P E T E M C C A R D L E 1 5 K
by Anthony Galfano
On November 25th, the Taconic Masters ran
at Van Cortlandt Park in in the Bronx. This race
is three loops of the regular 5K course. It is one
of the oldest races on the circuit and was dedi
cated to Pete McCardle, who died several years
ago while running this historic course. There was
a short ceremony in memory of Pete, nicely done
by Curt Steiner. Recognition was given to his
wife, daughter and granddaughter before the race.
Taconi c Masters runners were: Bob Hermesch
4th overall with a time of 56:12 followed closely
by John Holland, 5th place (56:20), then came
Howie Bashant (58: + ), myself (59: + ), Joe
Porcaro (59: + ) and Carmelo Roldan. Although
we had gone down to run as a team, we later
found out there was no team award. Later during
t he week I r an wi t h John H. who t ol d me he f el t
like his legs got Hermesched (ambushed), dueling
i t out wi t h Bob on t he downhi l l s of t he cour se. I
quickly understood what John meant, except for
me it was agony of the feet. My feet had taken
such a beating on the rst two laps that I had to
slow down just to nish. This is one of the
tougher 15K cross-country races. But wait until
next year.

This year's seventh annual race was won by T.J. are given to those with beteran status, it was in-
Benzi from Monroe in 16:28, followed by two teresting to nd out that Mowie Bashant served in
masters runners twice T.J.'s age and then some. Vietnam while 1 was in college; and that rst-
John Holland came in at 16:46 and Howie female-veteran Katy Quinn was in the Navy and
Bashant was there at 16:48. On the women's side met her husband Steve while he was in the Navy
Joan Stenett's 19:11 gave her running room with serving on a submarine. And I'm sure if you spoke
Mary Tolson next at 20:03 and Kathleen Ford 3rd to John Burns and some of his World War 11
with 20:52. This year's race was rather quiet and buddies you could start lling up history books,
low-key. Although Veterans' Day fell on a Sun- This race seems to bring back many memories for
day, there was no big turnout. The race is held those men and women who served their country,
on the grounds of the Montrose VA Hospital and Some performances to note were Mike Daley's
it includes one steep 300-yard hill at the 2-1/4 mile and Bob Hcrmesch's running a week after nish-
mark. There are usually patients from the hospital ing a marathon. Doug Miller went one better,
in the gymnasium to watch the awards ceremony racing twice on the day, a week after doing the
and partake in the refreshments. Many of the NYC Marathon, Torn Church also doubled. The
people who help out at this race are the employ- men in the 60's ran a close competitive race. And
ees at the hospital, aside from our own club we cannot forget Clark Gilbert being the oldest
members. Thanks go to Harry Nccson (who nisher. The ladies competition was lighter, but
doubled putting on the cross country race at Blue it was the opportunity for Audry Cappiello,
Mountain in the morning then coming over to Debbie Yagoda, Denise Uva, Katy Quinn and
help me out out at the nish line). Also A1 Valeric Conners to show their stuff. Finally, if you
Capiello, Scott Abercrombie, Joe Porcaro and Ed don't think it pays to come to this race, ask Jack
McLaughlin were there to give a hand. 1 also no- Culkin! He took the winning chance in the
ticed that the masters S.R.S. relay team was pres- Vietnam Veterans' Program ralc. See you next

1 om Church, Maiiopac, held olT a driving nish by
Doug Miller to capture laconic Road Runners Club's
cross country chainpionsliip at Blue Mountain Reser
vation on Sunday.
A pack of ve runners forced the early pace and
Yorklown's I'oinmy Neeson paid the price of making a
bold move on the opening hill of the Peeksskill course
before wving way to the two-man force of Church and
Mi l l e r .
With a half i^c to go, Church held a ten-yard lead,
but Miller cut it in half before losing ground again on
the sand-covered portion 400 yards from the nish. I'hc
Brewster runner, who had just come off the New York
marathon the previous week, made one last attempt to
catch Church, but to no avail. Church won out m 17
minutes, 27 seconds with Miller two seconds back.
lony Galfano, Peekskill, who had also completed
New York, ran a ne, steady race and nished third in
18:04. His third place also gave him a successful defense
of TRRC's masters cross country title. Joann Bertram,
Mahopac, claimed the women's masters.
3 P
Peekskill runners Colleen Law and Mary Lund ran
step for step tlirougli the women's race and nished
close enough for a tie. Oicials, however, opted for Law
in the narrowest of margins, timed in 22:41. Brie
Meisler, Cold Spring, was third.

Age group titles went to Mike Barrett, Stormviile, in
the 15-18 (4lh overall); Neeson in the 19-29: Mike
Gossctt, Plcasantville, in the 30-39; John Orr, Somers,
in the 5()-59; and Cornell Stcager, Putnam Valley, in the
14 and under.
In the younger age groups, Jennifer Franks, Mohegan
Lake, and Bonnie Jean Regan, Mahopac, won their re
spective 7-.4i and 11-12 year-old age groups, marking
t icir third successive victory.
Adam Casclla, Mahopac, and Elizabeth Phelps,
Peekskill, started the day off with wins in the 1/4 mile
for the 5- and 6-ycar-olds. Dennis Robinson, Putnam
Valley, and I^uren Melillo, Yorktown, then captured
t he hal f mi l e f or 7 and 8s.
In the 3/4 mile for 9- and lO-year-olds, Yorktown's
Wes C'adman repeated the win he had in Somers, with
Jennifer Franks taking the ^I's race. Bonnie Jean
Regan then won the mile for 11 and 12s, nisliing sec
ond overall to Joseph Gianelli, also of Mahopac.
Gianelli's win marked the rst lime any of the boys had
beaten Regan, and it took a real smart and gutsy run
by Gianelh to turn the trick.
The scries is sponsored through grants the bv
Prudenti al Insurance Company and the Peekski l l -
Corllandt Rumiing Fund.
