Explain with a neat sketch the principle operation of a Turbofan engine and state its advantages and disadvantages. 2. Describe the working of a scram jet engine with neat sketches. 3. Briefly explain the following (a) Turbo propeller engines (b) Aircraft combustors. 4. A turboprop engine operates at an altitude of 3000 meters above mean sea level and an aircraft speed of 525 Kmph. The data for the engine is given below; Inlet diffuser efficiency =0.875, Compressor efficiency =0.790, Velocity of air at compressor entry =90m/s, Properties of air: =1.4, Cp =1.005 KJ/kg K. From the above data calculate (i) pressure rise through the inlet diffuser (ii) pressure ratio developed by the compressor (iii) power required by the compressor per unit flow rate of air and (iv) the air standard efficiency of the engine. 5. The diameter of the propeller of an aircraft is 2.5m; it flies at a speed of 500Kmph at an altitude of 8000m. For a flight to jet speed ratio of 0.75 determine (a) the flow rate of air through the propeller, (b) thrust produced (c) specific thrust, (d) specific impulse and (e) the thrust power. 6. Derive the following relations stating the assumptions used: (a) h0=h+1/2c2, (b)p0=p+1/2c2 (c)a02=( -1)h0 (d)T0/T=1+( -1)/2 M2. 7. The jet of a gas at 593K (=1.3, R=469J/KgK) has a mach number of 1.2.Determine for local and stagnation conditions velocity of sound and enthalpy. What is the maximum attainable velocity of this jet? 8. The conditions of air stream at entry to a duct are p1=1 bar, T1=300K, M1=1.3, If the mach number at exit of the duct is 0.6 determine for adiabatic flow the temperature and velocity of air at the duct exit.
