Understanding Dark Energy and Matter

1) In the 1990s, it was thought that the expansion of the universe would slow down over time due to gravity pulling matter together, but observations in 1998 showed that the expansion is actually accelerating instead of slowing. 2) Theorists proposed explanations for this such as dark energy, which could be a property of space itself or a new type of energy fluid, or modifications to Einstein's theory of gravity. 3) Observations show that dark energy makes up 68% of the universe, dark matter 27%, and normal matter only 5%, but the nature of dark energy and dark matter remains mysterious.
