**SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
Windows NT, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 (32 and 64bit)
**INSTALLATION
To install Ocean Data View 4 on one of the supported Windows platforms
download file "odv_<version>_w32.exe" from the ODV
website. Double-click on the file to start the installation and
follow the instructions.
**CUSTOMIZATION
ODV will automatically select fonts for painting on the graphics
canvas and for text output in the metadata and data list windows on
the right side of the ODV application window as well as on dialogs and
popup menus. You can adjust these default settings using the "View >
Settings > Fonts" option. Increase, for instance, the "Graphics Font >
Size" value, to obtain larger text and axis annotations in graphics
windows. You modify the "Text Font > Size" entry to adjust the font
size used for list windows, dialog boxes and popup menus.
Ocean Data View 4 requires a web browser for viewing the ODV4 help
document and a text viewer (or editor) for viewing various info, log
or other text files. ODV will try to locate suitable applications on
your system automatically. You can use option "View > Settings >
Program Locations" to override these default settings and specify
full pathnames of your favorite browser and text viewer manually.
**HIGH RESOLUTION MAP RESOURCES
You can download and install high resolution coastline/bathymetry
resources using the "View > Settings > Map > Resources"
option. Obviously you need Internet connection to do so.
**USAGE
To run ODV on an existing collection, do one of the following:
- double-click on the *.odv or *.var file of the collection that you
want to use,
- double-click on the "Ocean Data View 4" icon on the desktop,
- choose "Ocean Data View 4" from the Programme menu of the Windows
"Start"-Button.
If you have data in one of ODV's import formats (see ODV help for
supported formats) you can simply drag-and-drop this data file on the
"Ocean Data View 4" desktop icon. In such a case, ODV will create a
new collection in the directory of the data file, will import the data
from the file and then open the collection for exploration and
analysis.
You invoke ODV's functionality through the main menu (just below the
ODV title bar) or via popup menus that you activate by clicking the
right mouse button. Note that you get different popup menus depending
on the mouse position at the time of the click. You select stations
or samples by simply clicking on them with the left mouse button.
You open a particular data collection or netCDF file using the "File >
Open" option. Note that whenever ODV opens a particular data
collection, it initially applies the view settings active when
the collection was used last. Also note that station selection
criteria might be in effect, and that only a subset of the stations in
the current data collection may be shown in the map. Use "View >
Station Selection Criteria" to select a different station subset or
all stations in the collection, if necessary.
You may load other, previously saved views using "View > Load View",
you may manually modify the layout of station map and data plot
windows using the "Window Layout" option of the canvas popup menu,
which also allows you to load one of the predefined view templates.
You plot property/property plots of one or more stations by
double-clicking on the respective stations. You create scatter-plots,
sections and distributions on isosurfaces by assigning appropriate
window properties and variables of your choice on the X, Y and Z axis
of the window. Note that a section or isosurface variables have to be
defined for a plot to appear. You save plots in image files (gif, png,
jpg) or produce printouts using the "Save ... As" and "Print Canvas"
options.
Note that you can run multiple instances of ODV simultaneously, even
using the same collection. For further information see the ODV help
file that can be invoked via ODV's Help Topic option or by pressing
F1.
