We desperately need a new city parking garage, said Cecil Miller, president of the association. And not only that, its closer to the train station and easy to get downtown from here. If we can advertise great access to public transportation, more people will attend. Well, we still have six months to plan, so hopefully it hasnt been booked yet. Six months isnt that much time considering everything we have to do. First we should check with the hotel and see how much they charge for conventions. We might not even have enough money in the budget for this place.

That means theyll likely end up having to take some unpaid leave. Well, Im afraid that parttimers never get the same benefits as full-timers. Lots of people work part-time because they do other jobs or go to school. They deserve the same holiday time as full-time workers.

Thats great. Did it take him long to install the machine? I spent about two days trying to figure ours out before I hired some help. It didnt take him too long. Only about four or five hours Id say. And I used to spend at least an hour a day washing dishes. I bet your kids are more willing to help out with the loading and emptying.
Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation. Man They took a survey last month to see how many people watched the Olympics on TV. The results were published this week. Did you see them? No, I havent read the paper all week. We watched a bit of the Olympics this year, but only the events we were interested in. According to the survey, only 33 percent of the population watched the Olympics at any given time. Ill bet that number changed when it was an important hockey game. Even I watched the hockey games, and I dont know much about the sport.

Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation. Woman As usual, well close the shop for two days after the holidays. We always take inventory during the shutdown. We have to take a look at what we have in stock before the nice weather kicks in. It must take a lot of work to go through all of those office supplies. We do the same thing every year, so its a pretty standard procedure. The hardest part is finding places to put things when they arrive. That does sound difficult!
Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation. Woman My new employee started a week ago, and hes very friendly and gets along with everyone. upcoming week, we advise you to carry an umbrella every morning. The rainy season will begin today. Afternoons will be dry and sunny, but if you take a walk, be home early; rains will begin again in the evening and continue through the night and morning. While the rain is good news for farmers and gardeners, some local citizens were hoping it might hold off a little longer. The annual bike-for-charity event is scheduled to start at 8:00 A.M. tomorrow morning, rain or shine. Though bikers will probably get off to a wet start, the roads should dry just in time for them to start coming through the finish line. The first few bikes generally roll in sometime around 1:00 P.M. Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following report. Something strange has happened at least once every year at about this same time, and this year is no exception. Two reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) were registered with police last week by two local residents. The man and woman, both of Harris Drive in Sydney, claim to have seen three spaceships land on their farm and then take off again a few minutes later. They described the spaceships as white and box shaped. After an initial survey of the land, no physical damage was reported. Police are investigating. Last year, Allan and Sue Reins, also of Harris Drive, went public with their UFO sighting. The couple was widely criticized by local citizens. Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following announcement. Power company reserves are extremely low at present due to the prolonged heat wave this area has been experiencing. The city has hit record temperatures four days in a row with the thermometer reaching 40 degrees Celsius. In addition, the citys air pollution alert is higher than it has ever been before. To combat the heat, people are running their fans and air conditioners night and day. However, if we dont all work to conserve energy, local utility workers say all power reserves will be used up by the end of the month. This has never happened before in our city, and we all need to work together to prevent a power crisis. City officials are therefore requesting that businesses only use their cooling systems in
the afternoon and that private homes use theirs in the evening and early morning hours. Retirement homes, hospitals, and schools are exempt from this request and should continue to use cooling systems during operating hours. Your full cooperation will be appreciated. Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following report. In a strange twist of events yesterday, a man actually bit a dog. According to observers, a black stray dog was lying in the sun near a bus stop when a city bus stopped to let passengers off. A dentist dressed in a red raincoat got off the bus and accidentally stepped on the dogs tail. The dog immediately proceeded to wrap his teeth around the mans leg in anger. By all accounts, only by biting the dog on the head could the victim get him to release his hold. Both dentist and dog are reported to be doing fine after short visits to their respective doctors. The dog has been placed in a New Jersey shelter, but it is unknown whether or not it will be adopted. Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following weather report. The meteorologists report that came to our radio announcers desk this morning reads: Inclement weather ahead. Precipitation imminent. Our translation: Another storm coming. Rain likely to happen without delay. This disappointing report comes as a surprise considering yesterdays blue skies and balmy weather. Our photographers caught people all over town yesterday leaving the office a few hours early to enjoy the beautiful afternoon weather. Before yesterday wed experienced 14 consecutive days of rain and only a few hours of sun. Though the rain has been great for the flowers and trees, we have had little opportunity to enjoy the blooming gardens in the past few weeks. Fortunately, next week theyre calling for record highs and sunshine. With a summer that seems like it might never arrive, thats something everyone has been waiting to hear. So it looks like you may need to get your umbrellas out one more time, but despite the precipitation records we have set this spring, theres hope that this rain wont

