Upload Tips Extra

The document discusses tips for uploading files larger than 50KB to the SPLASH message board forum. A user asks for suggestions on uploading a 350KB image file. Others respond with suggestions to use external image hosting services like Photobucket or Picasa to upload the file and then post just the link. Compressing or resizing the image with a free program like IrfanView is also suggested. The discussion continues with comments about forums generally relying on external hosting due to bandwidth limitations.

"Tips on uploading files to this forum. 50K limit frustrating." I am in need of help for a dormer situation. I have a hardcopy of an existing plan that is very similar to what the customer wants. I want to post this image with my question so it makes sense to whomever looks at it. I have taking a picture of this with my phone and emailed it to myself as a JPG. However the image is 350K, I compressed the image to a zip file and only got it down to 250K. Any suggestions? I would really like to get this stuff posted.

It worked, Thank you for your help. Didn't quite work on the first test but worked perfectly trying with the direct link the 2nd time. Sorry to the moderator of the forum for the test posts. It won't hurt my feelings if you remove these posts. Thanks again.

Brad, the procedure you've just learned is very important. I also use something similar using Dropbox for large .pdf files I need to send to clients. With Dropbox I upload the .pdfs to my webspace on their server, copy the link then post the link in my email to the client. Now my emails are tiny by comparison because they only contain a weblink rather then a large file. Moderator Edit: I've learned shop talk only, don't Rant/Rave, Cuss or Swear or talk politics and your posts are good to go. The only problem with using an online site to link photos to your message is that if the image or photo is removed from the online site or the account is closed the image is gone forever from your message and will not be able to be seen anymore. I would suggest down loading INFRANVIEW, free and it only takes a few seconds to resize the same image to below 50kb.

http://www.irfanview.com/ if what your using isn't irfanview, might be worth looking into. and its free. IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for noncommercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 , 2008, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8. (click here for IrfanView EULA) It is designed to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals. IrfanView seeks to create unique, new and interesting features, unlike some other graphic viewers, whose whole "creativity" is based on feature cloning, stealing of ideas and whole dialogs from ACDSee and/or IrfanView! (for example: XnView has been stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, for 10+ years). IrfanView was the first Windows graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple (animated) GIF support. One of the first graphic viewers WORLDWIDE with Multipage TIF support. The first graphic viewer WORLDWIDE with Multiple ICO support. Some IrfanView features: Many supported file formats (click here the list of formats) Multi language support Thumbnail/preview option Paint option - to draw lines, circles, arrows, straighten image etc. Toolbar skins option Slideshow (save slideshow as EXE/SCR or burn it to CD) Show EXIF/IPTC/Comment text in Slideshow/Fullscreen etc. Support for Adobe Photoshop Filters Fast directory view (moving through directory) Batch conversion (with advanced image processing) Multipage TIF editing File search Email option Multimedia player Print option Support for embedded color profiles in JPG/TIF Change color depth Scan (batch scan) support Cut/crop Add overlay text/image (watermark) IPTC editing Effects (Sharpen, Blur, Adobe 8BF, Filter Factory, Filters Unlimited, etc.) Screen Capturing Extract icons from EXE/DLL/ICLs Lossless JPG rotation Unicode support Many hotkeys Many command line options Many PlugIns Only one EXE-File, no DLLs, no Shareware messages like "I Agree" or "Evaluation expired" No registry changes without user action/permission! and much much more

I used to think in this day and age of the countless forum templates and formats that for SPLASH to still have a 50kb limit on uploads was ridiculous. The fact is, most web forums rely on users uploading images from outside hosting sites. Check out any photography forum - everyone posts images hosted from their own Flickr, ImageShack, Photobucket, Picasa, SmugMug etc. accounts. That, combined with Facebook and users own website links, it's simply not feasible for a forum to try and provide the sort of bandwidth required to host their own large format imagery.

e Picasa for image storage if you have fears of closure. Pretty sure Google's website stability and lifecycle is the majority of hosts available, in my opinion since publicly traded they're about as stable as Coke or IBM with backing.

Nice shot Joe! Having just recently taken up photography again with acquiring a new DSLR, I've also discovered it's no coincidence how people in the design/architecture field also do quite well at photography. Having "an eye" for detail serves well in both mediums.
