FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy National Volunteer Week! Our newsletters often contain thanks and
acknowledgement of the huge contribution our parent and community
volunteers make to our learning community. This week, as part of this national
celebration, I thank again our generous volunteers for their support with class
activities, excursions, camps, school promotion, fund-raising, catering, working
bees, and much, much more.

Working Bee on Sunday 25 May, 9.00-12.00pm
Once again we are hoping to have a crew of volunteers to help rejuvenate our
sandpits, top-up our playground soft-fall, de-cobweb the eaves, and generally
spruce up the school before winter sets in. Even if you can only spare half an
hour wed love to see you Sunday week. If you are able to bring along a wheel
barrow and tools that would be fantastic. See the advertisement promoting
this event elsewhere in the newsletter.

Student Free Day Monday 26
rd
May
Another date to pop in your calendar is our Report Writing Day on Monday 26
rd

May. There will be no students at school on this day. This is so teachers can
make an early start on this time consuming process. Unfortunately, Stepping
Stones Out of School Hours Care will not be available on this day.

Transition Forms due Friday 23
rd
May
Families of grade 6 students please check your childs school bag for a
Transition Form tomorrow afternoon (Friday 18
th
May). This form needs to be
completed and returned to school by the following Friday, 23 May. The
transition form is to let us know which secondary school you would like your
child to attend. We then pass this information on to the relevant school to
begin the transition process to secondary school. There will be a letter and a
page of FAQs with the form to answer any questions you may have. If youd
like more information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Scholastic Books
Weve recently taken delivery of new readers and beautiful big books for our
Foundation children from Scholastic Books. These were purchased with the
rewards earned from all the book orders our students have made every month.
Keep those book orders coming in. The kids love them and the rewards are a
great benefit to our classes.

NAPLAN clarification
Our Year 3 and 5 students have just completed the annual NAPLAN tests. The
children have persisted well with this long test period and have strived for
their personal best. Ive had a few NAPLAN questions asked of me and I
thought there may be other people wondering similar things:
Are the NAPLAN results linked to school funding? The short answer is No.
There have, however, been some cases when schools, where students had
poor results, were given additional funds to support their students.
Our Mission
Keeping the child at the centre of all
we do.

Our Vision
Wangaratta Primary School is com-
mitted to developing creative think-
ers with a curiosity to learn. We
strive to personalise the learning for
every child by developing their skills,
passions and interests. This keeps
the child at the centre of everything
we do.

Our Values
Respect
Tolerance & Inclusion
Ready to Learn
Personal Best
Page 2
Are any students excluded from
NAPLAN at WPS? No. All students
have the right to participate and
only a childs parent or guardian can
decide to withdraw their child. As
part of our duty of care we do
check with some parents if they
wish their child to participate when
we feel participating in the three
days of testing might impact
negatively on the child.

Safe Drop-Offs and Pick-Ups
And finally, a reminder to be very
careful when picking up and dropping
off your child from school. I know
parking is at a premium at these times
of day but please do not park (no
matter how quickly) in the No
Standing zones either side of our
crossing. It limits vision of the
crossing and puts our kids at risk.
Thanks. Have a good week.

Chaplains Chunk

I came across a good
article in the paper this
week about a book written by a lady
describing herself as a MOB (mother
of Boys). The author, Hannah Evans,
has three boys which is the same
number as my wife and I have (plus 2
girls, FOG) and I can agree with a lot
of what she says! For example: boys
needs are really quite simple,
Exercise, discipline, lunacy and love.
Also: Making a mess in the name of
science is an important part of the
mainly male mindset. I like the way
she talks. Being an overgrown boy
myself, I think shes spot on. Thirdly,
and most importantly, boys need to go
outside to let off steam at least twice
a day, every day. Or be warned, she
says, it will be you, not just him, who
is climbing the walls.
Our boys (and girls) grow up fast and
the article was a good reminder to
have fun with our children and help
them grow active, healthy and happy,
while we can. I have copies of the
article if anyone is interested. Happy
MOBing, MOGing, FOBing and FOGing.

Last week the junior school students went on a tour
around Wangaratta. Whilst they were out they found
many of Wangarattas landmarks including parks.
Library, monuments and of course our famous rivers.
The excursion allowed us to learn a little about what
makes up Wangaratta and its history. We will now be
able to use what we have learnt about Wangaratta
when comparing our life to life in other countries.

What a great start
as a team

We were at St Bernards as the
rumble of the footie players ran
onto the field waiting for the first
whistle to blow. The ball smashed
into the ground as the first quarter
started.
We may have not kicked any goals
in the first half but it was all about
us in the second half. Even though
we tried our best, we didnt win
with the final score being 37points
to 74 points but theres hope that
we will win next time.
Thanks to Brylee, Dylan, Robbie and
Jacob for giving up their playing
time to help out umpiring, scoring
and timing.
Every player played great but
special mentions need to go to Josh
who did some great tackles, Nikita
who made a spectacular mark,
Ethan with great persistence
throughout the whole game and
Charlie and Harvey who were great
rovers.
