UIA REGION II IN BELGRADE


The Serbian Union of Architects (UAS) hosted the member section presidents from UIA Region II in a meeting on 25 & 26 April in Belgrade. In parallel, they organised a conference on Balkan architecture and its pertinency in which the officers from national professional associations met with other architects for a practical dialogue on exchanges and professional confrontations in this region where Asian and Eurorean civilisations meet. An exhibition on Balkan architecture opened on the day after the UIA Region II meetings. It was a deomonstration of architectures strong points and potential despite these times of austerity and economic crisis. Deniz Incedayi chaired the regional meeting. UIA President Albert Dubler, Secretary General Michel Barmaki, and Region I vice-president Antonio Riverso also attended these events.

MEXICO

PEDRO RAMREZ VZQUEZ IN MEMORIAM


Mexican architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez passed away on 16 April 2013, in Mexico City, where he was born in 1919. He authored such emblematic buildings as the Mexican Anthropology Museum in 1963, and the Lausanne Olympic Museum in 1993. He also left his mark in the UIA as president of the organising committee for the 1978 congress in Mexico City, UIA vice-president from 1978-1981, and winner of the 1969 Jean Tschumi prize. As head of the government agency for educational facilities he created a model for rural schools that was mass produced in 35 000 units and received the grand prize at the Milan Triennial in 1960. During a career that a spanned nearly half a century he realised the medical school at Mexicos national university, the Labour Ministry and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, markets, pavilions for international exhibitions, Azteca stadium and the Notre Dame de Guadalupe basilica, often in collaboration with other architects, including Kenzo Tange and Manuel Rosen for the Japanese embassy in Mexico City. Pedro Ramirez Vazquez served as Minister of Public Works and Human Settlements under President Jos Lpez Portillo, he was president of the Olympic committee for the Mexico City Games (1968), and founder and rector of the Mexico City Autonomous Metropolitan University. He received the French Academie dArchitectures Grand Gold Medal.

VINESH CHINTARAM AAM PRESIDENT


Vinesh Chintaram was elected president of the Mauritius Association of Architects for the period 2013-2014, succeeding Sylvie de Leuse. Vinesh Chintram is in private practice in the young and dynamic studio he opened in Mauritius in 2008. He obtained his architecture degree in France, and engineering and urban planning degrees in Germany, where he received the BDA prize for best diploma. Committed to sustainable development and responsible architecture, he is engaged in the fight against poverty through his practice, and has developed eKo LaKaz, an affordable housing concept for Mauritius and other African countries. The Australian Institute of Architects will hold its next annual conference in Melbourne from 30 May to 1st June 2013, on the theme Materials. Going beyond preconceived ideas and technical specifications about materials and materialism is the challenge posed by this event that will look at new perspectives and applications to demonstrate the constant regeneration of materials and techniques that form architecture. UIA BUREAU IN DENVER


The American Institute of Architects (AIA) will host the UIA Bureau members for a meeting in Denver, on 18 & 19 June 2013, just before the AIA annual convention (20-22 June). JAPAN

PRIZE JAPAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS


The Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) selected one hundred architectural works to be published in a catalogue to promote architecture and its members to the public. JIA also awarded a series of prizes including its Grand Prize to Hirookazu Tuki for his Bamboo Ark. Three prizes were awarded respectively to Chiaki Arai for the Kadare cultural centre in Yurihonjyo; to Hiroshi Horiba and Kazumi Kudo for Kanazawa Umimirai library; and to Makoto Watanabe, Yoko Kinoshita and Masato Araya for the Makabe Densho-kan cultural centre. The first prize for sustainable architecture was attributed to Hiroshi Nakamura for the Roku Museum in Oyama City. Takeshi Hosaka and Keisuke Maeda both received a young architects prize. WAWERU GATHECHA AAK PRESIDENT


Waweru Gathecha was elected president of the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK). A graduate of the University of Nottingham, and Montfort University in Leicester, he is active in the Eastern Africa Institute of Architects and in private practice in Nairobi with the studio Waweru and Associates. ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2013


The German Architecture Prize for 2013 was awarded to the Stuttgart based studio Lederer Ragnarsdttir Oei for the Ravensburg Art Museum, the worlds first passive museum. This prize has been discerned annually since 1971 by the German Federal Chamber of Architects (BAK), and the federal Minister of Transportation. FRANCE

YOUNG ARCHITECTS FORUM IN KOSICE


Thirty teams representing 18 countries were selected to take part in the young architects forum that will take place on 15 26 July in Kosice, Slovakia. Over twelve days the participants, all young architects, urban planners and landscape architects, will exchange ideas with the facilitators and speakers to develop propositions allowing the city to reappropriate the spaces along the Hornad river banks in Kosice. The participating countries are: Andorra, Brazil, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, New Zealand, Pakistan, Palestine, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Slovakia. This forum is organised by the city of Kosice, the Slovak Association of Architects, the World Federation of Young Architects (FMJA) and the International Council of French Architects (CIAF). President Albert Dubler will represent UIA at the forums inauguration ceremony, and UIA Secretary General Michel Barmaki will represent the Union on the jury. ARCTIC ADAPTATIONS WILL REPRESENT CANADA IN VENICE


The Canadian Council for the Arts and Architecture Canada / IRAC announced that the Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15 project was selected to represent Canada at the 2014 edition of the Venice Architecture Biennial. Arctic Adaptations will present innovative architectural projects inspired by the Nunavut culture, territory and climate and that reflect local traditions of migration, mobility and seasonality. ARCHITECTURE AND CHILDREN

NEW EDITION OF THE UIA GOLDEN CUBE AWARDS


The UIA Architecture and children work programme is launching the second edition of its Golden Cube awards, developed to recognise and promote individuals and organisations that help children and adolescents to better understand architecture. Candidates are invited to submit their projects, activities or productions developed with the goal of explaining architecture and the built environment design processes to children or youth. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: schools, institutions, written media, audio-visual media. This edition will recognise projects that were completed or will be in progress between September 2011 and March 2014. The selection process is in two stages. A national jury organised by each participating UIA member section will shortlist projects to be sent on to the international jury, that will select the four winners. Prizes will be awarded during the UIA Durban congress on 1st 10th August 2014. These prizes contribute to the goal set by UIA work programme to raise awareness about the built environment, architecture, the city and sustainable development among the youngest generations. RESPONSIBLE ARCHITECTURE

POINT Z.E.R.O. A NEW DIGITAL REVIEW


POINT Z.E.R.O. is a new online magazine promoted by the Italian Council of Architects CNAPPC. It addresses all the issues that touch on architecture and responsible management of the environment: soil conservation, promoting sustainable architectural development, urban regeneration, recycling materials, social housing, technological innovation, environmental ethics and improving the existing housing stock. Point Z.E.R.O. is structured to feature projects and realisations as well as interviews with influential people in culture and institutions, and all those engaged in the debate on sustainable development through the various scientific domains or civil society. AAA ARCASIA AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE


The Architects Regional Council Asia announced the 2013 edition of its architecture awards aimed at acknowledging exemplary projects by architects working in Asia. Structures built in ARCASIA member countries can compete in the following categories: public buildings, industrial structures, rehabilitation, socially responsible architecture, and sustainable architecture.
