SPORTS MARKETING
sports marketing is composed of several elements, and the term sport
marketing frequently is used incorrectly. People tend to define marketing in terms
of their experiences, instead of recognizing one of the most importantroles of
marketingcarrying out the mission of an organization. Some corporate executives
might describe sport marketing as selling goods and services to generate a profit.
But sport marketing is more than selling.People who work in advertising and
public relations
might consider sport marketing as obtaining Super Bowl tickets for clients or
entertaining a corporate sponsor at the US Open Golf Tournament. But sport
marketing is more than advertising and public relations. Those who provide
services for professional athletes might view sport marketing as arranging for
athletes to attend the grand opening of a shopping mall or arranging to have
corporate executives play tennis with Lleyton Hewitt or Lindsay Davenport. But
sport marketing is more than community relations.Pitts and Stotlar (2002) defined
sport marketing as the process of designing and implementing
activities for the production, pricing, promotion and distribution of a sport product
or sport business product to satisfy the needs or desires of consumers and to
achieve the companys objectivesBalancing a companys business objectives with
consumer wants and needs is a challenge in any industry, but sport marketing is
even more complex because sport has certain characteristics that make it unique. A
brief examination of sports unique combination of characteristics proposed
by Mullin, Hardy, and Sutton (2000) will show how sport differs from other
products, goods, and services and therefore why the approach to marketing sport is
unique.
The billboards at your local stadium, the corporate sponsored tournament you
watch on TV, and the commercials with athletes promoting your favorite fast-food
chain are all products of the innovative thinking and hard work of sports marketing
professionals. Although the hours can be long and the environment fiercely
competitive, sports marketing offers many rewards. Generous salaries, challenging
work, and excellent perks such as free tickets to sporting events and the chance to
meet pro athletes are only a few of the reasons sports marketing is a popular career
aspiration.
Sports marketing allows corporations to associate their brands and products with
the excitement, enjoyment, and admiration that audiences assign to games and
athletes. This industry, as a whole, derives its promotional techniques from fields
such as advertising, public relations, and marketing.
Sports marketing is a profession notorious for low turnover, and quick
advancement through the ranks is not common. More often, individuals in entry-
level positions can expect to stay there for several years. Mid- and upper-level
executive positions often become lifetime jobs because worker satisfaction is so
high. Salaries available in the sports marketing field vary by region of the country.
Most salaries for the entry-level are generally low. Wide salary ranges for the
upper-level executive positions reflect the sheer variety of sports employers, even
within the specific categories covered: sports marketing firms, corporate sports
marketing divisions, and sports leagues and associations. For example, the Director
of Marketing for a major league baseball team could earn two to three times as
much his or her counterpart in the minor leagues.
The sports marketing industry is fast-paced, exciting, and often hectic.
Marketing representatives and event coordinators deal with a never-ending stream
of requests from sponsors and clients. A quick mind, a personable attitude, and a
good deal of energy are necessary to keep up with all the work.
It can also say that Sport marketing is a subdivision of marketing which
focuses both on the promotion of sports events and teams as well as the promotion
of other products and services through sporting events and sports teams. It is a
service in which the element promoted can be a physical product or a brand name.
The goal is to provide the client with strategies to promote the sport or to
promote something other than sport through sports. Sport marketing is also
designed to meet the needs and wants of the consumer through exchange
processes. These strategies follow the traditional four "P"'s of general marketing
Product, Price, Promotion and Place, another four "P"s are added to sport
marketing, relating to the fact sports are considered to be a service. The additional
4 Ps are: Planning, Packaging, Positioning and Perception. The addition of the
four extra elements is called the "sport marketing mix."
Sport marketing impulses memberships, sales, and recognition. These factors
represent the biggest benefits for the companies, the athletes, the associations, the
leagues, and sport event managers. Well planned, effective marketing helps to
understand the customer and the marketplace. Also, informed marketing decisions
help increase status and importance in people's lives, sport is considered a
profitable and sustainable marketing source.

What positions are available in Sports Marketing?
Floater (Sports League/Association): At most professional sports leagues and
teams, the entry-level position available to recent college grads is called a floater.
Floaters are essentially temporary office assistants. When a position in a particular
department is vacated, a floater works in that division until the job is filled. The
floaters job is not very glamorous, consisting mostly of gofer work. However,
because floaters move from department to department they get to see how the team
or league is run from the inside as well as meet many people along the way.
Floaters usually work with the marketing, public relations, human resources, and
ticket sales departments.
Account Coordinator (Sports Marketing Firm): Account Coordinators at sports
marketing firms, support upper-level executive staff in the creation of marketing
strategies, the coordination of corporate sponsorships, and the planning of sporting
events. Account Coordinators help to maintain strong relationships with the firms
corporate clients. Previous experience in sports marketing, such as an internship or
volunteer position, is required. Account Coordinators do a little bit of everything
and must have good writing and oral communication skills.
Event Coordinator (Sports Marketing Firm): The Event Coordinator position is
available both within sports marketing firms and in-house departments. This
position requires a great breadth of experience in the field and is one of the more
difficult entry-level positions to acquire. Working with the Event Director, an
Event Coordinator assists with operations both on and off-site, and must be
attentive to every detail of event staging. Event Coordinators also correspond with
corporate sponsors, ensuring that all their needs are met.