his rise to fame. This film features awardwinning actor Bernardo Alves, who plays all of his own music. Speeding Faster, starring Elina Sarrafian and Umit Kaukonen, details the lives of two female race car drivers and the turns their careers take. Speeding Faster is a remake of the 1982 hit film Women and Wheels, based on the novel of the same name. Critics are saying that Sarrafian plays the role of Charlie even better than the original. Show times are at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:30 P.M. with matinees at 2:30 P.M. on Saturdays and Sundays. Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following announcement. The Thunder Bay Professional Firefighters Association will be holding their third annual art auction on Saturday, September 27, at 6:00 P.M. at the Labor Hall of Ontario. Two original oils by Buchtmann and Van der Marits will be up for bidding. There will be collectible sports cards, animation gels, and many prints by a wide range of contemporary artists. Some of the artists will be attending the event itself, including local watercolor artist Tanner Styles. Styles will be promoting his watercolor class, which is available for beginner and novice painters at the Thunder Bay Community Center. Also available are three sculptures by Ontario native White Cloud Lafayette, depicting life in the early part of the last century. Proceeds from the auction go to benefit fire safety awareness in Ontario. Unlike previous years, we will not be holding the additional silent auction for amateur art. There will, however, be amateur art on display in the lobby that will be available for purchase by donation. Tickets are $30 per person at the door of the Labor Hall. Dinner will be served. Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following weather report. Despite yesterdays forecast for warmer temperatures, it is going to be cold and dreary today with a high of 34 degrees Fahrenheit. A cold front has come in from the east and brought with it plenty of freezing rain and sleet. is partially to blame for the closure, though it is unknown at this time whether the accident was weather-related. Alternate routes into downtown, including Main Avenue Bridge, are slow due to icy conditions and stalled vehicles. So if you plan on going out, you may want to leave your car at home today. Remember to dress warmly and take an umbrella. Questions 86 through 88 refer to the following announcement. During 1994, civil war destroyed much of Colberias economy, especially the infrastructure of the capital, Soloniki. Businesspeople fled the country, taking money and expertise with them. Most of them will not return. Colberia is richly endowed with fresh water, rain forests, and petroleum resources and had been a producer and exporter of timber, oil, and agricultural products. War, however, has greatly destroyed the economic good times that Colberia once enjoyed. Political instability now threatens its prospects for economic reconstruction and for the return of the two million refugees who fled to neighboring countries. In order to attract refugees back to the area, the government would have to first be able to guarantee that jobs, food, and safety would be a priority. However, many refugees have claimed that they will not return to their homeland no matter what incentives are offered. Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following message. You have reached Mainframe International, a global leader in propane technology. None of our workers are currently available to take your call. Our office hours are from 9 until 6 Monday through Friday and 9 to 12 on Saturday. The office also closes on statutory holidays. Please leave a message and your call will be returned on the next working day. Leave your full name, telephone number, and the purpose of your call. If this is an emergency and you need to speak to someone immediately regarding a propane leak or gas fitting, call your local law enforcement number, or dial 911. Do not wait until our next working day to report toxic fumes. One of our on-call service personnel can be made available to you 24 hours a day through the police. Thank you for calling Mainframe. Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following talk. Thank you for attending this evenings talk. Were all concerned about a serious problem in our community, and Id like to share some solutions with you this evening. As youre all aware, the beauty of our coastal location brings a lot of tourist dollars into our area. Tourists enjoy seeing the wildlife, visiting the marina, and looking at our boats. However, in the past few months, the number of seals living in our harbor has drastically increased. This tremendous increase in the seal population is causing problems. Theyre loud and they like to climb onto our boats. In fact, last week one boat took on water and sank because so many seals were on it! Since there are laws against killing or harming seals, we need to take a creative approach to this problem. Here are some solutions that worked in another town. Questions 95 through 97 refer to the following news report. Today the Family Foundation announced its findings from a two-year study. The foundation studied schoolchildren in the United States, ages 6 to 18, and their use of computers. They learned that 98 percent of the children in the study have used a computer at least one time. Some of these children have computers at home, and some do not. More children from wealthier families, about 85 percent, have computers at home and frequently use them. The study also showed that by 12 years of age these children had more advanced computer skills than their parents. However, only 40 percent of children from low-income families have computers, and they dont use their computers as often. There are several possible reasons for this. One may be that these children have older

40
computers that need repairs, and another may be that they tend to have slower Internet connections, or none at all. There could also be a lack of family or school support. Parents of these children also tend to have little or no computer skills. The foundation plans to look into these reasons in the next study. Questions 98 through 100 refer to the following talk. Remember that your research paper is due on Wednesday. Today is Monday, so thats just two days away. Most of you have received a large amount of feedback on your work, both from your classmates and from me, and youve had the opportunity to take advantage of the excellent resources in our library.
However, if for any reason you have any additional questions, you can reach me over the phone or by e-mail. Of course, the easiest way to reach me is to talk to me after class. Im always here for at least 45 minutes after class, yet on most days I dont even have one student in to see me. I should note that, in general, students who discuss their papers with a professor during the final draft stage score higher than those who do not. Remember that your papers due at the beginning of the next class. That does not mean that you can sort your pages and check for spelling mistakes throughout Wednesdays class. Any paper handed in after I take attendance will be marked late. See you then!

expected to be granted as soon as next week as most city officials have expressed a favorable attitude towards the new factory because of the estimated 250 new jobs it will bring to the city. Acme hopes to begin construction of the new facility early next year. In anticipation of the announcement, residents of the area close to the planned factory site have been organizing for the past few weeks to oppose the plans, saying that it will make their neighborhood an unattractive place to live and negatively affect property prices. Questions 89 through 91 refer to the following announcement. May I have your attention please? We apologize that the subways are running behind schedule today due to the inclement weather.
