The title page shows FACCs new key visual. This out-of-the-ordinary combination of elements and their precise interaction symbolize that FACC has the right solution for any challenging task, however unusual it may be.

This attitude of expectation is also applied to our own self-image, our corporate culture. The strong growth and here I would like to point out the pleasing 31% increase in turnover in the last nancial year has led to a large increase in employees, both nationally and internationally. Over 2000 employees from 35 nations work at the various locations in Austria and abroad. Together in a strong team they have achieved numerous successes, from production start-up of the various projects on the aircraft programs of Boeing 787 and Airbus A380, and record gures in development performance, to rst delivery of important components for the A350 XWB. Now there are new major orders from our global customers to be dealt with. Global action across borders and cultures is required. Particularly in such an international environment, I consider it all the more important that every employee speaks the FACC language. The motto Extend Your Expectations is intended to be a powerful and permanent reminder to each and every employee at FACC of their obligation to full the expectations placed upon them. Working in the aviation industry means always

accepting responsibility, recognising performance and success, making decisions quickly and on your own initiative. What unites us is our commitment to actively and passionately seek the best solutions and be a reliable partner for our customers. Its chocks away for the aviation industry. Nevertheless we must not ignore the changes in our environment. The political and economic framework conditions are not getting any easier, which in the end will also affect air travel, including our customers and our FACC. Airbus A350 XWB


FACC Winglets and Spoilers: green light for production.
With its A350 XWB Airbus places a modern next generation long-range aircraft on the market. And on board are FACC components from all three divisions. FACC Engines & Nacelles is supplying weight-optimised translating sleeves and engine components; FACC Interiors provides passenger door lining, smoke detection covers and overhead stowage compartments. And the spoilers and winglets are provided by FACC Aerostructures. Here it is: green light for production

FACC European Support Partner: In the global world of aircraft manufacturers and of FACCs customers, sales market oriented thinking is essential. FACC is to manufacture sets for 150 aircraft in its plant in Austria. As European Support Partner of Airbus, FACC will parallel to the manufacture in Austria accompany the industrialization and the production ramp-up of the spoilers at an Asian Airbus supplier and thus support Airbus in the fulllment of its offset obligations in this important growth region. Airbus thereby gets the guarantee of an uninterrupted manufacturing process as well as of a fully industrialised product in line with the high FACC standards.

Weight reduction challenge: Lightness is the top priority. The FACC engineering specialists in cooperation with the Airbus team managed to reduce the weight significantly over the course of the development process, thus making a major contribution towards increasing efficiency and saving on fuel for the aircraft. The coordination challenge: At peak times over 100 engineering experts were working on the project at several locations across Europe. In addition to the FACC engineering centres in Austria and Bratislava, an FACC development team was also deployed on site at Airbus in Filton/UK. FACC proved impressively that the efcient completion of even extensive work projects spanning numerous locations and companies is well within its capabilities. The Europe-wide dimension of the project is also demonstrated by the delivery logistics. The butt strips go to Broughton/UK. The wings will then be further processed in Germanys Bremen plant; here the wingtips will join them before the winglets are mounted in Toulouse in France. For FACC as a seasoned delivery partner of Airbus, this is no problem.

Winglets
With this life-of-program contract, FACC is demonstrating its competence as a Tier-1 supplier for the next generation of Airbus long-haul aircraft. Under the contract, FACC is responsible for the development, qualication including testing, the design and manufacture of the production tools as well as production and assembly of the individual components to create a system ready-to-install.

Spoiler
Delivery of the spoilers is in the nal stages of start-up. As a Tier-1 supplier, FACC has provided support for the development and ensured industrialisation from construction of the tools to manufacture of the spoilers. The collaboration with Airbus in the course of the development, qualification and production start-up was as expected very good, concluded Andreas Furthmayr, Vice President Division Aerostructures. Constructive collaboration: In terms of development, FACC was able to contribute its expertise in the eld of Airbus longhaul aircraft, especially as the company was also responsible for the spoilers for the A330 und A340. Originally the same construction principle was intended. In cooperation with Airbus it was possible to reduce the complexity of the RTM (= Resin Transfer Moulding) component in line with the special requirements. A combination of integrated composite and aluminium ttings proved the most efcient solution. Qualied cooperation: Another challenge was certication. The ofcial requirements for approval of long-haul aircraft and their components become more stringent with each aircraft generation. FACC satised the complex certication process according to the latest requirements without massive impact on the schedule.

Full scale tests challenge: The constant expansion of the performance portfolio is part of FACC corporate strategy. So for the rst time on parts of this size the largest component measures six metres - full scale tests are being carried out at FACC. This involves subjecting the complete winglet system to static and dynamic testing for resilience, fatigue and endurance, up to mechanical failure.