Marketing Representative (Sports Marketing Division): Marketing
representatives for sporting goods manufacturers are called upon to do a wide
variety of tasks, from keeping track of the athletes who endorse your companys
products, to grassroots market research. Marketing reps need to be flexible and
able to handle multiple tasks. They primarily work with athletes on college and pro
teams, making sure they are supplied with the companys product.
Public Relations Assistant (Sports League/Association): Most teams, leagues,
sports merchandise manufacturers, and sports marketing firms have a PR
department, because public relations is a big part of sports marketing. In order for a
sporting event to be successful, it must receive media attention, which is often
generated through public relations. PR assistants work with the department head to
draft press releases and pitch stories to the media. PR assistants for pro teams may
help direct activities in the press box on game night. PR assistants at sports
marketing firms keep track of news coverage of clients and assemble clipping
reports.

SHOOTING :
A shooting sport is a competitive sport involving tests of proficiency (accuracy
and speed) using various types of guns such as firearms and airguns(see archery for
more information on shooting sports that make use of bows and
arrows). Hunting is also a shooting sport, and indeed shooting livepigeons was
an Olympic event (albeit only once, in 1900). The shooting sports are categorized
by the type of firearm, target and distances at which targets are shot at.
Shooting technique differs depending on factors like the type of firearm used (from
a handgun to a sniper rifle; the distance to and nature of the target; the required
precision; and the available time. Breathing and position play an important role
when handling a handgun or a rifle. Some shooting sports, such as IPSC shooting,
make a sport of combat style shooting. The prone position, kneeling position, and
standing position offer different amounts of support for the shooter. Holding the
gun sideways, as is sometimes seen in movies and on television, is poor gun
handling; it makes the weapon likely to jam as any ejected case may fail to leave
the weapon completely. There is an exception to this, however. "Bandit Shooting",
so called because of its use with Chinese bandits of the early to mid-1900s, is
where the gun (generally a handgun with a high rate of fire) is tilted on its side and
aimed, the index finger is placed on the frame, and the trigger is pulled using the
middle finger. It is used for "clean up" indoors or at very short range post-
operation, as it is fairly inaccurate.
The utmost consideration for many shooters is gun safety. Like many activities
such as mountain climbing, skiing, or sky-diving, there is an element of danger
involved. And especially here, this danger demands a sober understanding and
respect for firearms and the specific rules for the safe handling of them. This is
compounded by the fact that the danger can easily extend beyond the
participantsa stray bullet can injure or kill people other than those actually firing
or handling the arms involved. At public ranges, the safety of all participants
depends on the knowledge of everyone at the range.
Shooting is a target sport that covers a number of different types of events for men
and women including: Rifle, Pistol, Trap, Skeet and Running Target. They all use
different weapons and ammunitions.
Shooting in India :
Shooting is an important Olympic sport in India. Of India's 26 Olympic medals, 4
have come from Shooting including a Gold by Abhinav Bindra in the 2008
Olympics. Indian shooters who have excelled at the world stage include Abhinav
Bindra, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Vijay Kumar, Gagan Narang, Ronjan Sodhi
and Anjali Bhagwat.
2012 Olympics
The Indian shooting contingent for the 2012 London were one of the largest ever.
There were a total of 11 shooters which included 4 female shooters. India's first
Olympic medal came from shooting when Gagan Narang won the bronze in the
10m Air Rifle event. This was the same event in which another Indian shooter
Abhinav Bindra won India its first individual gold medal four years ago in Beijing.
Ironically this time Bindra crashed out in the qualification rounds. The second
medal came from the unheralded army man Vijay Kumar when he won the silver
in the 25m rapid fire pistol event after finishing 4th in the qualification rounds. He
had to fend off some tough competition from the third placed Chinese Ding Feng.
A notable performance was made by Joydeep Karmakar who finished 4th in the
50m rifle prone event. A strong medal prospect Ronjan Sodhi who is an Asian
Games gold medallist, however crashed out in the qualification rounds of the
Double trap event. None of the female shooters made a mark at the 2012
Olympics.
Administration :
The sport is administered in India by the .The NRAI The association organises the
following tournaments every year:
National Shooting Championship Competitions (NSCC)
All India G.V. Mavlankar Shooting Championship (AIGVMSC)
Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Masters Shooting Championship
Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Shooting Championship
All India Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial Inter School Shooting
Championship
Shimon Sharif is one of India's top shooting experts and a great promoter of
shooting. He represented India at the Shooting World Cup in 2003 at Korea and
floated India's first shooting website indianshooting.com.
HISTORY OF SHOOTING :
Shooting has been a popular sport in India since yore. Shooting was a favorite
sport with the Maharajas of the former princely states of India. These Indian kings
were expert with guns and often used to go on shooting sprees on horseback. The
shooting expertise was an essential constituent of the royal grooming process and
hence the origin of some of the leading shooters of India can be traced back to the
erstwhile imperial families of India.
Shooting as a sport gained importance in India when the National Rifle
Association of India(NRAI) was set up in 1951.NRAI which is affiliated to the
(ISSF)- International Shooting Sports Federation, is the principal administrative
body promoting the sport of shooting in India. Indian shooters came into limelight
for the first time after winning the first individual Olympic silver medal. The
famous shooters of India who have glorified India's name are Abhinav Bindra, Dr.
