Perseverance pays off for
Grand Pri x vi ct ors
Based on the nal tallies, perseverance would appear to be the
key to success in Tom Kat's Grand Prix competition. Of almost 3000
runners to have participated in one or more of the events, only 70
TRRC members have qualied for ofcial club ranking.
The Tom Kat series, the rst attempt by the TRRC at this type
of format, started in March and ran through the end of July. Seven
local favorites were designated as as grand prix races. The Saint
Patrick s Day , DiLaurentiis Pasta Pace, North County News, Debbie
Schramm, Jan Peek lOKs, Lincoln Hall 5 miler and Father Mooneys 8
miler comprised the eld. To be eligible a runner must have com
pleted at least ve of the seven events and been a bona de mem

"Exercise is absolutely essential to good health. It's the cornerstone for any
complete effort to reduce the risk of heart attack and sudden death. It's also a
major key to an energetic long life."
Talk about thelling us things we want to hear! The above quotation is the op
ening paragraph of Dr. Kenneth Cooper's latest book, Running Without Fear, a book
which he states is written in response to the reaction to the death of Jim Fixx. As
many of us who do a bit of running can attest, naysayers came out of the woodwork
when news of Fixx' death while jogging was published. And I think it is fair to say
this tragedy threw a scare into the jogging/running community.
Dr. Cooper's book reviews some of the myths which have arise from the tness
boom, and step by step presents a plan for any person to run/exercise safely ^ with
out f ear. I t hi nk most r unner s wi l l get somet hi ng f r om t hi s l at est wor k of t he

We're just wild about Harry,
He gives his all to the club
He takes all the chances.

Dr. Cooper's book reviews some of the myths which have arise from the tness
boom, and step by step presents a plan for any person to run/exercise safely 5 with

Kenneth Cooper's latest book. Running Without Fear, a book
which he states is written in response to the reaction to the death of Jim Fixx. As
many of us who do a bit of running can attest, naysayers came out of the woodwork
when news of Fixx' death while jogging was published.