New order:

Airbus A321 Outer Flaps


Stade (Composite parts) and Bremen (Assembly). Higher production rates due to increased demand for this type of aircraft and the associated capacity considerations at Airbus (make or buy analysis) were the triggers for the transfer. This order is of particular significance for FACC and enables the composite specialist to apply its long years of experience to the design, development and production of wing components for the models of the Airbus A320 family. The contract provides for deliveries over a period of several years. Automated Laying: With this order, FACC is also taking another step forward in production technology and is introducing automated laying in component production. With advanced tape laying the individual composite layers for the flap components are layered flat and automatically. The parts are then formed over a warmed stamp into the relevant geometry, e.g. u-shape. This hot forming process saves the tedious manual draping of layers and precision and efciency are further increased.

For one A350 XWB FACC supplies 16 different spoiler components - 14 spoilers, 2 droop panels

On the Wings of Partnership
Guests from all over the world joined FACC on July 6 to celebrate the success of its long-term partnerships. Spirits were justifiably high in the unique setting of Salzburgs Hangar-7.
There was a festive mood at the FACC Wing Talk event in Red Bull Hangar-7. Music to the ears was provided by the string quartets rendering of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. FACC CEO Walter A. Stephan thanked Provincial Minister Viktor Sigl (left) for the years of support.

In the spotlight were the winglets for the new Airbus A350 XWB. Together with Airbus, FACC AG celebrated the milestone of starting the production of the rst components. Other stars of the event were new technologies and products which FACC has developed in cooperation with its customers: the weight-optimised spoiler for the Boeing 787 and A350 XWB as well as the innovative fuel-saving blended winglets for the Boeing 737. Many of the 200 honoured guests had travelled a long way to attend. But the guests included not only representatives of international customers, suppliers and business partners of FACC but also numerous representatives of Austrian politics and economy. In his welcoming speech, Walter A. Stephan, CEO of FACC AG, stressed the excellent collaboration with the valued business partners and the outstanding performance of his company. Words of praise for

the FACC team also came from customer Airbus, as Klaus Richter, Executive Vice President Procurement, offered his congratulations on an important milestone in the A350 XWB winglet project. Boeing representative Cliff Hall illuminated in his speech the joint success in the 787 aircraft program. Viktor Sigl, Provincial Minister of Upper Austria, appeared to represent the regional government of Upper Austria and expressed his admiration for the intense, pioneering research activities of FACC as a globally active aviation industry supplier and stressed FACCs signicant contribution to the economic and research location of Upper Austria and future-oriented jobs in the region.

In the recent past, FACC successfully prepared, executed, and completed two certifications. The quality certification guarantees documented safety to customers; the environmental certification constitutes another of FACCs contributions toward clean skies.
Both certication procedures were carried out in cooperation with Quality Austria. The aviation-specic industry standard based on EN9100:2008 may in fact be the strictest of all market sectors worldwide. It forms an integral part of any contract with customers, and compliance with it is mandatory for FACC. This documented safety constitutes one of the key factors that help ensure long-term customer satisfaction and is consistent with FACCs funda-

Environmental management system to ISO 14.001


In order to clearly document FACCs and its staffs expertise and sense of responsibility regarding environmental protection also to the general public, FACC implemented, for the rst time in company history, an environmental management system to the ISO 14.001 standard. In accordance with its motto A Clean Way To The Sky, FACC hereby demonstrates that its lightweight products are made according to environmentally compatible and safe manufacturing methods and help ensure that, despite a marked increase in air trafc, aviation-

induced emissions remain at a constant level. No other industry can make such a claim! At FACC, environmental responsibility and the health of its workforce are considered as paramount priorities. The frugal use of resources from raw materials to electric power, water, or heat constitutes another important cornerstone of its policies. An essential part of both certications is the commitment made by the Executive Board, on behalf of the entire organization and all of its staff members, to comply with the high standards and continue to improve on them to the extent that is technically feasible.

FACC Technical Colloquium Advances in Composites


In advance of the FACC event Wing Talk on 5/6 July the fth FACC Technical Colloquium was held in Salzburg on the subject of Advances in Composites. The 70 participants had the chance to attend very interesting presentations from 15 speakers. After an introductory address on the first day by Johannes Noisternig (Vice President of Engineering Solutions, FACC AG), the first presentation was a comprehensive overview of composite material production strategies in the aviation industry. This was followed by presentations on production methods and material characterisation by research partners of FACC AG (University of Leoben, University of Rapperswil) and industry companies (Cytec, Eurocopter). The second day was opened by Walter Stephan (CEO FACC AG) and concentrated on the topic of simulation in the areas of structure mechanics and manufacturing, presented by the Munich-based Chair of Carbon Composites, the JKU Linz und the Polymer Competence Center Leoben also research partners of FACC AG. There were also representatives from the Universities Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern. The event was rounded off by a report on perspectives for the future in the aviation industry. Rolls-Royce:
A high-ranking delegation from Rolls-Royce visited FACC at the beginning of July: in the course of their European tour, supply chain executives from the engine manufacturer visited selected main suppliers including FACC - to check the status of their collaboration and define strategy goals for the future.
The agenda included discussion on all aspects of the collaboration with FACC on the various engine programmes, possibilities to extend the cooperation and new technologies. FACC presented their latest research activities in the eld of

complex modules and primary structures which would be very well suited to application in engines of the next generation. The key technologies here are moving towards a higher degree of composites in aero engines which should further improve the safety, weight, efciency and performance level of the engines. To round off their visit the delegation visited the individual plants and were impressed by the advanced bre-reinforced technology and the extensive development and manufacturing competences of FACC.