Karni Singh, Gagan Narang. Randhir Singh, Rajyavardhan Rathore, Jaspal Rana
Anjali Bhagat and Samresh Jung.
Jaspal Rana was one of the great shooters of India who bagged the gold medal at
the 46th World Shooting Championship (Junior Section) and had a world record
score of 590 points in the Centre Fire Pistol at Milan in 1994. Since then Jaspal
Rana has won a plethora of accolades both in national and international events.
Anjali Bhagat the female ace shooter attracted four gold medals in the individual
and pairs events at the Manchester Commonwealth Games of 2002. She became
the first Indian to qualify for the Olympics in the year 2004.She also received the
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for 2003-2004.
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won the first individual silver medal for India in
the Men's Double Trap event at the Summer Olympics. He also won gold medal at
the Men's Double Trap at the Asian Clay Shooting Championships, 2005 in
Bangkok.
Abhinav Singh Bindra (born 28 September 1982, in Dehradun is
an Indian shooter and is a World and Olympic champion in the 10 m Air
Rifleevent. By winning the gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games, he became the first Indian to win an individual
gold medal at the Olympic Games. It was also India's first gold medal
since 1980, when the Men's Field Hockey Team won the gold. He is the first
and only Indian to have held both the World and Olympic titles at the same
time, a feat he accomplished by capturing the Gold Medal at the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing, after having won the gold at the 2006 ISSF
World Shooting Championships.
Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games
He is also the brand ambassador by State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd.
and also a member of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and
Industry (FICCI) Sports Committee since 2010.
OLYMPIC SHOOTER IN INDIA
Indian shooter Gagan Narang may have won a bronze at the London
Olympics, but back home it has assured him of a golden opportunity
with respect to brand endorsements. With this win, Narang, who was
so far not in the spotlight for endorsements, joins the growing list of
non-cricket sports personalities whose value of endorsements have got
a boost each time they clinched an Olympics medal.
The endorsement fee of athletes in sports other than cricket is said to
be in the Rs 10-20 lakh range. So for a nation where cricket is a craze,
endorsement values of Rs 25-50 lakh for a sport like shooting is
certainly laudable.
"After the medal win, Narang's popularity in the brand world will
shoot up 100 times. As of now, Narang has hardly been present in the
brand world. This win will give him a push into the endorsement
market," said Navin Khemka, managing partner, Zenith Optimedia, a
media agency
India's growing list of non-cricket stars used in brand endorsements
include boxer Vijender Singh, who won a bronze medal for India in
2008, and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who won a silver medal in
2004 Athens Olympics.
"There is a lot more awareness, especially among youngsters and this
will help sports like shooting with more endorsements," said Melroy
D'Souza, COO, Professional Management Group, a sports
management company that handles Bindra's brand endorsements.
Supratik Roy, director, Affinity Cinemedia, said, "Considering that
shooting as a sport does not have as much mass appeal as cricket, the
popularity of sportsmen like Narang will remain concentrated on
premium and niche categories like luxury, lifestyle, banking services,
computers and such others. If the number of wins from India is not too
big, Narang has a shot at earning more brand value."
Narang's newfound glory has already attracted Milagrow HumanTech
which, in consultation with Narang, will launch a special edition of
TabTop PCs and robots in his honor. While this is not strictly a brand
endorsement, 5% of the sales proceeds of the products will go to
Narang as part of the special promotion, said Rajeev Karwal, founder
& CEO, Milagrow Business & Knowledge Solutions.
Samsung, which is a global sponsor for the Olympics 2012, said the
win will boost Narang's image. "Narang is among
our Samsung Olympic 'Ratnas' and we are sure a lot of brands will
want to sign him up after the win," a Samsung spokesperson said.
Anjali Mandar Bhagwat (born December 5, 1969) is a
professional Indian shooter. The former world number one is
considered to be one of the greatest Indian women athletes of all time.
She became the World Number One in 10m Air Rifle in 2002. Anjali
also won her first World Cup Final in Milan, in 2003, with a score of
399/400.
She is the only Indian to have won the ISSF Champions Trophy
in Air Rifle Men & Women mixed event at Munich in 2002. She has
represented India in three consecutive Olympics, and was a finalist in
the2000 Sydney Olympics, again a first for any Indian women
shooter. She has won 12 gold and 4 silver medals in
the Commonwealth Games. She is a Common Wealth record holder
in 10m Air Rifle and Sports Rifle 3P. In the 2003 Afro-Asian Games,
Anjali Bhagwat created history by becoming the first Indian woman
shooter to grab gold and a silver medal in the Sports 3P and Air
Rifle events respectively. Her success in the arena of shooting has
earned her the nickname "Arjuna of India".
WHAT INSPIRES THE GENERATION :
With the results of Indian contingent in the latest Olympics held in London, there
is a question starting to regain its old heights: What can inspire future
generation to take sports as a career in India?
The London Olympic 2012s slogan Inspire a generation rang a bell. So do we
lack or the potential or the inspiration? Most of the players playing in India are
either hailing from a sporting background or from a prosperous family. So clearly
there is a lot more that India can offer, all we need is inspiration.
Lets see the factors that keep young generation intimidated rather than inspired:
1. Education system: Since school time, the education system only emphasizes on
studies and sports are just for fun.
2. Family orientation: Everyone wants their children to be either Doctors or
Engineers, but a sportsperson, no way!
