SMOKE-SCREENS

Q. Discuss the title of the play or what is the theme of the play or
what is moral lesson of the play or who is smoke-screens for others.
ns. Smoke-Screens give meaning of the smokes which are spread only to
hide somebody or something from others. In the plays Lucy is a smoke screen for her
daughter Primrose while Primrose was a vagabound and rude girl. She smoked
cigarettes and even used lipstick and she also went to night clubs. Even that, she
came very late at night at home. She was very harsh girl. She did not respect her
mother while Lucy showed to other people that she was very good girl and she was
very polite.
Primrose decided to marry ugly ohn because she thought ohn could
never cheat her and in this way, she wanted to be the smoke-screen for ohn, while
ohn was very ugly fat, stupid, dull and !obless.
Even Lucy became smoke-screen for her daughter before her sister
Susan who wanted to e"pose all the secretes of the daughter before other people
and even, she was very happy to see her sister Lucy upset and full of tension.

#ncle ames was a strict and punctual man. $e hated la%y people. $e
wanted to see Philip in his own business but Philip wanted to become an
archeologist. Philip did not like the ruling and orders of his uncle. &hile uncle wanted
to see Philip very regular and active in life. 'unt Emily supported Philip and
convinced ames to be soft and cool.
So, #ncle ames saw a dream and in the dream, Philip had a pistol in his
hand. $e was ready to shoot uncle tried to pressuri%e Philip by the use of power of
purse but Philip used the power of pistol because he told an incident for the proof of
his maturity.
Philip told that at the front of Somme, he was in great problems. $e was
in (ritish army and )ermans knew his trench. )ermans had killed almost half of his
troop. (ut there was an order not to move ahead. So, he decided to take a personal
step by himself. $e went forward personally and he saved his half of the troop. 't the
front of Somme, he saved his soldiers and his *olonel appreciated his brave step.
#ncle ames was terri+ed by this step. $e began to think at di,erent and +nally he
decided to give a share of the property to Philip. (ut it was only a dream and #ncle
ames could never believe it whether it was dream or not. 'ctually Philip was ready
to !oin his uncle-s business because #ncle ames was a strict person.

Popova was widow and she was passing a boring life. .aka tried to
convince her to pass married life but every time. She re!ected the o,er. She was an
isolated woman. She could not marry again because her late husband was not a
good man. $e was lover type. $e wasted wealth on bad habits. Popova was a ruling
woman. She was an angry woman and she was strict.
Smirnov was a land lord and he came to Popova to take back his /011
roubles. $e was in full tension Popova was in state of mind and now she could not
pay amount. Popova was nervous at the rude behavior of Smirnov rules made fear of
her feelings, pains, state of mind and make up. She was very angry and she abused
Smirnov because. 2hey both were of same nature. 2hey were very e"pert in every
matter of life. She was rude and he was vagabound. She was alone and he needed
love. She was a survive and he was ready to +ght. She was ready to +re and he was
ready to accept challenge. $e blamed her to use make up. $e called her insincere
and cheater and faithless woman. She called him bear and soundled. 'nyhow, they
began to like each other and now she was ready to kill him. $e also wanted to shoot
her but they got marry out of love.