Take off: The winglets and spoilers contract for the C919 is not your first joint project with COMAC? Brunner: Thats right! Before becoming director of Aerostructures programs, I was business development manager at FACC Interiors for almost two and a half years. In this function, I accompanied a large-scale project in cooperation with our Chinese customer. Take off: What were your impressions regarding the cooperation, but also with respect to differences in languages and cultures? Brunner: There are definitely differences, but we have long learned to deal with them. In the course of the project management, we had an intensive exchange with the engineers from COMAC, both at FACC in Austria as well as on-site. Building on this longstanding cooperation, we are far ahead in terms of experience. Take off: Experience and expertise which might also be of interest to other aircraft manufacturers? Brunner: Absolutely! From Engines & Nacelles to Interiors and Aerostructures: we, like no other aeronautical supplier, combine aircraft and production expertise with China-specific competency. This way, we are able to reliably assist Western aircraft manufacturers with offset obligations in this growth market. Take off: How often do you personally visit COMAC in Shanghai? Brunner: Every two to three months.

Among Western companies, FACC has a pilot function when it comes to experience in and cooperation with China. We asked Roland Brunner, Director of Aerostructures programs at FACC.

Whether in business, space travel, or sports: the Middle Kingdom is on its way to the top. Accordingly, in the next twenty years, China will also be needing more than 4,000 passenger aircraft to meet its aviation demand. The COMAC C919 is already the second passenger aircraft to be developed and built entirely in China. And it is already the second time that FACC is on board.
This classically dimensioned (length approx. 38 m, wingspan approx. 35 m) twin-engine medium-haul aircraft will seat from 156 to 190 passengers, depending on the respective conguration. FACC has maintained a long-standing cooperation with the manufacturer of the C919. After all, FACC also developed and industrialized the interior for the ARJ21 the rst-ever Chinese passenger aircraft.

Project progressing rapidly


In spring 2010, FACC received COMACs inquiry. Based on a memorandum of understanding, the co-location phase was kicked off in July 2011. Since then, specialists from FACC have been on site in Shanghai on a continuous basis. June 20, 2012, marked the ofcial signing of the contract. Currently, the project is in its so-called joint denition phase during which the interfaces to the partly global manufacturers and producers of adjacent components (wing structure, hydraulics, actuators, etc.) are ne-tuned. The delivery of the rst components has been scheduled for early 2013. By securing another order from Chinas

In 2010, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) presented a first prototype model at the aeronautics expo in Zhuhai. The C in the type designation stands for China, while also implying equal standing with major aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing (A B C). The rst 9 suggests eternity in Chinese culture, while 19(0) refers to the proposed maximum number of passengers.

FACC builds Technology Center


With its new technology center that is being built at St. Martin/ Innkreis, Upper Austria, FACC secures its growth strategy for the long term. The new technology center will be the hub of our global R&D activities, explains Walter A. Stephan, CEO at FACC AG. For one weekend in July, the sky over Austrias Lake Wolfgang will become the backdrop for historic aircraft to show off their breathtaking stunts: within an incredibly short time the scalaria air challenge has developed from an insider tip to an established event in the European aviation calendar.

500 future-oriented jobs:


On the occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony, Viktor Sigl, Minister of Economic Affairs for the province of Upper Austria, emphasized that FACCs investment generates strong impulses for Upper Austria as a business and research location. The Technology Center, as well as an adjoining cutting-edge Engineering Test Center, will be built on a 50,500 m2 plot of land that borders on the existing sites Plant 2 and Plant 3. The two buildings, with construction costs budgeted at 22 million, are part of FACCs investment program for R&D with total funds of 54 million. It may seem surprising at rst that an idyllic mountainous region of all places should play host to a meeting of pilots and aircraft which one would rather expect to see in a coastal location or on the open sea. At Lake Wolfgang in Austria, better known for its fairytale mountain backdrop of the Salzkammergut, seaplanes from all over the world are coming together for the seventh time this year for the scalaria air challenge. But in fact this isnt something entirely new here: aircraft have been landing on Lake Wolfgang since 1924. The company sterreichische Luftverkehrs AG, a predecessor of Austrian Airlines, rst ew regular ights between Vienna and St Wolfgang with a Junkers F-13 W on oats. This was an extremely expensive undertaking at the time and really only for the very rich.