3. Government support: Well, they give lot of jobs based on sports quota to
accomplished athletes, but sadly there is no institution that invites openly anyone
who has the talent, from root level.
The third problem is the main, if it is solved the above two will be automatically
solved.
So finally it just narrows down to the government that should step forward and
take measures, but the question is, what measures?
Well here is an easy and practical idea, government should establish a new kind of
institutions which emphasize on developing world class athletes. Like IITs and
IIMs, there should be an IIS (Indian Institute of Sports), where the best talent in all
sports from the entire country could get enrolled and they will carry the Indian
hopes of sporting world. The idea of creating an IIS could lead India to be one of
the best countries in the sporting world because there is a lot of talent in this
country which I have witnessed myself. The only thing that stops them is that they
dont have a path to follow. In the beginning there obviously will not be much
positive response, but I am very well-assured that if implemented this idea can
totally renovate the face of Indian sports.
People tell their children to aim and get into IITs so the boy starts preparing for it,
takes several coaching lessons, and tries to bring out his best. He gets into IIT, then
what? Now his parents want him to try harder and get into IIM, the boys struggles
again and gives his best to get into IIM. Before the boy can even make a bold
decision for his life his ship is already in the sea where there is no turning back.
The reason behind the world acknowledging the brains of India today makes it
very clear how much potential we have, the rising competition among the students
make them one of the best brains not only in the country but also in the world.
I am not asking to change the education pattern of India and make it like the
American education system which has a complete organisation called NCAA
(National Collegiate Athletic Association) dedicated to bring new talents in sports
and support them to get better while their education is underway. This will take
way bigger steps and investment and truth be told, India isnt ready for it yet. But
India definitely requires an institution where student athlete is a known term,
where sports are the main priority and the infrastructure is good enough to train the
students for world class competition.
For other countries Indians are usually known as brainy people. This is because of
our orientation. Imagine a boy who has enrolled in IIT. He figures that if IIT
wouldnt have been everything in the country then he could have used his potential
to do something that he loves the most, something that he wanted to do all his life
when he was a child. If the orientation changes from getting into IIT to getting into
IIS, the results would be beyond imagination. Though it feels like a dream but it
could be reality because this is by far the most practical idea I have ever known to
improve situation of Indian sporting world. This could be very easily implemented
by government, if not, the idea is so simple that even private organizations can
implement it.
If we really care for our future generation we should write a request to the
government for establishment of such institutions. Combined efforts of us all can
only make it strong issue. If we want our children to live their dream, this step is
required to be taken. There a lot of movements already started to promote sports all
over the country these movements can be easily utilized to raise this agenda.
I am an engineering student myself but I am trying with my sweat and blood to
become a Lawn Tennis professional. Well, it is very hard to defy the rules, doing
something off the hook just takes everything out of you, I know I am not the first
one to try anything like this, but this just proves how many are just waiting for an
institution like IIS to open. We do have sports in the schools but when the question
comes about career nobody even faces towards the fields. Why is that? Because
there is no reputable career in sports. Well this could all change when in the days
to come a young student stands up in a career orientation conference and say, Sir,
I want to be a professional athlete, I want to get into IIS.

INDIA FACING THE PROBLEM IN SHOOTING
THOUGH HAVING A GOOD STRENGTH :
The State of Sports in India :
India is a huge country with a massive population. Our population is a resource for
the nation. A country with the second largest population has won less Olympic
gold medals than the United States swimmer, Michael Phelps, has won alone in a
single edition of Olympics.
Today, every child either wants to be a doctor or engineer or do M.B.A. But why?
Why not children go for sports as a career? One of the major reasons may be that
there is no guarantee that they would be selected to play in the national squad. In
India, only one sport i.e. cricket gets all the attention. All other sports have been
totally neglected.
The richer sport is getting richer and other sports are almost dead. The condition
of state level and university level sports are even worse. In countries like the
U.S.A, many students choose sports as a career, they have a very solid
infrastructure for sports and a remarkable proportion of its population earns huge
money by playing sports only. Their sports start at the grass root level. Schools
provide scholarships to students who excel in sports. Schools have proper coaching
and playing facilities for students and sports is given the same importance as
academics.
Their university level and state level organisation is also solid, with great funding.
Players can earn a lot even at that level. In India, other than cricket, no sport has a
good infrastructure. In other sports, even at national level, players dont earn much.
If a person has the ability to prove himself at international level, even then there is
no backing and financial support from the sports authority. The athlete has to do it
on his own.
Beijing Olympic gold medal winner Abhinav Bindra had his personal shooting
range for practice. He clearly stated that the facilities provided by the authority
were below par. The media showed where Olympic bronze medal winner wrestler
Sushil Kumar had his training. There were not even basic facilities. How do we
expect our sportsperson and athletes to win medals and tournaments when they are
not even provided with basic facilities?
Children in India dont even know if there are sports other than cricket! Cricket
is a sport which children can play anywhere without spending much money on
equipment. Many regions in India dont have even a park for children to play.
It has to start at the grass root level if sports are to become a source for income for
the Indian population. In developed countries like the U.S.A, there are grounds and
sports complex for every sport everywhere. Children grow up playing with proper
equipments and in the same environment. They dont have to adapt to any changes
when they make transition to competitive level.
