The Parish Council, who asked for the Pageant to be restarted after the originals of 1995 & 1996, five years ago have had no success in finding a new Director.
Jo is stepping down this time as she wants to visit her grandson and family in Japan. The Parish council have also been asked if they could find a suitable home for the costumes etc. and it would be a pity to lose them after so much effort and they would be available for another year. If anyone or a group of people are interested in either taking on the Pageant or more urgently helping to find costume space as The Ship Inn, who has kindly looked after them for the past year now needs the space please contact Jo Berry on: 01263 720 743 or by e-mail: [email protected] Many thanks, Jo Berry on behalf of the former Mundesley Christmas Eve Pageant Committee On behalf of Trunch Open Gardens Committee, I would like to say a huge thank you for coming last Sunday to judge the scarecrows. We had a fabulous turnout on the day and it is looking like we made over 3000 to go towards Trunch Village Projects. We don`t have the full final figure as yet as we are still waiting for some odd bits to come in. Again thank you for coming and we hope you enjoyed it Lyn Bothway

My wife and I were strolling along Mundesley beach just before sunset when we witnessed what I can only explain as a Reggie Perrin moment. A gentleman came down onto the beach and proceeded to remove his clothing. He left them in a pile on the sand and waded into the sea, going for full immersion.
by Len Saculla Im a big fan of Cromer Carnival, The Red Arrows and the marquee bars But my favourite is the sunny Sunday When they display the Classic cars. As Tony Shipp announces, Can the glamorous grannies come to the arena? Ill be looking at a Buick Eight Or a dear old Ford Cortina. When I pick myself a favourite Its an American car that wins Something space age from the rock and roll years, With lots of chrome and fins. So when the cars are parked on the field I know Carnival has arrived. I could stand and dream of owning them all Except I cannot drive! I fully agree with your Trimingham correspondent (Issue 016) - there is nothing nicer to look than a bank or meadow of wild flowers, however The Green on Mundesley sea-front is neither a bank or a meadow and I had no idea North Norfolk District Council intended it to be such. Kind Regards Janet Munro Mundesley-On-Sea
Dear Philip,
Dear Editor,
I am researching the artist Walter Starmer (1877 - 1961) who lived in Mundesley from around 1900 until 1914. He painted many local views and it is possible some of them survive in the area. He exhibited in both Mundesley and Cromer. More particularly I am trying to identify the house and studio where he lived which at the time was called Breeze Mount or Breezemount. Walter lived with his sister Edith Starmer who was also an artist. Any information would be gratefully received. Alan Walker [email protected]
I did manage to take a quick photograph and would request your readers to report back if they have seen this man. He may have come from The Home for the Bewildered and I think someone should let them know. Regards. Nigel Holmes Mundesley

