STREAMLINED
RECYCLING

The Shamong Sun
Separating recyclables will be a prac-
tice of the past for Burlington County
residents starting next May with the
implementation of streamlined recy-
cling.
The county boasts single-stream as
convenient and a way to increase recy-
cling volume as well as save money.
According to the county, studies
show single-stream brings with it an in-
crease of 10 percent or more in recy-
cling. The more people recycle, the less
waste there is in landfills. Last year, re-
cycling saved the towns more than $3.2
million in landfill tipping fees. Those
cost-savings are effectively tax savings,
since they improve the bottom line of
municipal budgets. Last year, Shamong
recycled 795 tons, saving $58,607 in land-
fill fees.
Our community has been good
about recycling, and with this new sys-
tem, we think that will continue and
improve. Being able to use one bin for
all recyclables makes it even easier for
our residents to recycle township ad-

ministrator Sue Onorato said.
Other townships within the county pur-
chased big blue carts, which residents
currently use for cardboard and paper and
will soon as an all-purpose recycling tool.
Shamong Township, however, felt that it
would not see the benefits of spending
$60,000 for the new recycling carts.
The county was offering a 50-50 match
on the purchase of new carts so we would
still have had to put out $60,000 for new re-
cycling bins, Onorato said at last weeks
township committee meeting. Our trash
hauler at the time could not guarantee that
our residents would see the savings of the
single-stream system.
Currently, the county is working to find
out whether residents are in need of the
signature blue cart, or a second cart to sup-
plement the amount of recyclables put to
the curb each week. Although Shamong
residents will not have the blue cart, their
collection service will not be impacted.
Residents will still be able to put paper
along with bottles and cans into the exist-
ing yellow bins that they have currently,
Onorato said. Well still be a part of the
single-stream system without having to
purchase new bins for the entire town-
ship.
The county assured residents that the
program is free of charge and the frequen-
cy of service will not change. Shamong
will still provide a drop-off center for resi-
dents who have recyclables between pick-
ups.
Currently, major facility modifications
are being made to the Robert C. Shinn Re-
cycling Center in Westampton. Following
that, new single-stream sorting equipment
will be installed, according to the county.

T
welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.
We will never forget
Twelve years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

The Shamong Sun
Concerns over a mud run and
camping event taking place in
Shamong on Sept. 28 were raised
at the township committee meet-
ing on Sept. 3.
The event, called Rebel Race
is scheduled to take place in the
residential area of Saddlebrook
Court on the property of Charles
and Gail Pratt who own and oper-
ate the Saddlebrook Ridge Eques-
trian Center. Rebel Race is a 5k
and 15k obstacle race designed for
athletes and thrill seekers. From
start to finish, runners will be
barricade climbing, mud crawl-
ing, rope swinging and fire jump-
ing.
Jacquelyn Dougherty, who
lives nearby on Breckenridge
Drive, brought her concerns to
the committee after seeing the
event advertised on www.rebel-
race.com. Dougherty said the pic-
tures of scantily clad women cov-
ered in mud and men drinking
beer do not reflect the types of
events Shamong is known or
should be known for.
Gail Pratt defended the event
and their reason for hosting.
I apologize for the way the
event has been advertised, but we
have done the work to make sure
no one will be impacted. The reg-
istration, parking and camping
area will be on the other side of
the property, so Im certain the
neighbors will not even notice,
Pratt said.
As far as the depictions of
drinking and potential reckless
partying, Pratt said it is wrong to
think they would allow things to
get out of control.
We have a beautiful property
and a magnificent facility. To
think we would allow it to be den-
igrated or damaged is crazy. The
event is totally organized, Pratt
said.
The proceeds from the event
will be donated to the Wounded
Warrior Project.
Were not making a bail of
hay from this event. We want to
have it so that we can support
something as patriotic as Wound-
ed Warrior, Pratt said.
The committee scheduled a
special meeting for Tuesday, Sept.
10 to allow residents to voice their
concerns about potential traffic
and safety issues. No official ac-
tion was taken at last weeks
meeting, but the committee want-
ed the public to have the opportu-
nity to learn more about the
event.
Charles Pratt was concise in
his remarks as he exited the meet-
ing.
Were going to have the event,
and by law, there isnt anything
you can do to stop us, Pratt said.
In other news:
Jack Dougherty, an eighth-
grade student at Indian Mills Me-
morial School, presented the com-
mittee a check for $236. The
money was left over from
Doughertys fundraising efforts
to update the veterans memorial
on Indian Mills Road. In June,
new plaques were added in addi-
tion to shrubbery and flowers
being planted at the memorial.
The check was placed in a newly
created war memorial fund that
will be used exclusively for main-
taining Shamongs memorial.
Deputy mayor Ken Long and the
rest of the committee thanked
Dougherty for his service and
generosity.
Committeeman Tim Gimbel
was named the committee repre-
sentative to the Shamong Town-
ship Recreation Advisory Com-
mittee.
The township was forced to
spend $2,100 to replace and re-
paint signs that were damaged by
graffiti. Other property that was
damaged was a shed and fencing
at Stony Creek Park. The commit-
tee will pursue having those be
repaired through community
service projects.
The bids to replace the carpet
and furniture at the municipal of-
fice came in at $3,147 and $3,837,
respectively. Township Adminis-
trator Sue Onorato said that cer-
tain items would be purchased
used from Office Furniture Out-
let in Cherry Hill to lower costs.
The budget for the project was not
to exceed $10,000.