Here in India, even if children are interested in a shooting, then first of all coaching
is not available easily, secondly not much funds are available for practice and most
importantly, children dont get proper exposure to competition. In India, a sport
gets recognition only when a sportsperson wins a major tournament of his sport.
But why wait for an athlete to win a tournament to give that sport some
importance? Something has to be done so that athletes dont waste their talent
sitting in front of a computer doing accounting.
India has such a huge population, with a lot of untapped talent, which, if given a
chance, can do wonders at international level. The cricket extravaganza known as
IPL has helped find a lot of great talent, which otherwise would have lost in the
crowd. The franchisees pay these young men handsomely to play for them. The
involvement of popular Bollywood faces didnt hurt it. This is what shooting
needs. Proper budget, advertisement, endorsement from popular faces and most
importantly television deals.
Lack of government interest is also hurting the shooting in India, shooting is given
the least priority. The government needs to understand that shooting can be
solution for unemployment and poverty issues. It can raise the standard of living of
Indian societies. The rate at which shooting is developing is really slow, we should
learn from China, who in a short period of time has reached the top of sports
world.
Middle class families dont even think about putting their children in shooting
because of it is costly, its only the financially strong families who back their
children to pursue sports as a career and in sports only cricket. Every news channel
has cricket specialists discussing and analysing cricket matches and other cricket
related news everyday, while all other sports are wrapped up in 10-15 minutes. The
media has to play an important role in recognising and popularising sports other
than cricket. The youth is the future of any country and sports is the future of the
whole world and its the responsibility of the youth to create awareness about
different sports and take positive steps in that direction
HOW CAN BE BENEFITS OF SHOOTING SPORTS USE
AS MARKETING STRATEGY:
The following 15 statements represent just a few of the many "benefits" that can be
found in the shooting sports.
1) It is a Fun Sport. No fancy excuses or rationalization here, the shooting sports
are just plain fun. Whether shooting inside, using your BB or pellet gun, or outside
plinking at cans, target shooting, or cowboy action shooting, it is great fun.
However, as important as words are to good communication, this "fun" element of
the shooting sports cannot fully be described. It must be experienced! So, grab a
friend and go the closest shooting range and "taste and see" for yourself.
2) It is a Safe Sport. Though the instruments of this sport can be dangerous, in
reality when compared to other individual or group sporting activities (football,
basketball, tennis, swimming, driving, biking etc.) the shooting sports are quite
safe.
According to the National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 1999 and a 1991 Harvard
Medical Practice Study:
You are 100 times more likely to be injured in a swimming pool than by a gun.
You are 31 times more likely to be injured riding in a car than by a gun.
You are 1,900 times more likely to be injured by an "iatrogenic" error than by a
gun ("iatrogenic" error is medical speak for a doctor or hospital injuring you
accidentally).
And, with the growing number of gun safety/training programs, the number of
injuries are declining and are at an all time low. This is in contrast to the fact that
the number of firearm owners in America (as a whole) is on the rise.
3) It is a Family Sport. This is a sport that almost every family member can enjoy
together. It is also a sport that boys and girls, or men and women, can participate in
together. Granddad and grandson, father and daughter, great family memories
lasting a lifetime are made here. Why not start making some of your own, now!
4) It is an Individual Sport. You can also shoot by yourself without any assistance
from anyone, if that is your desire. Here, you have time to think and enjoy solitude.
Time to grow in your marksmanship abilities at your own pace.
5) It is a Lifetime Sport. Shooting can begin early and continue through most of an
adult's normal life span. And, with the expansion of high-tech gadgets available
today, many disabled individuals can excel in some of the highest levels of
competition.
6) Its Training: Builds Physical Discipline. In an age of the "couch potato," this
sport can help build many physical disciplines that are not only healthy but
enjoyable. Increased strength, stamina, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor
skills are just a few of the physical disciplines acquired in the shooting sports that
apply, not only to this sport, but to all of life.
7) Its Training: Increases Mental Discipline. To the surprise of many, the shooting
sports are primarily mental sports. Experienced marksmen think sport shooting is
90% mental. Concentration levels are sharpened and expanded. Multiple problem
solving activities involving logic, mathematics, and creative thinking (thinking
"outside the box") are needed and employed to succeed at any level of the shooting
sports. This is truly a "thinking man's" (and women's) sport.
8) Its Training: Advances Personal Responsibility. Personal responsibility is taught
throughout the shooting sports to advance both safety and skill development. The
shooting sports also cultivate personal responsibility because they are a foundation
for both security and liberty in any family or nation.
"Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." -- George
Bernard Shaw
9) Its Training: Promotes Liberty. Shooting sports provide a natural environment
to educate all citizens with a historically honest view of freedom. We need to
rejuvenate the vision of "liberty" our founding fathers saw so clearly. It is no
mistake that the tools mastered in the shooting sports have been called "the
people's liberty teeth." This is one of the reasons the 2nd amendment in America's
Bill of Rights was adopted.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free... it expects what never was and
never will be." -- Thomas Jefferson (America's 3rd President)
(Note: To help you promote the founding fathers' view of "liberty" see the new
documentary "Innocents Betrayed," produced by Jews for the Preservation of
Firearms Ownership. This film proves historically, regardless of century or culture,
how "official" governments use gun control to disarm and then enslave or murder
people by the millions. It will also show you how "gun control" in America, and
other countries, results in people being killed right now.)
