My23yearoldsonisservingan18monthsentence.Attheageof15,Xrequiredabacksurgery.He wasgivenaprescriptionofopiatesforpain.Thisbegananaddictionthateventuallyledtoheroin.Itis epidemicinourNorthScottsdaleneighborhoodandwaswidelyusedathishighschool.Theseare greatkidsfromlovingfamiliesthathadnoideaofthepoweranddestructionheroinwouldtakeontheir younglives.Despitecounselingandrehabmysonwasnotabletocontrolhisaddictionandendedup inprisonasaresult.Hehadnohistoryofcriminalbehaviorandnohistoryofviolence.

Mysonwasunderthecareofbothmedicaldoctorsandatherapistthatallwrotelettersonhisbehalf tothejudgeatsentencing.ThejudgedeterminedthatXwasaperfectcandidateforMaranaPrison whichspecializesininmateswithaddictions.SherecommendedthisprisontotheDepartmentof Correctionsaspartofhissentencingandgavehimtheleastamountoftimeallowabletoherbylaw. TheAZDOCdidnothonorthejudgesrecommendationandsentmysontoYuma.Shortlyafterhe wastransferredtoSafford.Therehewasattackedbyanotherinmateresultinginabrainhemorrhage. ThisisveryseriousasXhadtwopreviousbrainbleedspriortoincarcerationasaresultofan automobileaccident.Thedoctorswarnedusthatanotherheadtraumacaneasilyresultindeath. Theprisonthenreclassifiedhimandincreasedhiscustodylevel.Xshouldneverhavebeenplacedon ayardwithmenservinglifesentencesformurderandotherviolentcrimes.Hedoesnotbelongthere. Hehasnohistoryofviolence.Xdefendedhimselfwhenattackedandwaswarnedtonotsnitchon theotherinmate.Asyouknow,thepenaltyforbeinglabeledasnitchisseriousbeatingsandoften timesdeath. HewasthenmovedtoTucson'sCimarronyard.Thisyardisrunbyracialgangsanddrugsare rampant.Xjustwantedtodohistimewithoutaddedtrouble.Thegangsarerelentlessandthey terrorizetheseyoungmenandmakeitimpossibletonotcomply.Afterbeingthreatenedmanytimes heaskedthatIcontacthisCO4tobecalledintohisoffice.Theinmatescannotgodirectforhelpas theyhavetohaveanotherinmatewiththemtoavoidsnitching.Anotherridiculousruleontheyards governedbytheinmates. IwasabletocontactCO4XXwhodidcallXinandmovedhimintothedetentionunit.Bythetime theygotbacktohiscellallofhisbelongingshadbeenstolenhisCDplayer,CD's,clothingeven hisshoes.AllthatwasleftwashisTVasthisiseasilytracedwiththeIDnumber. Hecontinuestobeinthedetentionunitandislockeddown24hoursaday.Hisrequestforprotective segregationisunderreviewbuthehasbeentoldofftherecordbytheguardsthatitwillbedenied. Theinmateshavecellphonesgivingthemtheabilitytoreachyardsstatewideandexecuteorders againstinmates.Beforehearrivesonanewyardthewordwillhavereachedthegangleadersandthe greenlightwillbegivenforviolence.

IhavegivenuphopethattheAZDOCcanoffermysonanyguidance,counseling,educationor addictiontherapy.However,IdoexpecttheAZDOCtokeepmysonsafe.Iexpecthimtobeableto finishhissentencewithoutbeingphysicallyharmedorforcedtodealwiththedrugsthatareabundant inyourprisons.