A Great Day.....
..for both the NNDC and BeWILDerwood on Thursday July 18th, when the council & Countryside Ltd (VNNC&C) signed a partnership agreement guaranteeing council support for the tourism body to promote and develop tourism in Nth Norfolk for the next three years.
Above: Michael Timewell, (In a dark shirt) the owner of Blue Sky Leisure, which includes the award-winning Kelling Heath Holiday Park and Woodhill Park standing next to Cabinet member for Business Enterprise and Econ Development Russell Wright (Pen in hand). The agreement signed on July 18th, guarantees funding from the NNDC of 105k over three years , 50k this year dropping to 35k in 14/15 and 20k in the following year. After which VNNC & C are tasked to become self-sustaining. Michael Timewall said: North Norfolk District Council are to be congratulated for their vision and ambition.
After a very nice picnic lunch, I spent some time tooking around BeWILDerwood and was very impressed by the whole place. This was the first time that I had been to this fun attraction, and I was left in no doubt that it will continue to be a very popular place for visitors and locals, to take their young families to enjoy. The Editor would like to thank Andy Davison for supplying these photos for the NNDC. PK
All with a smile and at the decent rate, especially if he does several of those jobs that you have been meaning to do for years. And, I would add, at decently low price to fit your pocket. Stuart is providing a service that does all those jobs that you have been meaning to get around to for ages, but not done yet. My advice is very simple: Give him a ring today and get him to pop round to give you a quote. PK
On Saturday July 20th I took part in one of the first tours of the Cromer Pier. The tour started at 10am and ran for just short of an hour. It was conducted by Alex Hannah who works for the Pier, operating all the lighting and sounds that makes the Pier Show, a show worth watching. Alex kicked off by giving us a brief history of the famous Cromer Pier, while explaining how everything worked, before taking us on to the stage and then backstage. I was pleased to see that our former lodger, the lovely Jessica Bedford, had put her name on part of the ceiling alongside numerous others who have spent their summers working for Openwide. A delightful example of the Piers colourful history. I was impressed by how all the stage sets are operated from back stage and how everything is changed over in a couple of hours between Show One and Show Two every week. I had never realised before that there is so very little room back stage to pull of any show, but it all works well every time, thanks to the team in the front of house and back stage. These excellent tours are held every Saturday at 10am, 10.45am & 11.30am. They cost 2 per person or free if you are a loyalty card holder or have purchased a ticket to the 2013 Seaside Special.
Above L-R: Matt Ansess (Box Office Manager) and Alex Hannah. Right L-R : Kit, James & Andrew Share from Leicestershire, all of whom enjoyed their tour and gave it a 10 out of 10 score. They have already booked their tickets for that evenings show. All the money which is raised from the tours will go to the heart defibrillator fund for Cromer Pier. Alex has indeed spent many years working on the Pier, even longer than Openwide have been involved in operating the Pier Shows and this experience enables him to give a great account of how the shows operate. Cat Finlayson...
..........from Knapton, has won 1st Place in the exciting Art Couture Body Paint Awards held in Painswick, Gloucestershire. The event draws students, designers and artists from around the country and competitors create wearable art to be judged on a catwalk in front of a packed audience of visitors and celebrities.
Cat does not paint nudes and models all wear knickers at least. Most donate themselves in return for the experience and the photographs. Body decoration is an ancient art, but recently it has become more professional. Cat is proudly included amongst the UKs top painters. Cameleon Bodypaint is sponsoring me for the World Championships next year. My ex-student, Jennie Roberts will be my assistant - you need 2 good painters working to even get into the top
This year body paint designs had to be Magic. Model Laurence Caird, pictured above with Cat, asked to be steam-punk. Researching Magic I found that its golden age of creativity was the early Victorian period when it began in theatres, and many tricks we know today were invented. Magicians built incredibly sophisticated automatons; one drew 200 celebrities portraits. Cat created her imaginings of the inner workings & outer clothing of a Victorian robot on Laurences front, using brush & sponge. His back displays countryside mysticism using the heavens and nature changing to shows where new-fangled mechanics & electricity confounded audiences. Cat made his hat by cutting up an old yoga mat and painting it to look like ironwork.
30 to compete on the 2nd day. Ill plan for that as soon as my summer rush is over! Cat began face painting as an Education Officer at Banham Zoo & Suffolk Wildlife Trust. She was UK Pro Face Painter of the Year 2007 & 08, 5th in World Awards and winner of the Phizzog Phestival 2011, Body Factory 2012. Her work has been published in industry magazines and books. She was the lead Face Painter / sole body Artist for the Hong Kong Rugby 7s and flown to Shanghai to represent the UK in Chinas first body paint event. Cat paints and teaches in Norfolk and is often seen at local events, especially Bewilderwood.
Our Information Point is now completed and was officially launched by Norman Lamb MP last Saturday, watched by interested villagers and curious visitors. Mr.Lamb was welcomed by the Chairman of the Council, who thanked everyone who had worked so hard to bring the project to fruition, in particular Bruce Stratton, Di Rolph, Derek Paul, Gary Bumphrey and Joan Mapperley. He also thanked Michael Maher for his generous gesture in providing the site and Pauline Clarke for volunteering to plant and maintain the flower trough. Mr.Lamb began by mentioning that he had not opened a phone box before, and went on to congratulate Overstrand Parish Council for providing such an innovative and interesting facility. In his opinion Overstrand is a vibrant and go-ahead village, which has much to commend it. He then cut the ribbon, and declared the Information Point well and truly open! Thanks to Joan Mapperly for this.
Every year since 2009 a marquee is placed on Gold Park and the Circus Ferrel turns up to entertain and amuse any and everyone prepared to shell out 6.00 each. Like any good modern circus these days, there are no animals involved, however the performers are a delight to watch and would be enjoyed by everyone who turned up, however old or young they may be. Above on the left is Martin Taylor and on the right is Lynette Taylor, who runs the show in their beautiful tent in Gold Park. I strolled along with Brenda and Nigel Holmes who are great fans of this circus, Nigel has on occasions stood in as the ring-master while Lynette has been away on family matters. (Pictured on Right) Brenda, Martin & Nigel As it was their Opening night, one somehow rather expected there to be a few mistakes made by the cast. Not a bit of it. After a great introduction at the start of the performance, it all fell into place brilliantly and the atomosphere was great fun and action packed. Not only did the children enjoy this show but their parents and grandparents loved it also.
The little girl in front of us really enjoyed every moment of the show with her grandfather. Great background music livened up the show before Tom (in cowboy hat) did his great routine with his wheel and Matt (in the Red Shirt) juggled up to eight balls all at once right up to the roof of the large tent. Everyone I spoke to, while enjoying the candy floss I treated myself to during the interval and after the show, really enjoyed the evening of great fun and such a refreshing experience of a real circus. The Circus is open until the 8th August with performances on the 1st August at 2pm, 4th at 2pm, 5th at 5pm, 6th at 2pm 7th at both 2and 5pm and the 8th at 2pm. For more information visit their website: www.circusferrel.com or phone them on 07525 053 225 PK

