1. Why did you decide to choose this book? The reason why I choose this book is because after reading the back cover of this book, the author, F. W. De Klerk self said that he had not good relationship with Nelson Mandela for disappearing the apartheid which was occurring in South Africa. As we know that Nelson Mandela is one of the most influencing people in the world, even when he died, everyone in this world felt loss, but I want to know what the detail why he had done cold war with Mandela while everyone likes him. 2. How was the story or the plot presented in the book? Explain. This book is divided into 35 chapters, the author start the book with the introduction which tells about the over view about chapters that will be discussed in those 35 chapters. And ended with conclusion which sum up the author opinions. Overall those chapters are about all things which related with his political, like in chapter The Election and the End of Nation Party Rule, the Government of National Unity, and the rest is about his efforts how to get free South Africa from the apartheid like in chapter The Record of Understanding and the Multiparty Negotiation Forum, Arom Bombs and Assassination. And two first chapters are about his childhood, education, family. 3. What are your personal experiences or thoughts related the book? The personal experience related this book is like in chapter 27, in the Nobel Peace Prize, at that time Nelson Mandela and F. W. De Klerk invited to receive that prize, and they both asked for giving a speech, when Mandela gave his speech, it seemed referred to De Klerk, his speech was too provoked until some people shouted him De Klerk, go home!. I think its condition commonly felt by some people like me, you are abashed in public. When I was Elementary School student, I had classmate her name is Emil, she always become first rank in our class except in third grade, at that time our score was same, 89, and because my first letters name is D while she is Y, of course in class ascension announcement, my name mentioned first, in fact, she reported it to her dad, said that I always cheating to her when I became her deskmate, but Im swear, I never cheated to her, while she always influenced me for changing my correct answer, because at that time I was so plain face her whose age older than me. I knew that from my mom, she told by my third grade teacher when carried me to school, he said that At that time Emils dad (Yaumil A.) came to my house, he asked me for moving Pipit (Dewi N.) in order not in one desk again because she always cheating, but in fact, now in fourth grade she became second rank, OMG! I felt so
betrayed, while I always regard her as my sister. Yup, thats right for not too believe human, because human is human. 4. What did you like the best from this book? Part which I like from this book is even though de Klerk and Mandela had not good relationship, but they still could hold that feeling until they both could bring democracy in South Africa and delete the apartheid in there. I think its very rare people doing like that, commonly people who have bad relationship surely their cooperation is not good too. But its different with Mandela and de Klerks stor y who still got the Prize Price Nobel for their country. 5. What did you like least? What I dont like from this book is it is so anti-Mandela and pro-De Klerk. Mandala's role in the making of the new South Africa is marginalized and De Klerk's role is accentuated. Maybe because this book is written by himself, so thats why this book seems always make good De Klerk. I think even though this book is kind of autobiography, but the author should do neutral, and tell the truth. Honestly I little bit dont believe that Mandela is like what de Klerk said that he always hate him, while De Klerk was always patient to face him. 6. What are the larger issues dealt with or raised by the story? The larger issue which arouse in this autobiography is about story of the man who released Nelson Mandela from imprisonment in 1990 and set in motion a chain of events which led to the first fully democratic elections in South African history and also sacrificed his own power and prestige to make freedom possible. 7. What you can learn from the story? Many things that I got, one of them is I just knew that if you want to get your success, you have to hold your ego, try always positive thinking, like De Klerk do, even though he had felt that Mandela doesnt like him in very long time, but he held it in order they dont do disturbance, while they have same mission for bring the democracy, and that mission should be reached, and nothing could stop it including their ego. 8. What kind of people need to read this book? Why? I think this book is vey great for people who want to understand how the transition in South Africa happened from apartheid to democracy, because in this book very clear told about how big effort that De Klerk and Mandela did for making South Africa was free from different racism, what solutions which they created for solving those problem until they both got the Nobel Prize. 9. On a scale of 1-10, how difficult was this book for you? For me this book is on scale 6 because I think some vocabulary used which related all things in political which was I seldom met, maybe because I dont have any political background before. So I must open the dictionary for finding the meaning of those new vocabularies for many times. And so thats why I gave it on scale 6.
