How Did You Spend Your Time This Week? What Responsibilities Did You Have?

This week the student teacher took on full responsibility for teaching her class. She taught all subjects and was responsible for the students at all times. While it was challenging, the week went well and she enjoyed taking on the role of teacher. Next week will be difficult as standardized testing and an assembly will take up class time. She will focus on author's purpose in literacy and explorers in IB social studies. She is also scheduled for external observations at another school.

Student Teaching Weekly Log March 24-28th

1. How did you spend your time this week? What responsibilities did you have? This week I took on full time teaching and it has been an amazing experience. I am teaching my students in every subject and am responsible for them at all times. This is a challenging task, but this week went very well. I truly enjoyed taking on the role of full time teaching, and the tired feeling I have at the end of the day just reminds me of how hard I worked to help my students learn. For daily math review, we worked on find the area and perimeter of different shapes, as well as creating addition equations for the shaded fraction of shapes. During math time we worked on finding fractions as parts of a set, using inequalities to determine the size of fractions with like denominators and with unlike denominators, and story problems involving fractions and finding the missing part of a set. In whole group literacy and small group we focused on sequence of events and how important it is to tell a story in the correct order. Students also worked on theme and finding details from the story to support the theme. In IB this week, we continued to work on globe and map skills. We transitioned from globe to map and talked about map features. A fun lesson that I did on Thursday was created a birds eye view map of our classroom using the gradual release of responsibility and then the students created their own birds eye view posters of their room at home. I also participated in collaboration with the third grade team, IB collaboration, and CPI training for professional development. We also had a wonderful seeker come in on Friday that was a great transition into our explorers lessons for IB. 2. What were the most satisfying experiences? Greatest challenges? My most satisfying experience this week was completing my first week of full time teaching. I was also satisfied that I was able to keep the class under control when I was the only teacher in the room. It was fun to be the leader of the classroom and have all of the responsibility. The greatest challenge I had this week is the same as my most satisfying experience. Being the only teacher in the room is a wonderful experience, but it is also difficult. I was challenged to make sure I was paying attention to all of my students and answering all student questions. This was great experience for me. I really needed to be the disciplinarian this week, but I think that I was able to do so and had a successful week. 3. What are the plans for the upcoming week? Next week is a bit tricky because my third graders will be participating in Iowa Assessments all week and we also have an assembly on Monday. This takes out a lot of time in our day, and we will loose a lot of math instruction time. I will be doing lessons on authors purpose next week. In IB students will start to learn about explorers, why people explore, traits of explorers, and how things change when discoveries are made. I am also scheduled for my external observations next week, and I am very excited to see another school and see another district. This will be a very different week, but part of being a teacher is being flexible, so that is what I will need to embody next week.
