Active or Passive

The passive voice structures sentences so that the subject experiences the action rather than causes it. For example, "The dog chased the cat" is active while "The cat was chased by the dog" is passive. Some key differences are that in the passive voice, the subject of the active sentence becomes the object, and the object becomes the subject. The agent, or the doer of the action, can be omitted or added after the verb with "by".

The passive is a way of structuring a sentence so that the grammatical subject is the person or thing which experiences the

effect of an action, rather than the person or thing which causes the effect:

An active verb or sentence is one in which the subject is the person or thing which performs the stated action: The dog chased the cat. The builders will build the house shortly. Jane Austen wrote this book. They have eaten the cake.
