Fine-Arts Club Report For The Year 2014-2015

The Finearts club at IIT Guwahati held several successful events in the 2014-2015 year. In August 2014, the club's first event 'Love you Kalakaar' introduced over 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students to the club's activities. In October, the club organized a three-day fine arts festival called 'Artistica' with over 40 events including a hostel painting competition, lamp shade making workshop, stop-motion animation workshop, and charcoal drawing workshop. Over 35 students participated in each event. While the club was well-planned and organized more events than previous years, it lacked proper storage space and furniture for art supplies and works. FINE-ARTS CLUB

Report for the Year 2014-2015

The Finearts club kick-started its creative journey in August 2014 with the event
Love you Kalakaar. This event was open for both UG and PG. Almost 30-40
participants turned up with great enthusiasm. It was a successful initiation for
introducing the Fine arts club. Some of the students came forward willingly to
volunteer for the upcoming club events. This ensured that finearts club events
could be organised and managed in a better way with more volunteers.
In the month of October 2014, the fine arts club organised Artistica, the first
finearts festival in IIT Guwahati. The festival was packed with lots of fun and
artistic events. The event continued for three days and was unique as never
before in IIT Guwahati, this type of fine arts festival has been organised. During
these three days lots of enthusiastic participants came forward from both UG and
PG. Special mention goes to the married scholars who with their kids and family
participated with equal enthusiasm. Artistica consisted the following events:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Wah-Kalakaar!
Creative Lamp shades
Stop-motion Animation
Shades of Grey

Wah-Kalakaar!
This was a GC event among the hostels. One group representing each hostel
would come and paint a given canvas in a limited time. All the material was
provided by the club. A huge number of participants turned up for the event and
cheered their respective hostels. The artworks were judged by Prof. Jagadish of
Design Department, and the results were announced the next day. The artworks
are stored in the club for beautification and as an archival proof.
Creative Lampshades
Since October was the month of Diwali, so the idea of having a workshop in lamp
shade making seemed to be pretty appropriate. The workshop was conducted by
Prof. Jagadish, Dept. of Design. The number of participants was 35-40
approximately. All the materials were provided by the club. The participants were
allowed to carry their works with them if they wish. This workshop proved to be a
beautiful experience for the participants as they created beautiful lampshades by
using simple techniques and materials.

Stop-motion animation
This event was organised to introduce the basic techniques of Stop-motion
animation. This was conducted by Prof. Charu Monga, department of Design. The
participants were asked to form groups of 4-5 members as animation filmmaking is not an individuals task. They were asked to bring their own cameras
and laptops to shoot and edit the movie. Simple techniques were demonstrated
for animating the objects. Coloured clay animation was also discussed and
participants created amazing stop-motion animation with those objects.
Shades of Grey
The final event for the festival was a charcoal workshop. This event focused only
on the black and white tonal variations of drawing. The event was guided by Mr.
Ravi Prabha. Materials were provided by the club and this event witnessed a
participation of almost40-45 approximately. Live demonstration was shown and
the techniques were explained to them. Later, the participants created with their
imagination beautiful artworks. They were allowed to take their artworks or
display it in the club.
As academic session starts the students are left with very limited time to
participate in other activities. Especially, when almost each month has its fixed
events (like Alcheriinga, Tehcniche, Advaya etc.), its important to plan the
finearts club events deliberately. However, this year the club was better
equipped with proper planning and arrangements. But still theres room for lots
of improvements regarding the infrastructure of the club. Mainly the club lacks
proper furniture and storage space for the art works and material, which
sometimes results in some damage or loss. However, nothing can be perfect; we
just tried to be perfect in limitations. I wish next year the club takes the baton
with the same excitement as this year and continue its creative journey.