The Brain Teaser in Issue 016
Hi Philip,
Your brain teaser had me confused for a while, but..the answer is in the fact that it is added up incorrectly, the key to it is in the 2 that the waiter has. It should be subtracted first, then added to the 3 the diners have, so: 3 X 9 = 27 minus 2 = 25 now take that 2 add it to the 3 = 5 + 25 = 30 Regards Russell Sparkes Ps I couldnt do it but I knew a man who could!
Dear Philip,
Dear Philip,
The teaser is based on a false premise, i e that the meal cost 30. It didnt - it only cost 25, as evidenced by the fact that the cashier, on receiving 30, returned 5. Because the diners each got 1 back from their 10 they believe the combined cost of the snacks was 27 (9x3= 27). So in fact they have actually paid 2 more than the amount the cashier received. That 2 has ended up in the waiters pocket. Regards Robert Miller
Re Missing pound! There is no missing pound. Ask two questions Q1 How much money was there? A = 30 Q2 How much money is there now and this Restaurant Owner has 25.00, each of the diners has 1, the waiter has 2. 25 + 3 + 2 = 30. A pilfering waiter and clever use of words to confuse!. The last statement should have read the 3 diners each paid 9 and they still have a pound each, the restaurant owner only has 25 as his pilfering waiter stole 2. Regards Steve Harber
Dear Philip,
Simple Sum : 10+10+10= 30 The restaurant charged 25 leaving 5 The waiter took 2 leaving 3 Therefore 30-3=27 or 9x3 There is no missing pound as the final calculation in the letter is wrong 3x9=27 the waiter TOOK 2 which means 27-2=25 and not gave 2 which would equal 29 - the alleged answer. Hope thats simplified it enough for you. Regards Nigel Robinson
Dear Philip,
Dear Philip,
The diners each get 1 back, so have paid 9 each, a total of 27 for their meals. This is 2 more than the required 25. The 2 is in the waiters pocket. The cashier gets 25 for the meals, the diners get 1 back each and the waiter gets 2. 25+3+2 =30. Janet Hann Cromer

In response to your request for a solution to the Brain Teaser that I sent you. It is in the way in which the question is posed. I don`t believe there is an answer, although logic tells you there ought to be one and hence you can spend a long time trying to puzzle it out. In reality the restaurant owner has 25, the waiter 2 and the three men 1 each. If you could issue a challenge to the Crabtales community to come up with their answers, it could prove interesting. Regards Peter Ellis

I must say that the bushes could easily be cut back on both sides of the path better known as the Doctors Steps. A job of less than 30 minutes, would surely be enough to ensure that visitors and locals would not be putting their hands on the thorns instead of the hand rails.
Pictured Above L-R: Ellen French, Maddy Groom and Steve Cottingham brightening up Cromer. I have to say this really does put a shine to this busy Cromer Street. Steve tells me that if you book a childrens party in his Pizza House, both Minnie and Micky will turn up to liven up your party. PK. I imagine it is the responsibility of the NNDC to cut these thorns back on a regular basis. After a long and sunny day on the beach, the last thing you want is to cut your hands on thorns, while walking home. What do you think on this matter ? PK

