GeneraI Information
Scientific Devices Turbine Flow M eters are h aving only
one moving part, a preci se helical roto r. Rotation of the
rotor i s ele ctronically det ected and p rocessed. Hi gh-
quality V- jewel be arings provide lon g wear life in non-
lubricating fluids. The entire rotor assembly can be easily
taken out of the meter for field service.
Turbine flow meter body and rotor chambers are
fabricated fro m stai nless steel tu bing. Turbine rotor i s
made from AS410/430 stainless steel.
Field mounted electronics are mounted on the meter to
display flow rate, total (resettable) and provide a
programmable pulse output. The same unit,
in a wall mount or panel mount housing, can be located
up to 2,000 f eet away. t is not ne cessary to have any
processing el ectronics on the meter itself unle ss lo cal
reading is d esired. Other electronics options (whi ch can
again be meter o r remot e mou nted) are th e 4 -20 mA
transmitter, Flow rate indicator, Totalizer and Batcher.

Installat ion
Piping Conditions : n general , the standard
practice of i nstalling the meter with ten diameters of
straight pipe upstream and five downstream are
recommended. However, it is possible under some
circumstance to op erate with le ss, particularly if the
meter is equipped with an optional internal flow
straightener. (See diagram above.)
Flanges : Standard matching flanges and either partial
or full-face gasket s can be used. Whe n nstalling ,
tighten the b olts evenly, and u se care to preven t a
misaligned gasket from entering the flow stream.
Position : These Tu rbine flow meters are all-p osition
meters, and can be operated in a vertical or h orizontal
position, and with the meter insert in any radial position.
A horizontal insert position is preferred if there is a risk of
air becoming trapped due to constant low flows.
Operating the meter i n partia lly-filled pipe will result in
inaccuracies.
Connections : Turbine meters require electrical
connections. See the co nnections di agram for th e one
relevant to your meter.
Operation
For operating instructions for the various electronic
modules, consult th e ma nual fo r the specific module.
This should be included with the meter when purchased.

Mainte nance and Repair
Recalibration : f it is necess ary to recalibrate the
meter for an y purpo se, this can be done by an y
Scientific Devices authori zed facility. Call the fact ory
for information.
1urbine Insert Remo val and Installation : n
order to repair any mechanical parts (rotor or shafts) it
is necessary to remove the Rotor chamber. To do this,
first
remove the Turbine Flow Meter from the line. Then
remove the circlip which hold the rotor chamber in place.
Takeout the rotor chamber from the main body.
Rotor and Shaft Replacement : Examine the rotor
to determine if bearings or shaft are damaged or
excessively worn. Th e r otor should spin sm oothly an d
freely with no visibl e wobble. Back and forth play should
be very minor, less than 1/64. f it is nece ssary to replace
the rotor or shafts, first loosen the rotor holding screw with
a screw-driv er. The rotor will com e free as soon as the
shaft ends come free of the rotor bearings. Reverse the
procedure to rei nstall, ta king care to maintai n a sm all
amount of free pl ay bet ween the shaft end s and the
bearings.
Sensor Replacement : This procedure is rarely
necessary. However, certain electrical conditions can
damage the sensor. To replace it, first remove any
electronics module in the aluminum el ectronics housing.
Disconnect the sensor leads from terminals on the back of
the board. Unscre w the sensor retai ning scre w ca refully
and then remove the se nsor by tugg ing gently o n the
sensor leads.
Electronic Module Repair : None of the elect ronics
modules have replaceable components. Printed circuit
boards mu st be repla ced as complete units. n o rder to
replace an e lectronic mo dule, lo osen the th ree scre ws
which fa sten each u nit. Once the screws a re lo ose, the
unit will lift free from the insert housing.
