OFFICIATING SPEECH

ENGLISH LANGUAGE CARNIVAL

KULAIJAYA DISTRICT 2015

Good morning to ________________________________________ distinguished

guests, teachers, participants, ladies and gentlemen.
First of all, I would like to express my greatest pleasure and gratitude to the
organisers for inviting me to this wonderful occasion. This year, SMK Senai has been
selected as the host for the final English Language Carnival competition which was held
this morning, the choral speaking competition, as well as the closing ceremony of this
carnival. I hope that the preparation and hospitality shown by the members of this school
have made this program more enjoyable and smooth-sailing. I would also like to
congratulate and thank all accompanying teachers and participants for all your hard work
and efforts throughout this two weeks carnival.
I am happy to note that English Language Carnival is an excellent time for
participants to showcase their talents and further improve their English. Of course, every
day in school, they have chances to improve their English through reading, writing,
speaking and listening activities conducted. However, English language learning is very
rare outside school especially among students who live in rural area. Thus, these activities
like poetry recitation, public speaking, debate, spelling competition, SCRABBLE and
choral speaking can be important mediums to promote the use of English outside the
classroom contexts. In short, I hope that English Language Carnival has given more
opportunities to the students to participate with the addition of two other competitions.
As mentioned before, this carnival has the goal of increasing students chances to
use and improve their English. By being in an English language surrounding, students
will be motivated and encouraged to use English too. Besides that, all the activities
conducted also aim to improve participants confidence level in using the second

language. I wish that after this carnival, participants will continue to improve their
English with their friends back in school.
In learning English, English language media including books, newspapers, movies
and television are offered and accessible by most people. In order to become a proficient
speaker, students should take advantage of these mediums, not just to improve their
language but also to add more knowledge especially of latest issues. Ladies and
gentlemen, we have moved past the time where English was just a subject taught in
school for the examination purpose. This is no longer true for students of this generation
where English has greater demands both in school and their future workplace. Hence, it is
important to promote as much use and practice of English as possible to make competent
speakers among our students to prepare them for the challenging future.
To all the participants, it is indeed your responsibility as a student to make sure
that your English language learning goes beyond your school books and homework. It
should be a lifelong process. The opportunities are there for you, so make sure to not take
it for granted.
Before I conclude, I once again would like to congratulate and thank the
organisers for inviting me as well as ensuring this event a success. On this final note, I
would also like to congratulate all teachers and participants who have put their hearts and
soul in the competitions held.
I hereby officiate the closing of the 2015 Kulaijaya District English Language Carnival.
Thank you.
