Science 11.8 Lab

The document summarizes an experiment to test the characteristics of images formed by a plane mirror. Key findings include: 1) The virtual image formed by the plane mirror was identical in size and shape to the real object but inverted left-to-right. 2) Measurements of the image and object distances and angles supported the predictions that the image would be the same distance behind the mirror as the object was in front and that the image was inverted. 3) The experiment confirmed that a plane mirror forms a virtual image of the same size and shape as the object but inverted, as predicted.

Hypothesis If an object is placed in front of a plane mirror, we predict that th

e plane mirror would create a virtual image of the object that is identical in s
hape in size, however it will be inverted. This is because a plane mirror is abl
e to duplicate the object, however when you try to read a shirt in the mirror th
e letter are backwards, so it inverts the image. Also the location of the virtua
l image would be the same distance away as the real object when reflected.
Testable Question What are the characteristics of the image in a plane mirror
a) Both of the objects were same in size, shape and location. The length between
the objects was also the same in the image. The distance between the two object
s was 6.9cm, the distance from the mirror and object 1 is 3.7cm and for Object 2
it is 5.6cm.
b) Compared to the real object, the virtual image was inverted just like when yo
ur right hand in the image is on the right side which means that the objects wer
e inverted too.
c)They were both the almost the same length. The differences in the length might
be a result of a human error. The measurements were 5.6cm and 5.4cm which means
that there was 0.2cm error.
d) The two angles formed between the mirror and the object image line were 105 and
78 degrees.
e) The image created is a virtual image because there are no light rays convergi
ng to form the image, the light rays are simply reflecting off the mirror. When
the lines are connected, a trapezoid is formed.
f) The virtual image in a plane mirror is the same size, shape and location as t
he object in real life. But the image experiences a left-right reversal, where t
he right side of the object is on the right side of the image instead of the lef
t side.
g) Our prediction was correct because a plane mirror is able to create a virtual
image that is of the same size and shape. When reflected the object in the imag
e is at the same location as the object in real life. The virtual image does hor
izontally invert the object.
h) The equipment provided was adequate to allow us to answer the Testable Questi
on because the we were given a plane mirror which is what we need the most for t
his experiment. The ray box allowed us to use light to measure the angles and di
stances that the light rays created with through the imaginary objects.

i) A simple way to locate the objects in a plane mirror without using light rays
is to trace the location based on the length between the object and the mirror.
Once the image s location is found, the image must drawn according to the same si
ze and shape of the real object.

j) Draw the images (you are doing that on a sheet of paper) httpwww.physicsclass