her lunch in this great local cafe. They are indeed a busy and happy family. Lisa took on the Tea Rooms in April this year and has turned it into a busy, friendly & welcoming place, well worth checking out for either a quick snack or lunch, on any of the 7 days a week they are open. Everything, whenever possible, is home made and very tasty and more importantly at a price you can well afford. The Tea Rooms are situated next to the Boating lake so Lisa also sells boats to use on it. I can clearly see why the judges decided that Lisa should be their Cromer Carnival Queen in 1990. In simple terms this lovely young lady is doing her bit for Cromer residents and visitors alike by providing such a great place to visit on a regular basis. PK

the property as an investment, or did not predominate ... over that of holding property as an investment. It now seems that the key to obtaining BPR (or not) is what additional services are provided over and above the basic letting. The more intrusive the landlord is the better. The provision of homemade cakes & jam could be the key to obtaining this very valuable tax relief. A fighting fund is being organised to appeal. It is felt that this was a case that HM Revenue chose carefully because the owner was very much absent in the letting of the property and the holidaymakers were left to their own devices; other cases might be more successful. Kindness, Compassion & Chronic Pain specialists, trials on different medications, advice
If someone you love experiences a chronic pain condition, it is so easy to become overwhelmed with information on the internet etc such as this can cure anything statements. Be assured, a lot of professionals in the medical field do not understand chronic pain conditions and admit to it. It is easy to become overwhelmed by their condition and how to deal with it. What you need to remember most is: a person is more than their diagnosis. While the person you love lifes circumstances may have changed, the fundamental core of this person has not changed. They may have been a crazy snowboarder, fit, active and then their whole world shattered around them. They feel bad enough about themselves as it is and this is why they need to share your love, laughter, and compassion more than ever. Why? To be fair, anyone can be tired and anyone can experience pain. The world seems to demand attention at all times. However, chronic pain tiredness is something else...the exhaustion is psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual and can be akin to carrying around a lead safe filled with more lead. So to say you havent done this, that or the other, you used to be able to, or why dont you is hardly conducive to them feeling good about themselves. Imagine having flu like symptoms...those aches which wont go away, you may feel miserable, tired, not able to get out of bed and enjoy the things you love doing...now imagine that each day of your life or every moment of your life. Sometimes even a touch is painful. The pain is real. They may feel abandoned by the medical profession, their friends and their family.... months of seeing doctors, consultants,
from everyone and anyone is exhausting. Pain can cause brain fog (neurological, chemical imbalance or their medication) ..so you may be subjected to I cant find my keys, where is my wallet. Be patient - show some compassion - they dont want to be in this state and it can be frightening and bewildering at times. They may experience mood changes - this can also be neurological/chemical but also environmental in that they may want to work, volunteer, go for a walk...and then, almost immediately, cannot. Frustrating, huh? You may think, hey, this is a one way street here ....why should I do all the love and compassion stuff...what about me? Well, the strange thing about love & compassion is that it reflects, comes back to you, bounces around, absorbs, re-wires the brain and is, probably, one of the best drugs available. Yes, you may feel angry, frustrated, lost, fed up with the person who has the chronic pain condition and these are natural and understandable feelings. However, take a step back once in a while to consider these two statements by the Dalai Lama: Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. and If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. Thanks to Bee for this.

After A Long...... Well Done .......night of making love, the guy notices Crossways a photo of another man, on the womans
nightstand by the bed. He begins to worry. Is this your husband? he nervously asks. No, silly, she replies, snuggling up to him. Your boyfriend, then? he continues. No, not at all, she says, nibbling at his ear. Is it your dad or your brother? he inquires, hoping to be reassured. No, no! You are so hot when youre jealous! she answers. Well, who in the hell is he, then? he demands. She whispers in his ear: Thats me before the surgery. Thanks to David Thorne for this
L-R: Anna & Dave Jackson It is jolly good news for Crossways tobacconists, in Cromers Chapel Street, as they have been awarded the Tobacco Retailer Of The Year by the Pipe Maker livery company Trophy. This shop is one of very few left in this country and has been around for a very long time in the same location. Since Dave took over the business back in December 2011, the place has been tidied up with new carpet on the floor etc etc. Whether you are a smoker or not, it is well worth having a quick look in the doorway. Well done Dave & Anna. PK