10) Its Training: Preserves Life and Family. Contrary to popular opinion, guns
save lives! The most scholarly research in the last 10 years has shown in the U.S.
alone, firearms are used successfully 2.5 million times each year to prevent crime,
or 6,849 times every day. The shooting sports teach safe and effective use of these
life-saving instruments.
11) Its Training: Assists in Crime Prevention. Because the shooting sports teach
safe and effective use of the tools proven to prevent crime, along with character
building disciplines, it provides "salt and light" influences for any society. In this
way law-abiding citizens can overcome the naturally occurring "decay and
darkness" of the lawless.
12) Its Training: Assists in National Defense. Terrorism, whether it is domestic or
foreign, always decreases when law-biding citizens have the tools, abilities and
mindset (i.e. will & moral authority) to use them in order to prevent the unlawful
destruction of life. The training provided in the shooting sports sharpens both
abilities and mindset.
13) Its Training: Provides Enhanced Educational Opportunities. Another little-
known fact is that the shooting sports are some of the most popular events in the
Olympics. 17 Olympic events (10 for Men and 7 for Women) in four Olympic
disciplines (rifle, pistol, running target and shotgun) were held during the 2000
Olympic Games in Sydney and are scheduled in the 2004 Athens Games. This is
why several universities and private trusts have monies allocated providing
scholarships for young marksmen, male or female.
14) Its Training: Is Conducted in a Friendly and Helpful Environment. The people
involved in the shooting sports are some of the most helpful, honest and "salt of the
earth" kind of folks you will meet. Most are friendly people who are both able and
willing to help you improve in any aspect of this sport.
15) Its Training: Promotes the Values Needed for a Safe, Courageous and Self-
sacrificing Society. Character development is always necessary and good. The
shooting sports can help you overcome fear, grow in patience and think of others
as you would have them think of you ("Golden Rule" and "Good Samaritan"
charactertraits).
"Aggressive fighting for the right is the noblest sport the world affords." --
Theodore Roosevelt (America's 26th President)
FAILURE OF SHOOTING :
A school shooting is an occurrence in which gun violence takes place at an
educational institution. A school shooting involves a firearm being discharged at a
school infrastructure, and may refer to incidents of shootings on a school bus or
near school property while school is in session.
With the per capita income of India close to Rs 53,000, making shooting a
recreational sport is a wishful thinking. An average Indian earns less than 1/9th of
the cost of training for 200 days, i.e. Rs 4, 80,000, in the academy.
The cost of coaching abroad is around Rs 7,00,000 for 15 days, with no extra
facility. In GFG, aspirants get all the facilities at a discounted cost of Rs 4, 80,000
for 200 days,"
The cost of running the academy comes to Rs 2 crore annually.
We have to look at ways to reduce the course fee and make shooting affordable to
all without running in red,"
HOW TO PACKAGE SHOOTING :
Packaging the shooting as a product includes presenting the shooting in the best
possible manner to encourage selected target audiences to purchase it. Because
consumers differ, marketers must present the product in different ways. Packaging
shooting involves explaining the benefits of the shooting which has earlier
discussed. Packaging the core product of sport (the game or event itself), however,
involves communicating the expectations of the product and providing information
before the point of purchase.
For example, sport marketers might package the shooting as family entertainment
and offer family ticket plans. Or marketers might package sport as a good place to
make business contacts and offer business ticket plans. A shooting organization
that wants to be seen as one that cares about the community might offer group
discount ticket plans for social service and charitable organizations.
Another aspect of shooting packaging is the manner in which product extensions
are included in the overall sport experience.
For instance; music, halftime promotions, and entertainment contribute to the
overall packaging Of shooting. Some consumers may not be specifically attracted
to the shooting only, but they may be attracted to the way in which the core
product (shooting) is packaged (i.e., with music, fun, excitement, and
entertainment).
Another aspect of the sport product is the associated licensed merchandise. Like
offer goods such as hats, T-shirts, jackets, and other apparel as well as nonapparel
items such as watches, novelty items, memorabilia, and decorative items that
consumers perceive as extensions and representations of the teams or events.
Sponsorships can help corporations increase sales, change attitudes, heighten
awareness, and build and maintain positive relationships with consumers.
Promote the shooting :
communicating the image of the product to the selected target audiences.
Promoting shooting involves implementing a mix of activities that will best
(1) communicate the desired image of the shooting to the target audiences,
(2)educate and inform the target audiences about shooting and its benefits, and
(3) persuade the target audiences to promote the shooting.
For example,
Cricket programme has a particular time slot in every news channel like 7.30
HALLA BOL at STAR NEWS, similar kind of news programme telecast at
SAHARA SAMAY, AAJ TAK, and TEJ Etc. so similarly there should be news
shows for shooting which can persuade people.
Promotions, perhaps the most visible aspect of the marketing plan, are related to
every aspect of the 10 Ps process. For example, promotions communicate
something about the consumers, the product, the packaging and positioning, the
price, and the channels in which the shooting will be distributed. Successful use of
the various promotional Elements presented as follow:
The factors that influence the thoughts, perceptions, and actions of the
target audience
Clear promotional objectives (regarding sales, promoting awareness,
and so on)
The appropriate promotional mix tool (radio, television, newspapers,
and so on) to use given the uniqueness of the sport product or event
Other aspects of the marketing plan coordinated with the promotional
mix elements to create an integrated strategy that will achieve the
marketing goals and objectives Elements that compose a promotion
strategy (i.e., the promotional mix) include advertising, publicity,
activities and inducements, public relations (including community
relations and media relations)
HOW TO PLACE SHOOTING EFFECTIVELY:
Analyzing the place of the SHOOTING.
