TNRD votes in
favour of Trans Mtn

The TNRD Board of Directors at their

May 28 regular meeting voted in favour
of supporting the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project.
The vote was prompted by a motion
brought forward by Sun Peaks Mayor &
TNRD Director, Al Raine, to address
safety and environmental concerns
around the increased reliance on rail for
the transportation of petroleum products
from source to market, particularly
within the TNRD. Forecasts indicate that
rail transportation of oil within Western
Canada will increase from 200,000 tanker
cars in 2013 to 700,000 tanker cars in
2016, and similar increases can be anticipated throughout the Regional District.
Director Raine also cited the existing
pipelines robust safety record in the Regional District over the past 60 years, including no significant incidents; the
economic opportunities the project will
bring to the TNRD through local investments, property taxes, landowner compensation and regional employment during
the construction & operational phases.

Not everyone supports the project

This news comes the same day as a

new study from SFU & Living Oceans Society that says Kinder Morgan's Trans
Mountain pipeline expansion project does
not meet the Natl Energy Board's requirement of being in the public interest.
The study says the project, which
would triple Kinder Morgan's capacity to
carry oil between Alberta and Burnaby,
could come at a net cost to Canada of between $4.1 billion and $22.1 billion.
Those costs are associated, not only
with damage to the environment in the
form of oil spills and greenhouse gas
emissions, but also with building too
much pipeline capacity, it says.
This latest study follows two other reports released last week that were similarly critical of the project, one from the
City of Vancouver and one from the
Tsleil-Waututh First Nation. www.cbc.ca

Action Month

To get BCers active in preventing and

stopping the spread of harmful invasive
species in the province, the government
has officially declared the entire month
of June as Invasive Species Action Month.
Invasive species threaten BCs environment, economy and society, including
human health, but stopping invasive
species is possible if we take action.
A new website has been set up at
www.bcinvasivesmonth.ca, and the public is encouraged to post to social media
using the hashtag #ActionOnInvasivesBC. Youll find info about how to
prevent and stop the spread of invasive
species in gardens, parks & forests,
through sporting and camping activities,
in lakes, rivers and oceans, and in cities,
towns and across the province. There are
links to events and activities being held
by the Invasive Species Council of BC, regional invasive species committees, local
governments and stewardship organizations across BC.
