EE 4721 Introduction to Power System Analysis Fall 2013 Homework 8 Due Wednesday (in class) Nov 6, 2013

Problem 1. Consider the simplified electric power system shown in the figure below for which the power flow solution can be obtained without resorting to iterative techniques. (a) Compute the elements of the bus admittance matrix Ybus . (b) Calculate the phase angle 2 by using the real power equation at bus 2 (voltagecontrolled bus). (c) Determine |V3 | and 3 by using both the real and reactive power equations at bus 3 (load bus). (d) Find the real power generated at bus 1 (swing bus). (e) Evaluate the total real power losses in the system.
V1 = 10 P2 = 1.6 p. u. |V2 | = 1.1 p. u.

= 2 j4

Y = 3 j6

P3 = 2 p. u. Q 3 = +1 p. u.

Problem 2. The figure below shows a single-line diagram of a three-bus power system. Power flow input data are given in the table 1 and table 2 given below. (a) Determine the 3 3 per-unit bus admittance matrix Ybus . (b) For each bus k = 1,2,3, determine which of the variables Vk , , , and Qk are input data and which are unknowns. (c) Write down the power flow equations (Do not solve) for the three bus system below.

Problem 3. For the power system given in the problem 2, 1) Identify the three unknown variables, and write down the three power flow equations and the update equations to be solved by the Newton-Raphson method (including clearly the Jacobian matrix). Do not solve the equations. 2) How would the NR update equations change if you were using : - Decoupled power flow, - Fast decoupled power flow, - DC power flow. Mention what approximations are used in each approach.