Place refers to the location of the shooting sport (stadium, arena), the point of
origin for distributing the product (ticket sales at the stadium, sales by a toll-free
telephone number), the geographic location of the target markets (global, national,
regional, state, communities, cities), and other channels that are important to
consider regarding how target audiences may access the product (such
As time, day, season, or month in which a shooting is going to be happened, as
well as the media distribution outlets that consumers may use). Factors related to
the physical location of the shooting can have a favorable or unfavorable effect on
the marketing plan. To ensure a favorable effect, the sport facility must be easily
accessible (highway systems, parking, walkways, ramps); have an attractive
physical appearance (well maintained and painted); have a pleasant, convenient,
and functional environment (quick and easy access to concessions, clean
restrooms, smoke-free and odor-free environment); and have safe and pleasant
surroundings (adequate public safety and security personnel, attractive
neighborhood).
placeThe comprehensive manner in which shooting is distributed to
consumers.Shooting is unique in the way it is distributed to consumers. The
production and consumption of the product occur simultaneously for spectators
attending shooting in stadia or arenas. The shooting product is also distributed to
consumers, nationally and globally, through the electronic media of television
(regular cable and pay-per-view), radio, and Internet broadcasts. Ticket distribution
is another critical aspect. The objective of a ticket distribution system is to make
consumer purchases easy, quick, and convenient.
Some approaches used by shooting organizations include using outside
companies such as Ticketmaster; ticket outlets at local banks, shopping malls, and
grocery stores; mobile van units that transport ticket personnel and operations to
various locations throughout the community;
On-site stadium and arena ticket sales with expanded hours of operation; toll-free
telephone numbers; and will-call pickup arrangements.
Place is a critical aspect of the marketing plan. Marketers may package a shooting
with exciting extensions, communicate effectively to target audiences, and offer
the product at a reasonable price, but if consumers cannot access the event (e.g.,
because of barriers related to time or location), the marketing of the event will not
be a success. Therefore, the overall objective of placing, and Thus distributing, the
sport product is to facilitate consumers ability to take part in the shooting sport
experience, in a timely and convenient manner, thereby promoting marketing
success.
Indian sports need good marketers :
It has been a roller coaster ride for Indian sports in the year 2008, after having won
so many laurels. Abhinav Bindra won the countrys first-ever individual Olympics
Games gold medal. Then Vijender Kumar and Sushil Kumars bronze medal at
Beijing also gave the country a lot of joy, as did Saina Nehwal, Jeev Milkha Singh
and Viswanathan Anands performances. And as always, there was a lot to cheer
for on the cricket front as well, as Sachin Tendulkar broke Brian Laras record of
the highest run-scorer in Test cricket history. And Indias victory over Australia is
another commendable achievement. No joy matches the joy of defeating Australia
after some recent hot and spicy events, which need no mention.
Undoubtedly, there is nothing bigger than cricket in India when it comes to sports,
but now, with some of the recent achievements of Indian sports persons; the sorry
state of affairs towards other sports in India is changing. The preferred partial
treatment that cricket was enjoying since the last few decades seems to be finally
nearing an end. The steps taken by BCCI, Indias richest sports board, is plausible,
as the BCCI has made an announcement to donate $11 million annually to the
National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), which was set up in 1998 by the
Government, to mobilize resources for sports other than cricket, which is, by far,
the most popular sport in the country. This fund will not only be used to assist
prospective medal winners in boxing, judo, swimming and archery, but also help
any other deserving sportsperson from any other discipline. This gesture, just when
the country has brought accolades in the Beijing Olympics, is a welcome move,
and will give a boost to sports which have been suffering due to lack of adequate
finances.
Till some time back, the situation was so bad that Indian shooting officials were on
the verge of pulling the team out from the Beijing Olympics before the sports
ministry and private sponsors stepped in. The BCCI has, no doubt, played the role
of a savior, for other orphan sports.
This way, the BCCI will surely help sports persons by providing the requisite
facilities, resources and platform to the potential sports talent in India. Now one
thing more that Indian sports needs is good marketers. The National Sports
Development Fund (NSDF) has found a solution to its lack of adequate funds;
now, it has enough money to bring out the allies of Dhonis and Tendulkars in
other sports. What they need is a manager like Lalit Modi, under the leadership a
personality like Sharad Pawar, to become a successful brand by associating with
big corporate houses and thereby induce television viewer ship, spectators and
sponsorship.
For instance, the moment one thinks of cricket, the first thing that comes to mind is
Pepsi and vice versa. The same is with Reebok; thus Pepsi and Reebok have
become household brand names, courtesy cricket, only because the benefits they
get by being associated with cricket are enormous. And in turn, it helps cricket too,
because they give sponsorships for ticket sales, media broadcast, websites, books,
magazines and games, and helps in promoting cricket. Undoubtedly, marketing of
cricket events is a big business in India and associating one self with cricket is the
mantra for getting the maximum market shares and brand image.
