The Jablonskis were quite prominent,
as no fewer than ve of the Mahopac
family competed. They were not alone, as
other families Joined in the fray:
Brennans (Mt. Kisco), Powers (Brewstec),
Kennedys (Putnam Valley)-, Galfanos
(Peekskill), Oxmans (Yorktown), and the
Dillons of Lake Carmel to name a few.
Several youngsters came in for a round of
applause, but none more than four year-old
Bryan Trout of Peekskill, who nished the
deuce with an ear- popping grin.
And while we recognized the efforts
of the winners, a tip of the hat also to
the other end of the pack: John Keegan
(Thornwood) in the IQK and Yorktowners
Nadine Stein and Bonnie Werbell in the fun
run. Although they may not have set any
speed records, the fact remains that they
completed the course - that's all that

To determine actual lOK time,
subtract 27:00 minutes from nishing time
and add to handicap. Also, by adding 33
minutes to your handicap time, it can be
determined what time the handicapper
actually expected you to run.

competitive aspect of race day is carried
over to many, and sometimes all, other
training days. Those hard, anaerobic days
must be restri cted. There must be a
si gni cant number of weeks, or even
months, where there is no hard running.
That way, you build health as well as
tness. The winter is a good time to
devel op t hi s heal t hy "base". I f done
properly - three months of easy running
for example - racing at the end of this
period usually results in a PR, It was
good to see a number of people on March 16
r u n n i n g PR' s .
We have been told that exercise can
make us physi ol ogi cal l y younger. The
truth is, it can. Why are so many of the
runners in our club injured? Why should
people be getting less healthy as the
year s go by? We must over come our
addiction not only to the idea that if a
little is good, a lot is bet'ter, but also
to the idea of "no pain; no gain". We
must raise our level of health as well as
o u r l e v e l o f t n e s s .
Stop. Why are you runni ng? Ask
yourself that question. Now try to answer
i t h o n e s t l y.