Learning from cricket, the NSDF needs to strategize and associate different sports
with such brands which are house hold names. They need to promote sports, not
just as a good career or a profession for a person, but a good business proposition
too. Its challenging, but then, sports are all about turning every challenge in to an
opportunity. What is required is good public relations and generating good will.
Firstly, using the media to its advantage, by giving special attention towards
publishing the news of Indian sports achiever in headlines and on cover pages in
news papers and magazines; not in some corner in the middle pages. Secondly,
showing games live on different upcoming sports channels by self funding, but
after proper promotion and advertisement, to raise TRPs. Thirdly, establishing
academies and clubs for people interested in that sport, with the help of public and
private partnership. Fourthly, continuous live updates on news channels of games;
the same way we have for cricket. Fifthly, to get promoters and advertisers who
endorse sports stars in their product promotion, to create awareness about sports
and to make the sports achiever a house hold name as a celebrity who features in
advertisements.
Investment in brand building of sports in the beginning helps in reaping benefits
later. It definitely requires funds in the beginning, but in long run, this will help
sports. For the future of sports, its important that people start feeling the same
pride in associating themselves with other sports; the way they feel in association
with cricket.
After all, some day, the people will get tired of watching the same cricketer
celebrities in each advertisement and Vijender Kumar is no less good looking than
Irfan Pathan. Variety is the spice of life!
Sponsors for Shooting Sport1
In a significant move which will help promote shooting in India, Italian arms
manufacturer Berretta will provide Indian shotgun shooters sponsorship and
technical support for next four years.
National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and Beretta will sign a protocol
agreement in London on July 31.
According to NRAI president Raninder Singh, under this agreement shotgun
shooters will receive sponsorship and technical support through the next Olympic
In Brazil..
In addition, Beretta will also provide hugely discounted prices on its products and
services through which the NRAI will be able to provide quality products to its
affiliated state units and those shooters that are hitherto unable to receive such
equipment, thereby majorly broad basing our sport throughout the country.
He said this protocol also includes refurbishing of defunct SAI inventory to new
and guaranteed condition, free supply of new weapons to SAI, the advent of a
world class annual competition to be known as the Beretta gold cup, and other such
promotional issues.

FUTURE OF SHOOTING IN INDIA:
Its a dream for every player to play for his/her country at the highest level. In
India, thousands and thousands of young players are working day in and day out
to fulfill this dream but only few get the chance to make it come true. But there are
some players who achieve this feat at a very young age. Here is a list of some of
the teenage sports sensations of the country who performed brilliantly in the year
2012 and promised to be the future stars.
1. Apurvi Chandela (Shooting)
This 19 year old shooter from Jaipur who won the womens 10m air rifle gold in
the Sahara 56th National shooting championship in New Delhi few days ago, also
won the gold medal in her senior international debut in Netherlands in February,
defeating some of the top players of the World. In the Sahara 56th National
shooting championships, Apurvi scored 498.7 points (395+103.7) and defeated the
nations top rifle shooters, including Avneet Sidhu,Lajja Gauswami,Anjali
Bhagwat, Tejaswini Sawant and Suma Shirur.
Apurvi is ranked fifth among Indias female air rifle shooters and currently trains
at Gagan Narangs Gun for Glory Academy in Pune. This 19 year old talented
Shooter has a bright future waiting for her and she can be one of Indias best medal
prospect in the next Olympics.
2. Mampi Das (Shooting)
Mampi Das, who is just 15 years of age, is also the youngest shooting star from
West Bengal and is considered to be Indias biggest hope in 10m air rifle women in
the near future. Mampi Das, who announced her coming of age by matching the
world record score of 400/400 in womens 10m air rifle in the National selections
trials at the Shivaji Chatrapati Sports Complex at Pune on 2nd September 2012,
was also the part of the team that won the silver medal in January 2012 at the
Asian Shooting Championship in Doha. However, Mampis effort would not be
considered as a world record since the nationals and selection trials are not taken
into account by the International Shooting Sports Federation. But nonetheless, this
girl surely has the potential to win the medal at the Olympics and World
Championships.
INDIAN SHOOTING LEAGUE
The growing popularity of shooting in the country, which began to catch eyeballs
through the stellar performance of RVS Rathore, Samaresh Jung and Abhinav
Bindra, may culminate in a professional shooting league soon.
Conceptualized by shooter-cum-entrepreneur Shimon Sharif, the Indian Shooting
League (ISL), tipped to be a mix of some of the world's best talent and set to be the
richest global event in the sport, is set to begin in New Delhi within a few months.
According to Sharif, the League, high on glamour quotient, will be specially
designed to make it more spectator friendly. "Unlike other leagues around the
world we are not following the player bidding system.
Any team with five shooters can get registered for the league. They also have the
liberty to name their own team. The league will give a good opportunity to
international gun companies and all other brands associated with shooting to field
their own teams.
Shooting academies, rifle clubs, schools, colleges and universities can also
participate. Every team can strike professional deals directly with the shooters.
The league discussed with some of the world's best shooters including London
Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang and 2010 World Championship gold
medalist and world record holder in 10m air rifle Peter Sidi of Hungary.
There is also a plan for grand opening ceremony of this league and involvement of
national as well as international celebrity.
Apart from this there should be more recognition give to the player in terms of
money and future security.
